Florida residents also aren't allowed to use solar panels:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-09-18/florida-you-cant-use-your-own-solar-panels-crisis

That's not what the article says at all.  Not only that, but the article is misleading in a number of ways.  It implies that homeowners can't use power from their solar panels after a storm, but that's simply not the case.  They just have to have a switch that keeps power from their panels from being directed back into the grid.  Seems reasonable to me.

Not necessarily, too many people don't know to keep their yappers shut when dealing with those guys.

Reminds me of the case from last year, maybe 2 years ago, where the court said you have to actually say that you're invoking your right to remain silent.  That's just wrong.

Just out of curiosity, tell me you didn't place the current American flag on the confederate soldiers' graves.

Personally, I think it's a bunch of nothing, but seems goofy to give equal rights to confederate soldiers since they were indeed the enemy of the U.S.

But really, tearing down statues and getting upset about the rebel flag...those are people with too much time on their hands.  People in the south who enjoy seeing the rebel flag and references to Lee aren't pro-slavery, they're just having some fun and enjoy their ties to the southern states.  Yes, there's some pride to be from the south because things are different there.

And most of the people are embarrassed that the KKK and neo-nazis are embracing their old flag.

Times have changed.  I have friends in several southern states and they really don't take the ties to the south seriously.  Some have the old flag license plates, etc.  But they also have close friends and family who are black and Hispanic and want no part of any prejudice.  We all know it exists, but we're just not close to anyone who feels that way, so it seems odd that something like this can get so out of hand.

I live just a few miles from the Mizzou campus where all the cameras were last year.  The damage the protesters did to our state, city and university won't be undone for decades.  Enrollment is down in the double digits thanks to the protesters who got their fifteen minutes and disappeared.  The name has been tarnished and it was amazing how often people I've known forever emailed me asking about the danger in town.  I LIVE HERE and never saw anything - nothing, except what was on the news.  One thing I can say is that every town has idiots, racists (of every color), big mouths and wannabes.

The current situation got out of hand because of one idiot who wanted attention and thought it would be cool to mow down a crowd.  I know most of you will say he was attacked, etc, but anyone with even one functioning brain cell knows that's not what happened.  He was an idiot with too much time on his hands, not enough real worries, and found a group of morons to associate with.  To fuel the flames was the group of counter-protesters.  To be fair, another group of people with too much free time, but by and large most, but not all of them, were peaceful.

I used to say that people crying racism were out of touch and looking for attention.  And then I come here and see a lot of the crap being said and it's obvious I'm out of touch.  People like that do exist, and apparently in numbers big enough to warrant more attention.  Because it obviously is a problem.  Whodathunk, in this day and age.

And his dummy wife, who campaigned with him saying she wanted to put a stop to online bullying, especially bullying women on their appearance....now says he was justified because he was picked on and he's fighting back.

What the fuck?  Leader of the free world and he feels the need to tweet about how he perceives being investigated as a witch hunt.  It's like he's in jr. high.  He's an embarrassment to our nation on the world stage.

I read another article this morning that food stamp enrollment is down nationwide because illegals are fearing deportation.  Seems like a double bonus.

She's moderately funny occasionally.  I haven't seen anything of hers in years though.  I'm not sure why she thought anyone would find this humorous though.  With that said, I can't imagine why anyone would care.  The way some people get worked up over nothing, and then say they're entitled because "the left" was so worked up over something similar in the past.  Bah.   I think we're above that.  I think I'll go back to continuing to not pay any attention to her.

I'd like to see a 99% reduction in foreign aid.  A 98% reduction to the arts.  A 100% reduction in dept. of education.  A 75% reduction in food stamps and public housing.  And 95% reduction in SSI.

A guy can dream, can't he?

Erosion of the 4th isn't limited to Obama.  I think we can all agree it crosses party boundaries and is the worst at the local level.  The worst part is that the erosion is accelerating and that so many people either don't care or welcome it.

My opinions on the matter aren't agreeable with many people though.  I don't think one should have to assert his right to remain silent.  He should be able to simply remain silent.  I read something a couple of weeks ago about a guy getting stopped at a checkpoint, asked where he was going and he said he didn't have to answer.  The cops arrested him for not complying and this was upheld even on appeal.  Serve a warrant on the wrong house, find something illegal, and it's still a good bust?

I know it sounds like I'm in favor of being soft on criminals.  I'm not at all.  I just think those hired to protect us need to obey what should be a very strict set of rules.

