Title: Trump takes phone call from Taiwan's president - Washington aghast
Post by: Jim Logajan on December 02, 2016, 10:17:35 PM
Diplomatic fictions are not to be trifled with, though easy to make fun of.

China's foreign minister, so far, seems to be less aghast than those who prognosticate on China's reaction:

"Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the call between Taiwan's president and Trump was "just a small trick by Taiwan'' that he believed would not change US policy toward China, according to Hong Kong's Phoenix TV.

"The one-China policy is the cornerstone of the healthy development of China-US relations and we hope this political foundation will not be interfered with or damaged,'' Wang was quoted as saying."

Trump noted the shared diplomatic fiction in one his tweets:

"Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call."

Yet nary a murmur when a sitting president collaborates with and pays off  Ayatollahs sworn to destroy us.

Expected response from China.  Nothing out of the ordinary, except the media will use anything to discredit Trump.  For me if China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, etc don't like it then it was the RIGHT THING TO DO.

So my first reaction to this was that Trump isn't a politician and he didn't really care.  But what I'm hearing today is that he knew exactly what the status quo was before he accepted the call.

So now I actually think it's rather brilliant.  At some future point, China will want to insist on Trump clarifying his position with regards to Taiwan.  Trump may or may not do it, but you can bet that if he does, he will require some kind of concession from China in order to do it.  Essentially, he has put a bargaining chip into his pocket and he gets to play it.  All the US has to do to execute our side of the bargaining chip is to keep doing what we already do.

Look for this pattern.  He did the same thing with the Global Warming treaty a week or two ago.  He says we will pull back.  If nobody does anything about it, we will.  But if someone wants to give us a reason not to, say better trade terms, then ok...maybe we'll keep on doing what the US doing anyway.  But they'd better be some pretty awesome trade terms if we're going to accept limits from the international community.

I would bet "build the wall and make Mexico pay for it" was the same thing.  It's on the table if someone wants to make a bargain for him not to do it.

I have been hearing on PBS, MSNBC and other outlets today that Trump initiated the call.  My understanding was that he accepted the call, but it is easier to criticize him if he is portrayed as having been the one that made the call.  And of course, liberals believe these "fake" news sites.

I wonder which scenario is the true one?

Doesn't matter, the Chicoms don't dictate who a president speaks with, fuck them.

For once, and just barely, our Representative, Constitutional Republic WORKED.  I often hear politicians who are mostly LAWYERS, and should know better, call our country a DEMOCRACY.  It is NOT a Democracy.  The media, teachers, college professors, and government bureaucrats also call our country a DEMOCRACY.  They are very, very wrong.  People need to be reminded of our system of governing, and what the Constitution really means in addition to the philosophy of strong states, and a WEAK FEDERAL GOVERNMENT who works for the states.

Is it worthwhile to point out that the president who started the policy toward Taiwan was Jimmy Carter?

Personally, who cares if the President-elect calls Taiwan or vice versa. Don't see the big hubbub at all.
