When Kathryn came on at the start, I knew it was not going to be a good day.  Wife is upstairs watching FOX, they've been doing a lot.

Mark Levine told a story of being a young lawyer and he had a heart attack and how Rush paid for him to go to the Mayo Clinic.

God recalled his talent this morning.

My wife and I both feel we’ve lost a friend. He gave voice to a movement that almost died out. He gave voice to me.

I can’t get back to PS on Tapatalk, so I’m now on the site.

Rush was the only real alternative to the rest of the Media which was hijacked by the Far Left.  RIP Rush!

I listened to him probably starting at 8 years old, hes the one who started me down the pseudo classical liberal path.  I remember in college when one of my fellow students called him up asking something about economic policy in the gulf war and rush basically responded with the keynesian perspective. In an attempt to wrestle with why rush was going against my instincts I dove into the economic and political writings of  Locke, Smith, Hayek, Friedman, Sowell(plus a whole bunch of law writings even adopting an online moniker incorporating justice Scalia lol).  Eventually ending up in a sort of Chicago school economic  fan, neorealist foreign policy, and a social libertarian where i've remained for a good 15 years now.

While we ended up disagreeing more and more he was always entertaining to listen to. was sad to hear he was suffering from cancer, well wishes to his fam.

Unity my ass. Libs are all “Rot in hell, Rush.”

I’ve said it before, but I’ve never in all my life been so convinced of my conservative values and position on issues as I am now. Through this last year I’ve gradually been investing more in my relationships with other conservatives and it’s so refreshing. Not an echo chamber ... robust discussion of all facets of a subject without judgement. Soooo much healthier than just “we can’t talk about that.”

Broadcast radio is 100 years old and Rush Limbaugh was on the radio for 32 of those years, think about that.

I've found the same thing to be true.  I'm not looking for an echo chamber, but intelligent people who can discuss a topic rationally and reasonably.  I'm willing to be convinced my position is wrong.  They are too.  My friends are mostly conservative, but some are liberal.  All are willing to discuss without judgement.  The people I drop are those who say to me "YOU can't talk about that."  Thank you Pilot Spin for being a safe haven to have intelligent discussions.

Every now and then I drop by the Huffington Post comments on an article.  I've never seen such hate-filled people in my life.  There is no way to have any kind of discussion with those people.  Closed, little minds.

Back to topic: I remember in the early 1990s when driving across country and all I could get was AM radio out in the middle of nowhere.  I happened across one of Rush's broadcasts and it held me spellbound.  Intelligent arguments, masterfully delivered in an entertaining way.  I was delighted to find out that he was really everywhere and I could listen when I got home.  I fear that we will never see his equal again.

For years I've looked forward to noon and hearing Rush's voice. Even over the last months I would tune in hoping to hear him. Not sure what to do now.  Don't know what is going to happen.

There’s literally nothing better on the radio during this time slot, so I still listen, in part wondering what will happen with the time slot. I don’t think a substitute host will be elevated to the next Limbaugh. No one has the whole package, and it would be a mistake for the EIB to try that.

Mark Steyn is the only one I'd tune in to listen to.  He's not Rush by any stretch but he manages to amuse me and keep me entertained while being more than reasonably insightful.  I still wouldn't make a point to listen to him if there were breaking news I wanted to cut to the bone about, that was always Rush and only Rush.

An example, tonight on "The Five" Yawn Williams made a comment about how COVID ruined the economy.  I immediately thought to myself, if Rush were still with us, that would have been on his list of audio cuts tomorrow and Rush would have roasted him for such a statement.  No one on "The Five" thought to challenge him and certainly no one else in media would think to challenge that statement.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot.

I think the EIB, if it wants to continue to exist, will come up with a permanent fix instead of these rotating guest hosts playing clips of Rush. I have no idea what that permanent fix should be.  I thought Rush may have had something in mind; maybe this rotating guest thing is what he was thinking.

It’s not holding people’s interest, my wife included. Soon affiliate stations will start abandoning the EIB for this time slot, just like your local ATL station.

While I don’t believe anyone could replace Rush, ever, I feel sad thinking that a 3-hour slot will be replaced by smaller local or limited syndicated talk show hosts. At some point it will just be easiest to pull up podcasts vs listening to AM radio. My wife listens to Ben Shapiro during Rush’s time slot now.

Agree. Rush’s show was up to the minute. Listening to past clips just isn’t the same.

I can’t listen to Ben Shapiro for very long at a time. His voice drives me nuts. Don’t get me wrong I love him but something about the rapid fire speaking style...

