Clinton. Get used to it. If this is the best the GOP can do, then it's Clinton again...

I think Hillary is toast, and unelectable.  Cruz is starting to surge, and I believe will get the nomination.

I know, it is amazing when I hear people, (mostly women) gush about Hillary.  They say things like, "she is so smart", and "such and accomplished WOMAN."  Yeah, she's a woman that lies, cheats, steals, and made HORRIBLE policy, yet the media adores her.

She's like "The Thing" in John Carpenter's version of the movie.  Just when you think she's dead, she jumps up, and morphs into something else, more horrible than the last creature.  Maybe Kurt Russell will ultimately vanquish her.  We can only hope.

I agree. He will be THE most conservative candidate to get the nomination since Reagan.  Which also makes him the biggest target in modern electoral history.

They left will try to destroy him. The GOP establishment will try to prevent him from getting to the finish line at the convention.

He will win the general if the conservatives (Tea Party, Constitutionalists, and even some Libertarians) force those detractors on the right into line. The GOP establishments' grave stone is being carved as we speak. And that's a very good thing.

Paul Ryan established himself as John Boehner's evil twin with the trillion dollar pork barrel bill he is so proud of, and instead of moving the ball ahead for one of the progressive GOP losers, the party just pushed Cruz further to the front.
With Marco Rubio cleverly refusing to vote on the budget deal, he made himself a target for the conservative base, and became in-electable.
Jeb made an ass of himself in the last debate, and is finished.
Kasich is so toasty you could serve him at the Waffle House.
Christy hangs tough by repeating conservative words without a great deal of history to back him up. He seems to think being present when things happened on 9/11 is the same thing as having done something.
Trump will drop like a rock, and Carson is already dropping like one.

Kenny!  Welcome old friend!  I wanted to thank you for packing that spiral bound instrument book with cardboard on both sides. That prevented the mail nazis from bending it to fit in the mail box.

Fellow Pilot Spin members:  you should buy your pilot supplies from Austin Flight Check. Ken has a great aviation supply company, and has prompt service. I endorse this business.

Now back to the topic:  I agree on Ted Cruz. Anyone else will be a lesser conservative. That especially includes Trump.

Now if Only Bernie would run as an Independent!

The Austin liberals really got their panties in a wad when that was put on a local TV station FB page.  They called him everything but a child of God and talked about how badly he was teaching his children.

I simply responded, "At least his girls are learning the difference between the truth and a lie and they'll learn to respect the Constitution and its limits."

We won't survive a Clinton presidency.

We won't survive a Cruz or Trump presidency either. One person cannot turn around the course we have evolved into. Trump, Clinton, Cruz... hell, anybody that has thrown their hat in the ring so far couldn't inspire a cat to drink milk. They are all the usual politicians with blah, blah, blah speeches, with the exception of Trump who gives out drunken bar speeches that are less inspirational, or insightful, but rather polarizing and enraging to many.

More and more I'm convinced that Trump is just a ringer to get his old buddies the Clintons back in the White House.

If we have a president that protects and defends the Constitution (you know, that oath thingie), we may be OK. The only one capable of that is Cruz.

Trump and Hillary have stated that they will do things on their own, without Congress. There is no way that Trump will give up power to Congress if he feels he can do it himself. Hillary has out and out said she will do many things by executive order.

I agree  with you about Trump being a ringer, though I look at him more like a Trojan Horse.

To be fair, Anthony, Trump makes me nervous. You know my conservative bona fides by now. I hear Trump saying things that I like to hear as a conservative, but I fear it is an entertainer's facade. His background as a New York liberal, his support of eminent domain for private development, and some of his other inclinations make me concerned that he will side with Reid and Pelosi-types in a New York minute if it benefits him politically or personally.

Stan, we are on the same page as usual.  I'd rather see Cruz, or even Bush.  I know he's got liberal tendencies.  He was for the Assault Weapons Ban, and other anti 2A stuff.  Now he says he is very pro 2A.  Well which is it?  That scares me.

His popularity just illustrates the level of frustration there is amongst conservatives, not actual support for the man IMO. I think the same thing is happening on the left with Bernie Sanders. They are anti heroes, outsiders that are supposed to represent core values and not politics as usual. I don't think either one will go the distance. Fantasies of political revolutions will subside and practicality will prevail in the end.

