Title: Just reported a Drone operator near my airport to the FAA
Post by: InTheSoup on January 25, 2016, 11:59:49 PM
I was checking out youtube and I find a company offering aerial photography and video with their drones and see almost every business client they have done work for was within 5 miles of my home airport. Hell, one house they filmed was right on the downwind leg of the runway, another business they filmed was right off the end of the runway. I pondered if I should be that guy, then looked on the FAA site to see if they had the 333 exemption which they do not, so I figured this guy obviously doesnt want to play by the rules.

What do you hope to accomplish by "turning him in"?

At first I had the same question. But on further thought I realized that one reason we have so many rules is that we don't enforce the ones we have. So we create new ones. If people would follow the existing rules, maybe we could reduce the need for more rules and more government to enforce them.

If they dont intent to enforce the rules, then why make them. I would hope they would either shut his ass down or force him to follow the rules. I wonder if anything will even happen. I bet there are lots of little companies getting away with this. I just dont want to hit a drone while flying my airplane. These people need to realize the reality of what they are doing.

What do you suppose the odds are that you will "hit" a drone while in flight?  Of all the things in life to worry about, this would not make my list, and I rarely feel compelled to "turn someone in".  Do you turn in people that put trash in the recycling containers, jaywalkers or those that exceed the speed limit as well?  Did you even contemplate calling the person and let him know of his/her "crime"?

It is quite possible that the operator does not know or understand the dangers of what he's doing.  You could send a CERTIFIED letter to him as a warning that if he does not immediately CEASE AND DESIST (or get the exemption) then you will turn him in and use the notice as proof of a willful infraction.
