Title: A Few Aviation Questions
Post by: LevelWing on January 13, 2019, 10:14:20 AM
There's a lot of talk here about how bad it's gotten over at POA and other similar sites. That said, does anybody here read any general aviation websites that have articles or other published works, outside of forums? Here is what I read, listen to, or know of:

Forums

News/Information

*PilotSpin is starred because it's overwhelmingly politically related as opposed to predominantly aviation related

There's a bunch of Facebook groups out there that I don't read.

I haven't found any podcasts that I actually enjoy. I've tried listening to Uncontrolled Airspace but they interject way too much politics into it (and it's almost always anti-Trump). I don't want to listen to an aviation podcast for politics, unless it's directly related (such as the privatization of ATC or something) and even then I'd like it to be fact based or at least discussing the pros/cons of whatever the topic is.

I’ve reduced my reading on aviation websites due to the same reasons as many. PoA has gone way downhill, as most of their postings have nothing to do with aviation. The Purple Board is much the same, very little actual aviation content.  I read Beechtalk for a while, but if you aren’t a Beech fanboy that site gets old.

With that being said, we have an aviation forum here I wouldn’t mind seeing expand.

I totally agree. Let’s do it. Even if it’s the same shit that makes peoples heads explode over at AOPA - what headset, high wing or low wing, steam gauges vs glass.  We could have interesting takes on things unlike the “experts” on POA. Ugh.

As long as we all agree tailwheel pilots are superior to all other beings on the face of the planet.

My engines is running rough.  What should I do?  :)

Pull the red knob all the way out.

See, now it isn't running rough any more.

We’ll need to find a drunk A&P to answer those questions.  ;D

Yes!  Hobbs vs tach vs watch; start/stop times; pic as safety pilot; actual vs simulated IMC; God I can’t wait for this!

I put Jet A in my Cessna 150.  Is that OK?  I got it for $.20 less a gallon.  Good deal, right?

Absolutely. In your run up push it real quickly to 2,500 RPM and keep it there for about a minute. That should help clean the plugs, and everything else in the engine.

Note for NSA snoopers:  I’m a CPA, not an A&P, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Check with your own mechanic before trying this maintenance strategy.

I’m new here, and just need you all to write my term paper for me, I’m a student at Embry Fiddle and wonder, how and why did you all become pilots and do you regret it? What are your highs and lows, ha ha.  Should I continue my education or just get out there in the industry and get hours? Someday I want to get married and will that be okay if I am a pilot?

Ha! I see you’ve spent a lot of time there.

I lost patience with these posts:

“I want to be a pilot, but I have a drug conviction on my record when I was 16.  I wasn’t even using the stuff much, I just sold some to my friends. I spent less than a year in juvenile detention. However, I can’t find an AME willing to give me a third class medical so I can begin my journey to becoming an airline pilot. It is really unfair.  I mean, has everyone been perfect their entire lives?”

An easy way to cut down on these types of posts is to create an intuitive, user friendly FAQ, separate from the forums, that allow questions like this to be answered.

But if you want more aviation related content then you have to take the good with the bad. Solid content that is new, thoughtful discussions, blog posts, etc. are good ways to help cut down on that. I don't think you'll ever get rid of all the types of posts you're talking about, though.

How many times can a group rehash the same old questions? Either the community and conversations evolve or the community dies off.

Years ago I made this post to rec.aviation.piloting:

Like many who have lurked and posted here for long, I have noticed that
certain topics come up again and again, taking quite a lot of space and
often even starting up tired old flame wars.  Below is a system I
propose to codify first-postings.  I think this will be much easier and
quicker in the long run.  Like reading TAFs.  For example, how many
times have you read a (2,3,27) or a (16,10,11)?  Anyway, maybe someone
with even less of a life than I have can figure out what to do with the
responses.

Not everyone. Henning said lots of stuff that was utterly preposterous, and some of the stuff that wasn’t preposterous was outright wrong.  That said, I never met him, but a really good CFI buddy did.  Spoke very highly of him.

As far as internet fora, the AOPA boards are heavily moderated and mostly aviation, though most of it is crashes. Then again, how much new stuff is there to discuss day to day other than crashes? Mooneyspace is mostly aviation, and invaluable if you have the good sense to fly a Mooney. Can’t count the number of really important things I’ve learned there.

Last I checked EAA had their own board, though I haven’t seen it.  Any PIREPS?

I've met and spent time with Henning twice.  One time he flew with me to have lunch. The second time was the day before he landed gear up at Fond du Lac with his 310.  He had the 310 hangared on our airport. Henning is very interesting and much different in person.  He does tend to use some colorful language.

There was more than a little scuttlebut on POA that he geared  that thing up on purpose so he could sell it to the insurance company. Never believed it, from what my pal told me he was a pretty straight up guy. And you of course know I’m more than a little colorful my own self. Hope I catch you at another Oshkosh some day.

Henning was working over in Europe at the time. He flew over to the states and spent the day cleaning his airplane. It was quite hot and he was doing it in a hangar that didn't help the situation. After a day long cleaning and polishing he was up the next morning headed to OSH. when he got in the area weather caused him to end up in a hold. When it cleared he entered the pattern and was already at pattern speed and quite worn out, as his body clock was still off. He got out of his normal rythym and never put the gear down.  Folks can make out of it what they want I suppose.

Yeah, that's what he said and I always believed him.  After spending a few days flying around at low altitude in August in your neck the woods I couldn't figure out which runway was which, I kid you not. This Northerner does very badly with that kind of heat.

I can't blame anyone for being a trifle suspicious though, since he'd been trying to sell that thing for some time.  But I really need to see some evidence before I accuse someone of fraud.

I met him a couple of times.  He took my wife up in our Cessna and gave her some tips on engine management (since she is more willing to take tips for SGOTI than from her own husband).  I thought he was extremely knowledgeable about aviation, and many other things.  I really do think he was smarter than the average POAer, even if not the genius he thought he was.  One time I spent a few nights in LZU and he arranged a free tie-down space for me, even though I didn't ask.  I respected him a lot more than a whole bunch of other POAers.

A lot of his outlandishness was just to pull people's chains and watch them go erratic.

He appeared to be a compulsive liar.  Someone even compiled a list (with links) of all the things he claimed to have done.  And it was a long list.

But he wasn't alone there when it came to lying about experience and/or background.  PoA and the Purpleboard have a few BS artist in their ranks spewing tale after tale.

Well he yanked enough chains to be the guy to close down most threads. Not from breaking the ROE, but from acting superior to every other mortal on this sphere. I found his ego and lies to be insufferable.  His anti-semitism and blaming the Jews and Rothschilds for every ill on earth told me he was an ignorant bigot at best.

I’m glad others had good experiences but I had no need to get to know him. He could have been at one of Jay Honeck’s North 40 parties, but I never met him there.

His Linked In resume seem to reflect a lot of what he claimed on POA.  The difference is that on POA he claimed a lot more.  But with 100,000 posts (before deleting most of them) he had a lot of time to post a lot.  His linked in resume doesn't give him near as much room.
