Title: Prince dead at 57
Post by: pilot_dude on April 21, 2016, 11:06:09 AM
While not a fan of the genre, he did have one heck of a ride doing things his way.

Ah, the artist formerly known as Prince is now known as dead.

R.I.P.

An immense talent.

Sorry for his passing.

Sad.

A great example of his talent in the last third or so of this video:

I was never ever a fan, but 57 is too young regardless of who you are.

RIP

Saddened by the loss of another great one, lost early.

I just never liked him, nor his style of music, looks, etc.  Not my thing.  However, as a former musician he was one HELL of a guitarist.  RIP.

Eric Clapton was once asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. His reply "I don't know, ask Prince".

Billy Gibbons also gave a great tribute to him today as well.

Really?  I had no idea he was held in such high esteem as a musician.

Same here.  I honestly don't recall if I ever heard any of his music or not.  I know that I never made any effort to do so.  But gone at 57?  Sheesh.  Makes me feel old.

I had no idea he was almost 10 years younger than me.

Great little music video with the Muppets:

Yes, he is a fantastic guitarist, and pianist.  He probably played several other instruments.  I just learned on Fox that both his parents were professional musicians.  His style was just not aligned with mine.  When he played straight rock on his guitar, no one could touch him.

He's a self taught prodigy. At 18 he wrote and recorded his first album in which he played all the instruments and did the vocals.

The man sold 100 million albums worldwide, quite an accomplishment.

Oh yeah, if you're a musician, as I am, you recognize enormous talent regardless of genre or "look". The guy played all of the instruments on his albums. The sidemen were just for touring.

I was not a big fan, but this is a big loss.   I think he was a pretty drug free guy, sounds like heart issues to me, he had been hospitalized a short while ago.  57 is too young to go.

No drugs, he was a Jehovah's Witness.

Interesting.  I've never played an instrument.

TMZ is reporting that he had a drug overdose 6 days ago.

I was never a big fan of his particular style of music, and thus didn't listen to him much. Anyone have a good link to a guitar solo so we can hear his chops?

Did you check out "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that I posted earlier in the thread?

Lots of talent on stage, but I think he pretty much steals the show, starting about 2/3 of the way in.

I've never understood the attraction to drugs, or alcohol for that matter.

Well alcohol is a drug, and be even more destructive than other "drugs" as it is so easily available.

Understood.  I still have never seen the attraction.  And I have seen the effects it has had on a sibling.

Great video showing another side of his talent.  For some reason I can just never get the banjo strings to bend like that  ;D

Ok, that was pretty impressive. I only remember seeing some of his videos, and thought that his gyrations were more acting than guitar playing, leading me to wonder if he was even playing it. I guess I was sorely mistaken.

He did surround himself with beautiful women, which for me was the only thing that made his videos watchable.

I bet if we were to go back in time and ask Elvis Presley, or Michael Jackson if they were drug addicts, they would say no way, but they may concede that they do take medication for xxx condition. In the case of Prince, my money is on prescription pain killers as the culprit.

I never watched his vids, nor listen to his music unless it was being played in a public place.  I didn't realize until a few years ago learned he was a very accomplished musician on many instruments, especially guitar.  I played guitar in bands for many years in my misspent youth, so I can tell the real deal.

I got laughed at by the music store guitar instructor when I took some lessons in high school. Apparently not being able to manipulate my large fingers (defensive tackle, broken fingers, blah blah) on the frets was a big source of humor to him. I told the twerp to fuck off, and thus endeth Stan's music career.

I saw the Rolling Stones in Charlotte in 2005.  I was the tax partner for the Charlotte Bobcats, and this was their first event in their new arena.  I gained a new appreciation of Keith Richards' ability to live life through chemistry.

It's pretty obvious the entire Rolling Stones signed a pact with the Devil. Nothing else explains their longevity.