We've militarized our police and given them broad powers.  I don't think it should be that way.  We had a situation here in town several years ago where a guy was suspected of selling pot.  A warrant was signed, sat on for a month, then a SWAT team hit the house in the middle of the night.  Video shows the family had 2 small non-aggressive dogs who were chased into the kitchen where one was shot, the other shot when it ran into the laundry room.  The guy's wife and 8 YO led out the door while this guys is complying with the command to lay on the floor, then kicked in the head (not hard, but still, why?)

Sure enough, they did find a joint in the raid, maybe even two, I don't recall.  But it's amazing to read the comments about how the guy brought this on himself by having marijuana.  I don't know, maybe things have always been this crazy.  I just don't remember it being like this and it seems like it's getting worse.

Spin Zone / Re: Have all the liberal/progressives left?

Oddly, I consider myself a conservative as does almost everyone who knows me personally.  Yet here, I'm an egg-sucking liberal.  I don't really care about how I'm labeled though.  What keeps me from frequenting this forum are the same things that caused the original SZ's demise.  That opposing viewpoints aren't welcomed.  There is no witty banter or humor in counterpoints.  It's very aggressive and not enjoyable.

My best friend in college and I were very much opposites.  He's very liberal and I'm somewhat conservative, yet we had a fun game we'd play without having ever said a word to each other about it.  We would frequently play devil's advocate, taking the view the other would normally have, and we'd have fun doing it.  One example I vividly recall 30 years later is when he said no one should be allowed to make over $5M/year because no one needs more than that.  I agreed and started making points in his favor.  He then took the side of why it's an asinine idea that would rob the world of  initiative or rewarding those for going above and beyond or being absurdly creative.  Not that it ever changed our beliefs, but it was an excellent fun tool to make you think.

Still, I kind of miss when products used to be just products, not coming with an albatross of a political statement dragging along.

Those weren't the good ol' days, that's today if you're most people.  I disagree with a lot of companies about a lot of things, and to be honest I really don't care about their politics.  I like a good medium roast, and Pike's Place is good and costs me $2.12 after tax.  That's about the same as most diners charge.  So I'll get a cup once every couple of weeks when it's handy.  Once I give them the money, it's theirs to do with as they wish.  I don't really care.

I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart, but dammit, they're so convenient and inexpensive, so I go there a lot too.  I disagreed with Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago, but they have some cool stuff no one else in town has.

You're always going to have the fringe who go out of their way to make a statement by boycotting everyone on their naughty list.  And I can respect that.  I don't really have the desire or the time for that though.

Spin Zone / Re: How could we split up the country?

The main problm is that the left is never happy and wont ever be happy. They just want to keep taking more and more. That needs to be fixed before the right can compromise. Otherwise the right will lose, lose, lose bit by bit.

You know that you can interchange the words left and right, back and forth all day, and this is exactly how both sides think.  That's exactly why we are where we are.

We need to weaken the Federal government so state's rights matter again.  That was the concept of the U.S. in the first place.  United States not one big Oligarchy.  Still, people can vote with their feet.  If you want to live in La La land, move to CA, OR, WA, MA, CT, RI, HI, MD, NY, VT, IL, MN, etc.  There are many ultra progressive states in which to choose.  But, stay in the metro areas, as if you wander out, you are fair game, even in the Progressive states.  :)

It sounds good at first glance, but the problem is that too many people want to control other people.
* control someone else having an abortion
* control someone else's right to own firearms
* control who others can marry
...and the list goes on.

We do need some federal oversight, but not nearly as much as what we have.

The solution isn't in the thread title, splitting up the country.  Really, it's the opposite.  There was a time opposing parties could work together through compromise, but that's no longer the case.  I suggested on the original SZ that it benefits no one when neither party will give an inch and was flamed.  Everyone else seemed to think it was great that their congressmen were holding firm in their beliefs and not yielding at all.  That's a load of crap in my opinion.  My wife and I disagree on quite a bit, yet we get along pretty well and have been married almost 30 years.  The solution is that neither of us takes a "my way or the highway" stance.  I'd like to see some maturity in this area when it comes to the executive and legislative branches.

Yes, there will be some areas that are non-negotiable, but that shouldn't be the case for every issue that arises, as it seems to have been for several years.

Please.  He's an embarrassment to our nation.  The fact that so many people are backing him is embarrassing.

As for "He speaks for us little people.", that's laughable.  He'd exploit anyone for a dime.  And crush anyone he could if they disagreed with him.
