Co pilot falls out of plane without a parachute

Rush:
He “landed” about six miles from our old house.  There was a gear problem and the speculation is he opened the back ramp trying to inspect the assembly and slipped out. The pilot went on to land without right gear at RDU.

It wasn't necessary to go to the back of the airplane to try inspect the damage. On the Live ATC recording the runway inspection unit can be heard saying they had found the wheel assembly and would take it to Raleigh.

Too bad but dumb move. Shit happens unfortunately.   Sad and yes needless.

Rush:
It would have made no difference, am I right?  They already knew they had a problem with the right wheel.  I’m not familiar with that plane but assume in any plane with a gear problem, you land as slow as possible, keep the nose up, and in this case try to keep the right side up and weight on the left for as long as you can?  But ultimately it’s going to come down on the right side and there’s nothing you can do about it but try to land with as little kinetic energy as possible. What would have been gained by visually inspecting that gear, if they already knew the wheel was gone?  If they didn’t, but suspected a problem, they could have done a fly by of the RDU tower.
