Title: Looking up an old friend's tail number - status question
Post by: Anthony on May 10, 2017, 11:33:40 AM
I lost track of an old flying buddy after I moved for work all over the country, mostly to CO, but a few other states.  Did that for almost ten years, then came back to my home state a few years ago.  I tried to look up, this old friend who must have moved also, and changed numbers, etc.  He owned a Mooney, and I looked up his tail number, and his name popped up, but it says "Status Unknown", and the plane's Registration expired in 2015.  What could that mean?

I believe it means he has not renewed the registration.

Well, it could mean a lot of things and all we can do is speculate:

He could have died,
or become incapacitated,

Or maybe he is running drugs with it and if it gets caught he want's to say it was stolen from his barn and he didn't realize it.

Or the the plane may have needed repairs greater than the value of the plane.  Perhaps a really grueling annual.

Or maybe he never updated his address with the FAA and didn't get the re-registration forms in the mail.

Or maybe his wife told him to sell it, and he said "Ok", but never actually got that far,

Or maybe he sold it on Craig's list and was naive enough to think the buyer would be honest or smart enough to register it in his name.