That too but I wasn’t sure the higher tone wasn’t just my hearing aids distortion. I have a difficult time processing voices that are at high frequencies. There’s a staffer at my chiro that has an extremely high squeaky voice and I find it impossible to understand a single thing she says, and that’s with my hearing aids at full blast. One of my own daughters also has a very high pitched voice and it’s hard to listen to her talk, it’s a strain. I’m hoping newer hearing aids are better at this, mine are I think 7 years old now. I guess I could get new ones but other than this problem they work great and I’m loathe to spend several thousand dollars if it’s a problem that can’t be fixed.

They are probably expensive, but frequency shifting (or frequency lowering) hearing aids do exist.

Wow, that would probably be helpful if it works like I imagine. Hopefully it is an option you can toggle on and off. I would not want it to apply to music. My favorite singer has an excellent falsetto. No, it’s not Tiny Tim.

Although I have three siblings who now use hearing aids (there are seven of us,) I’m not personally familiar with them since my hearing is (so far) fine. I don’t know if any of them use frequency shifting hearing aids, but I know they exist and generally that feature can be turned on and off.

If yours are 7 years old, I have no problem advising you to get to a good audiologist asap.  The advances made in the past few years have been phenomenal.  I am profoundly deaf.  I have been wearing hearing aids since the late '80s.  I bought the best hearing aids available 5 years ago but they were not up to the task.  I bought a new pair 2 years ago and they have been so much better, but still not perfect.  But the bluetooth connection to my phone, TV and computer make them remarkable.  There is now a new hearing aid that fits in the ear that is better than my 3 yr olds.  I pick them up next week.  I can't wait.

Yes, they are expensive, but like the MasterCard commercial says, they are priceless.

But the most important thing is to find a really good audiologist.  Sometimes they are hard to distinguish from the hearing aid salespeople that get a 6 month certificate in audiology.  Look for a Doctor of Audiology.  If I ever move, I will fly from wherever I move to to come back to see my audiologist.

I agree with John.  I don’t wear hearing aids, but I had an issue last year to see an ENT, and they first sent me to an audiologist. She’s a Doctor of Audiology or AuD, and was extremely knowledgeable.

She said something nice like “you have pretty good hearing” and then something mean like “for a man your age.”  Lol

I also ordered custom ear plugs (like musicians wear, but smaller and clear) which are way better than anything you can buy at the sporting good store.

I got them for marshaling at OSH (The foam earplugs are inadequate for an F/A-18 or an MU-2), but they are also great for the lawn tractor. Not good enough at an indoor gun range so I doubled them up with muffs.

I currently have Starkey Livio AI, RIC (Receiver in the canal).  It has a molded ear piece and the little computer behind the ear.  My biggest problems with them are wearing them with a headset, and wearing them when working in the yard or exercising.  The sweat plays havoc with them.  (Plus, they suck with masks, but that's for another thread).

The new ones are Starkey Livio Edge, In-the-ear.  They have the same power as the ones I have now, but they have something called "edge mode".  If you are in a noisy restaurant or other challenging listening environment, you tap them once and they go into "edge mode" where they analyze the surrounding noises and adjust to bring in voices more clearly.  That's something I am hoping actually works.  I hate sitting in restaurants with a group and missing out on most of conversation.  The other ones have to be pre-programmed for different environments.

Both sets have bio sensors in them that transmit to the iphone and you can measure steps, exercise, brain activity (how much you interact verbally) and heart rate.  They act sort of like a fitbit.

I’m not sure I want my hearing aids collecting everything I do and sending it to my phone to store on the Apple cloud to be sent to the NSA but I like the restaurant noise mode. Maybe I should wait til you get yours and see how you like them.

I have the same issues with my behind the ear style and thinking I need to go to in the canal.

As far as I know, they don't send it to the cloud.  It is transmitted to the iphone through bluetooth.  There is an application on the iphone that allows you to share your data if you wish.  I don't.

edit:  I think the bio-sensors are optional though.  I probably should have forgone that part and just bought a good fitness/health tracker instead if I wanted that info.  I'm not sure about that yet.

I can certainly see the benefit of having it in the HAs. You always wear them and don’t have to fool with yet another device. If you want to track your stats. I probably should. I’m getting too weak and really need something to motivate me to exercise more.

Never heard of him, but one of the comments says this:

Quote
Article is misleading. Dan will take that time slot on Cumulus Broadcasting stations only.  Premiere Radio - the distributor of The Rush Limbaugh Show - has not yet named Rush’s permanent replacement. Cumulus represents less than half of the Rush affiliates. They’ve decided not to wait on Premiere’s replacement, and hired their own replacement for their stations to fill that time slot. Congratulations Dan.
