Title: 2024 New Years Resolutions Anyone?
Post by: Number7 on December 31, 2023, 10:09:42 PM
Can’t sleep.
Chest and head driving me crazy.
New year arrived .
Wondering about everyone’s resolutions.
Mine is easy.

I’m hoping to live thru 2024.

Take care man! And happy new year!

If I said I was going to do something I'd feel obliged to do it. So I avoid resolutions.

Ooooh.  That's a dangerous resolution seeing as how most people give up on their resolutions before January is out.

No wonder you aren't a politician.

My resolution is to drink less.  That way, even if I fail, I will still be happy about it.

I didn’t think of it as a NY resolution but I have sworn to cut out all carbs and lose the weight I gained over the holidays.  People give us carbs as gifts.  You can’t expect everybody to remember you’re eating keto.  And it’s not like I’m not going to eat the stuff.  That would be rude and unappreciative.

I love eating keto. I feel so much better when I do. I can't do it hardcore like I used to. A couple of the meds I'm on don't do well with a strict no/extremely low carb diet. One I use for my nerve issues is used off label for weight loss, and going keto with it can screw up my kidneys. Before I knew that I lost 25 pounds my first month on straight keto. It was almost scary. I am going to try to not eat excessive carbs and sugars, but this time of the year is terrible for my sweet tooth. I have 88 days until our spring break cruise, so I'm going for a 10 pound goal. Should be easy to get.

“Sweet tooth” yeah, that’s a nice way of saying addiction.  I am to carbs what a heroin addict is to heroin. I get a huge dopamine hit, then crash and feel like shit.  I get triggered seeing pictures of birthday or wedding cakes. If I get too close to the bakery section in the store, I’m drawn in like a magnet and if my husband isn’t around I might buy a cupcake, eat it in the parking lot, and throw out the evidence before I get home.

I too feel so much better on keto but it’s like how a heroin addict’s life gets so much better when he’s clean.  The damn stuff is always calling you back.  I’ve been like this since I was a little kid but could get away with it when young. Stayed slim and no imminent diabetes but not so now.

I had a celebration week myself, Egg Nog ice cream, pumpkin pies, popcorn at the theater twice during the week, cream horns and other assorted things. This morning's weigh in has me down a half pound.

You ate all that and lost weight?  Did you control for all variables?  Same clothes, or lack thereof, same time of day, best after emptying bowels and bladder and before consuming any food for the day.  Also maintain the same caffeine consumption every day and weigh at the same amount of time after consuming it to control for the diuretic effects (water retention or lack thereof).

Weigh in is always Monday morning sans clothes except under wear.  Wife gained the half pound I lost.

I just weighed myself. Gained about 5 pounds in the month of December.  It’ll take 6 months to lose it again. Why does it work like that?

I can usually lose it quicker than that assuming I crack down on the carbs and eat less overall.

I can stop the carbs and still have trouble losing it but it’s probably because I also need to cut back on the protein and fat a little, total calories matters.  I tend not to pay attention to calories, just carbs.

My wife pays attention to only calories and not carbs.  She can't let go of bread, biscuits, etc.

Pretty much the only carbs I get now is beer and the occasional snack when I go off the reservation.  No bread, pasta, etc.  Haven't had a sandwich in over 2 1/2 years.  I struggle to get enough protein, so I eat a lot of egg whites and drink a protein supplement. It helps living alone as I don't keep anything "bad" in the house.  My ex-wife used to demand we keep certain things here.  Fuck that.

Actually, I am very comfortable at my current height/weight of 6', 150 lbs., and my doctor thinks it's ok also.

Yeah those “easy” ones are the devil. I’m not going for any harder any time soon. But I’m getting a lot better at it.  Just can’t figure out how they are scoring.  Is higher better or lower better?  What do they take points off for?  Do they time it?  I can’t find an explanation on the site and I’m not going to register and create an account.

I created an account and still don't understand scoring, etc.  I've groups of cells turn red or purple and figured that meant I screwed up.  I haven't figured out a strategy to use yet.  Anything above easy starts off with no numbers given.

I wanted to keep track of which ones I’d done so I go to archive and started with Jan 1, 2023, and I’m on mid March now so that’s like 70 I’ve done and all easy, I am nowhere near trying medium yet.

With easy, if you have a 9 or a 1 those are good ones to start with.  I do it with and without using the create pencil mark feature.  Sometimes that helps but other times it’s easier to write them in myself one by one, like all the 9 possibilities then all the 1 possibilities then go to 8 and 2 and so on.

I can’t even figure out if high score is good or low score?  I did one real fast with almost no need to use the undo button and scored like 240.  Most of the time I’m scoring between 300 and 350 and I usually use the undo button a lot and even have to completely reset and start over. So I thought higher was better but now I think maybe lower is better.

