Steingar?
Steingar weighed in on a POA thread (Post 23) about masks, on February 26, that the fear surrounding COVID 19 is “horrifically overblown.”

As he is supposed to be an “expert,” I posit that even now “experts” should not have our trust.

Ah, now the "expert" has reversed:  https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/to-mask-or-not-to-mask.124591/page-9

Quote
When I first wrote this I was looking at preliminary data, and to be honest I simply didn't believe some of the things I was reading. That the virus could be transmitted by otherwise healthy people, or it could remain on surfaces for long periods.

As it turns out I was mistaken on both counts. COVID19 is simply not behaving like most viruses. It is far more easily transmitted than any virus I've seen, and is a major health threat. Thankfully it does not seem to kill the majority of healthy young people, but Americans in mass are neither young nor healthy. This virus could easily overwhelm our medical resources if left unchecked. It is a major health threat, the greatest I've seen in my lifetime. I only hope people react wisely and behave in a fashion that does not promote viral spread once government restrictions are lifted. I have no faith that they'll do any of this and expect a huge resurgence in the fall.

Gotta keep that fear mongering going............   ::)

Sorry, Steingar.  Extreme to extreme. “Novel” coronavirus means it’s new. Its newness was known from the start.  I have a lot more faith in people who say “We don’t know some things yet. Be careful anyway.”

And sad to say, that wisdom doesn’t happen often with liberals, even “scientific” ones. Emotions, disconnects and extreme dismissals and overblowings dominate. I honestly think we’re seeing this liberal disconnect on the national stage right now, with our “experts.”

I see it all the time with my liberal friends who like to hunt and shoot and own many guns. They’ll defend their liberal positions (until they leave the room when robustly challenged) and vote far left candidates into office, believing that guns are bad but the tyrants they vote into office won’t take THEIR guns!

And so on.

They’re experts (until they’re not) and the rest of us are idiots. They’re compassionate (until they’re not) and the rest of us are haters.

Unsustainable idiocy.

Steingar thought the initial reports he was hearing were hysteria.  COVID19 wasn't acting like a virus, and Occam's Razor suggested that folks were just getting it wrong.

Steingar was mistaken in this regard.  COVID19 is a very dangerous bug indeed. You can transmit it when you're asymptomatic.  Virions can sit on a surface for up to a week.  I would have never believed such a thing.  Viruses can't do this stuff.  Well, this one can.

I once said that if anyone didn't want me here all they had to do was say so.  I still say it.

You mean asymptomatic, autocorrect must have got you. Virions sitting on a surface aren’t the same thing as them being able to cause disease.

Actually, the entertainment value of this place is off the charts.  Every other post someone accuses me of being troll.  But you've devoted an entire thread to how regulatory I visit the site.  You guys should make up your minds...

That's ironic.

I wonder about the numbers, too (presuming the typo) and also presuming rate equals deaths/cases.

I have been trying to make up my mind at least about individual posts. For example, when you say something like, “If you want to reopen the economy, you care more about money than lives.” So I think, one of the following must be true:

1. You don’t grasp that ultimately lives will be lost by the economic crash, so it’s not lives vs money, it’s lives vs lives. And, if the shutdown continues it will eventually affect the food supply and if continued long enough many more lives will be lost than covid19 will kill.

2. You do grasp that but are trolling, hoping to stir up outrage.

I can’t figure out which is the case. I’ve never been one to accuse you of being a troll, but for the first time ever, I’m having trouble squaring some of the things you’re saying, unless you are trolling.

Tim

I was reactly mostly to the typo.

It's my understanding that mortality rate would be the number of deaths divided by the number of cases.  This is a number that can't be finalized until much later.  It can be estimated and bounded, but not finalized.  And of course to beat the dead horse even more, underestimate the number of cases and/or overestimate the number of fatalities and the mortality rate is overstated.
