The night before 9-11-2001 I was in PIT getting ready to depart to ITH (Ithaca, NY) We were running late and the gate agent told me we had 10 pax that were landing on another flight in a few minutes. We were the last flight out to ITH that night and I decided to wait for them. 20 minutes later we got them on board and not one of them had any checked baggage only carryons so that worked out great. Landed at ITH just after midnight and we hit the hotel. The next morning my FO called me saying turn on the TV. I asked what channel he said any channel. That brought me awake immediately. Even the home shopping channel was covering it. My flight attendants girlfriend works in the south tower. He couldn't get in touch with her for 3 days. But as luck would have it she had a dental appointment that morning and wasn't at work. We flew out on the morning of the 14th.

Active duty Marine. Embassy guard in Tokyo. We were getting ready for an inspection the next day. We started getting calls from friends. Turned on local news and watched the Towers fall. We all got called in an hour later to secure the Embassy and Ambassadors residence. We were and 12 on/12 off for the next month.

I was working from home on a project on a major computer upgrade. I had two large monitors and in the corner of each one I had had a TV news window (CNN on one monitor and FOX on the other) with the sound down. Suddenly I noticed that both channels were showing the same footage of the top of a building spewing smoke. As I turned up the sound my wife called me from her work and asked if I was watching. While we were talking I told her another plane just hit another building. She was so shook up she closed the clinic and came home. While she was on her way I heard about the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.

I was sitting at home in the den by myself on the computer probably playing Quake 2 and the TV was on. They interrupted to tell that a plane had hit one of the towers, a horrible accident I thought. I kept listening while continuing the game and then heard the reporter say a second plane just hit and I turned to look and see the immediate aftermath. At that moment I knew we were under attack and the whole world changed.

I was at work, entertaining both customers from the west coast as well as our corporate overlords from the mountain region. Once we heard of the attack, all meetings were suspended and we adjourned to the conference room that had cable TV and watched for a while.
And then both of our visitors, realizing that air travel would be suspended, started calling corporate travel to find rental cars for the long drive home.

At the time I was flying for a large regional airline. We were in class for recurrent ground training. When we went on break that morning an IP friend asked if I knew about the plane that flew into one of the towers. Found a room with a TV and of course they were replaying it. As we watched we then saw the second 767 fly into the other tower. Then we knew the first wasn’t a Cessna and wasn’t unintentional.
I think we were grounded for a few days before the airlines were allowed to start flying again. My scheduled FO was from Iran, good guy, but my wife was nervous about it. 3 day trip went fine.

I said it was probably a lost Cessna and it cracked some windows and bounced off. Turned on the news. Wow. Twenty years later and I still can't watch the destruction. Lots of shows on today about the event and aftermath. I can't watch.

The sad part is we went after the wrong people. Starting two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) that cost us lives and trillions.
And to this day we still protect the country that was behind this.

When I was watching it as it happened I noticed “debris” falling which I thought was pieces of wall or structure coming off the building. I was horrified to find out it was people jumping. I was so pissed I got completely behind invading Afghanistan. I’m still pissed to this day, even more so how Afghanistan ended up. It all makes me sick to my stomach.

That was one of the most DISGUSTING things that goddamn MOTHERFUCKER did. Kill our own pipeline costing thousands of Americans their jobs and THEN going to fucking OPEC to beg for oil.

Right now that oil is being transported by rail road. The keystone pipeline would end the need for rail transportation, and rail transportation cost more than pipeline.

I see the thread went off the rails, but...
I was at the RDU airport, waiting to fly to Newark. I remember it was a Tuesday because we would normally have flown on a Monday, but the client has something going on so we were a day late. We were delayed boarding and the gate attendants first said there had been a plane crash and they were shutting down the airport for a while. Then it became "a plane hit a building" and the flight was being cancelled. Being a good business traveller, I immediately jumped up to look for rebooking options, which were strangely non existent. At some point, they announced that all flight into the NY area were being halted and there would be no flights until tomorrow. Ok, no problem. I called my wife who picked me up and we were driving home when we heard on the radio the second plane hit and knew it wasn't an accident. I later found out that our client in Elizabeth NJ has watched it happen from the patio on the roof of their office.
A co worker was in LA. They were doing a system startup and he had gone the week before. It wasn't going well, so he called in some help from someone in Boston and insisted he fly out immediately rather than wait. The guy was upset about coming earlier, but on Tuesday morning he was in shock because he was originally booked on Flight 11.
We had other people doing a system startup in South Korea. Some of them were stuck over there for 3 months before international flights could resume.

Well to keep it off the rails (sorry, OP), I was driving all day yesterday and was so happy not to see any of the maudlin, sorrowful memorials.

It’s a bit like the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Biden can’t remember what he has forgiven and if you reminded him of it, he won’t know if he’s been told that he’s forgiven them. It’s impossible for him to know his position and direction to move at the same time.