Where are these "greater than sudoku puzzles" you are talking about?
I found one site that seemed to be right but it said they currently couldn't run on my browser.  But I could'nt get it to run on two other browsers either.

I think you’re right and I absolutely hate that because my fat fingers will sometimes hit the wrong number and I have to undo or erase. I shouldn’t be penalized for that because I knew the right number! But are you saying if you use the show pencil marks button they take off points?

Anyway I woke up this morning and suddenly I can solve them real fast and easy. It’s like something clicked overnight while I was sleeping.  So I tried a medium one, and no joy.

All I know is that, with a fresh puzzle and 0 score, clicking the Create Pencil Mark button results in a score of -100.  and it will continue to deduct 100 points each time the Create Pencil Mark button is used.  That was a rather big clue that lower scores are "bad"

Oh, it is not lost on me that my mother did Sudoku all the time.  I can’t escape the genetic destiny to turn into my mother.

I used to visit mom and look for aluminum foil in the drawer and find a used piece she was saving to reuse, and I was horrified.  Guess what I do now?  Yes, reuse aluminum foil.  Because Bidenflation.  But also because I cannot stop myself from turning into my mother, honestly I can’t force myself to throw that used-once piece of aluminum foil away.  And I’m doing sudoku.  Just kill me now.

Don’t get me started on the ads.  I keep accidentally hitting an ad while aiming for a number (I’ve got an essential tremor) and the ad opens up.  Sometimes I can’t get the puzzle back and have to start all over again.

I finished a couple of mediums then tried a “hard”.  That was mind blowing.  Took me 2 1/2 days but finally finished the first hard one. At first I thought it was impossible unless you just brute force ran a bunch of assumptions until you hit it right but that’s not the case. You can solve it using only logic.

You created an account, does it save a puzzle you are working on?  I was doing a hard one today and went away for a while and it was wiped clean.  I redid it, got partway done and then I walked away for 5 minutes came back and it was all reset again.  Too much work!  The one I finished that took over 2 days never went away.  It’s just getting scrubbed out of the cache or something.  I’m not gonna do any more hard ones til I get that fixed.

Yes, you can save a puzzle for a month I believe.  Geez, I still haven't solved the first easy one.  I must be stupid.  When squares turn red, I guess that mean you have something wrong.

Yes, either the number violates the greater than less than rule, or there is already that number in the same row or column or box.  It doesn’t necessarily mean the number you just put is wrong, could be the other one is wrong.

It doesn’t tell you whether a number in a location is right or wrong, just if you violate those two rules.  That’s one thing I don’t like about this site.  There is no “show me the mistakes” feature where it will tell you if a number is simply in the wrong box.  Because you can’t check for correctness along the way, you can proceed down the wrong path all the way til almost the end, when the final couple of numbers don’t fit.  Then you have to start all over.

Do you get a lot of spam from them because you gave them an email?

Oftentimes you don't get any spam from a site that you provide your email to.

However they might sell your email to others and you have no idea why you are suddenly getting a ton of emails about a bunch of other unrelated products.  I think that's why I keep getting emails about single chicks from Romania that want me.

Or… single chicks in Romania actually want you.

I wouldn't have been (too) offended if you had put that in green.
Heck, I'm older than Anthony.

I keep doing the hard ones, driving myself crazy. It takes forever. Very frustrating. Why do I do this to myself?

I am completely stuck on this one.  Since yesterday, can't see what to do next.

Whoops I made a mistake. I left the 3 and 4 note out of the indicated block.

That helps.

Edit:  Something about posting it here and working on the desktop and maybe coffee made me find mistakes in the bottom right box and now I've got all the 8's.

Can't believe I spent a day and a half not seeing that.   >:(

Edit again:  Solved it.  I have to quit this.  It's not like I don't have a lot of other stuff I'm supposed to be doing. UGH.
NEW  YEARS RESOLUTION:  Stop torturing yourself with puzzles.

Good for you. I enjoy it as a respite for a bit and keeps me using what little brain power I have.

Allow me to brag that of the 10 pounds I gained over the holidays, I've already lost 5 of them.

Ah I get it.  Like they say inflation is “down” but by that they mean it is still increasing but less rapidly than it was before?  That they refuse to point out that it means prices are still rising, and compounded over the past increases to boot.

You mean how the phrase “good for you” can have a completely different meaning depending on the tone of voice in which it’s delivered?

You're getting better!  I finally got to where I can solve a hard one in two or three hours. Once in a while, then I'll hit one that takes me two days again.

The really frustrating thing is when I screw it all up and end up resetting it and starting all over again, then successfully solving it but having no idea what I did to screw it up.

I've reset some and it never really seems to help.  >:(

Right, it’s just like doing a whole new one, because it’s not like you remember what steps you took the first time, and hence what you did to mess up. You have to just methodically attack it bit by bit, all over again, and try not to f*ck up each individual block.
