Title: Punished for Doing the Right Thing
Post by: Jaybird180 on February 08, 2016, 03:59:31 PM
I hope this young man's suspension is reversed and he is praised as a hero.

These dumbasses are responsible for teaching our children.   Email the nurse when the girl can't breathe?  The teacher is a loser and the administration should be fired.

My son has asthma and they administration wanted him to keep his rescue inhaler at the nurses office.   We used to give him one in his pocket so he could have it when he needed it.   He got bagged once or twice using it, but the teachers weren't losers.

He got "bagged" because he was using an inhaler?

What the heck?  I don't understand the reason - can someone/anyone explain the reason for keeping the inhaler only at the nurse's office.

The teacher told him to put it away after he was done.  He was probably around  9 or 10.   I couldn't for the life of me explain why they weren't allowed to have it in school and I suspect the girl in the OP was a victim of the same stupidity.  When they need it they need it, waiting 10 or more minutes for a nurse is ridiculous.

I suspect a dichotomy of policies. On one hand it's medication and we can't trust kids not to share with their friends. OTOH, we have to justify a need and capability for urgent care from the government paid employee.

I teach High School, and yes there are some really "interesting" policies.

However, my guess is there is quite a bit more to this than we know.  What frequently happens with this sort of thing is the school district can't comment because of privacy laws, so all we here is the somewhat(?) slanted story from one side.

Not saying who is in the right/wrong on this, I don't know, just that I have seen things that if the entire story was generally known public opinion would be way different.

I.e. I've seen kids fake this sort of thing just to get out of class, cause a disruption, etc.  Maybe this kid has a history of this sort of thing, maybe the two of them together use this frequently to get out of class?  Again, no knowledge, just pointing out there is likely a lot of missing details.

Oh, and most districts have a very strict policy about kids having any drugs on them (inhaler is a drug).  This is because of repeated incidents of kids sharing drugs, someone OD's and the district gets sued.

Stupid, yes, but thanks to lawsuits you can at least understand why the districts are put in such a difficult position.

It's reasons such as this, as well as the general lack of education being provided, I am a proponent of voucher programs.  If these schools lose enough kids due to asinine policies they may be more prone to reevaluate their positions.

A few moments of rational thought yields a multitude of better solutions than waiting for an email from a nurse.

Too bad the "leadership" of the school systems haven't demonstrated the ability to think critically.

The idea that policy trumps personal safety is the kind of idiocy that infects public schooling and public school teachers and administrators to a fault. Any public school administrator that thinks they need to punish someone, anyone, just because something happened, is an idiot.