I really don't like Trump.  I don't like his style, his personality, nor his politics, but there is no doubt he has been saying some things that need to be said and he seems to have no fear.  I would vastly prefer Cruz, or Rubio...or almost anyone else.

Having said that, I would vote for him in a heartbeat no questions asked against Hillary or anyone else those idiot Dems choose to put up.

God, let's hope not!! We are totally screwed either way. I seriously believe that in the case of this face off, Hillary will win. Trump is loathsome and untrusted by every single person on the left. They will turn out in droves to defeat him no matter who is the Dem candidate. Folks on the right are divided on him. Historically, when the conservatives are faced with two bad choices, they stay home, or vote Libertarian or some such.

On the Hillary side, we will get another 4 years of the same we have had resulting in greater debt, stagnant economy, divided populous... except a focus on diminishing, or eliminating the 2nd Amendment.

On the Trump side we'll get a totally dysfunctional government and a high likelihood we will get into a serious war.

One looks like the prequel to 1984 and the other looks like the prequel to The Day After.

As far as his speech patterns, mannerisms and mocking tone, might as well go full Godwin:

Watching the those behind him laughing, I can't help but wonder who was still laughing a few short years later.

If it was ever Hillary vs. Trump, I'd stay home on Election Day, as I did in 2008.

My "stay home on Election Day" was figurative, not literal - but certainly misleading.

I'm did vote in 2008, just not for President. I would also vote in 2016, but could not in good faith "pull the lever" for either Trump or Clinton.

That's unfortunate.  I find it difficult to envision how McCain could have been a worse choice than Obama.

Alternative histories are virtually impossible to predict. It's easy to project how much better things could have been. I would love to be able to run a simulation to see where the Middle East, and the number of Americans killed and wounded in action in two or more continuing wars, and the cost of gas, and the stock market, and social unrest , and civil liberties, and terrorism in general would each have been under McCain. It's all a case of, "Be careful what you wish for" combined with "unintended consequences".

Yet you effectively helped Obama win.  Just like you may effectively help Hillary win.

"Forced choices" are, and always have been, problematic -  and I appreciate your stance. I understand figuratively holding one's nose and pulling the lever for the "lesser of two evils". That's probably the correct pragmatic thing to do. Or, one can follow Rush...

I don't think our society would have been as divided under McCain or Romney.  This culture of identity politics which promotes our differences, instead of our vast similarities is very destructive.  This is not what America was supposed to be.  We should all strive to become American, and believe in Truth, Justice, and The American Way.  Yes, we are special, and not because we are better as individuals, but the concept of our country, and what it represents is exceptional, and unique.

There is no question that your first statement is accurate. Sure, the race baiters, class warrior progressives, and America-hating liberals would be out of their minds with disruptive rage at a President McCain or Romney.  But when the President holds the ultimate Bully Pulpit, he can and should influence the mood of the country to one that is a prideful pro-American, "we're-all-in-this-together" mindset.

It's been done before. After four years of slings and arrows thrown at Ronald Reagan, he won 49 states - FORTY NINE STATES - in his second term, the term when unpopular incumbents (according to the pundits at the time) can be beaten. He would have won 50 but Mondale somehow succeeded in winning his own state of Minnesota.

I don't know about you, but I felt a lot of national pride during Reagan's two terms. So much so that when I tried to get into the USAF in 1982 as a pilot, they refused to give me a waiver for being 1/4" too tall sitting height. The pilot ranks were full, and this was just a mere decade out from Vietnam.

It will only matter if the candidate will not be bought or intimidated once in office.  The Dems figured out after losing the last 2 congressional elections that they could retain power with a very key/small list (Roberts, Bohner, McConnel and Ryan).

How are these key players converted and how can we stop it from happening?

I don't think Biden winning is irrational at all. (I do think it would be irrational to vote for him, but I have thought similar things in the past two elections).

If there is more evidence against Hillary, I can fully conceive of a brokered Democrat convention where Biden is drafted.
Dems don't really want to nominate Hillary or Sanders.  And Biden has already expressed second thoughts about not running.

And if Cruz or Trump is nominated, I think they will be hard pressed to get a large majority of R votes, much less very many Independents or hardly any Dems.

I think Uncle Joe is a very scary, but possible winner.
