The only part I disagreed with is your assertion that in WWII we were able to "get in and get out in short order".

True, we went in and won the war in relatively short order.  But to the best of my recollection, we maintained a military presence in the countries we defeated for decades.

Point of fact, we are still there.

I used to be in your camp, but the "citizen politician" has been usurped by the "career politician" so much so that challengers to incumbents have very little chance of succeeding, not because of ideas, but because of power and influence.

Joni Ernst in Iowa would disagree. Mia Love in Utah.  And, quite a few others.  Sure, it is hard, but it is possible.

There have been many attempts to silence Limbaugh, including proposed laws, proposals to reinstitute the (unconstitutional) "Fairness Doctrine" and boycotts.

Additionally, most all of the attempts at "campaign finance reform" are intended to shut people up.
