Surely there must be a tipping point. A gaggle of articles today on Powerline about Dem infighting and the scurry toward the left.

Come on, GOP! Exploit these weaknesses!

With the exception of Trump the only thing you can count on the Republicans doing is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
They have the political equivalent of battered-wife-syndrome and just want the swamp to love them.
A pox on all their houses.
Looking at the level of nearly unopposed judicial activism since Trump's inauguration and the changing demographics of the country it really is all over but for the crying - she'll limp along for a few more years but the America we grew up in has been gone for some time unfortunately.

Except now there are more semi automatic "Sporting" rifles, and pistols in the hands of private citizens than ever before.

And more acquired outside the law than ever before.

Really. You have evidence of that?

Outside the law or around the law? They are two different things. I know anecdotally that you can buy an unmachined lower, machine it out yourself which is a simple process, and have your own serial number inscribed and it will be perfectly legal as long as you don't sell it to somebody else. Of course if you did it would be outside the law. I don't know how much this might be going on but it demonstrates the futility of the anti-gunners to try to control how many exist in the hands of private citizens.

Do you mean so called "Ghost Guns" where 80% lowers get LEGALLY finished by end users, and become a legally untraceable firearm? We allow private sales of long arms only, in my state (rifles and shotguns) so if you are legally able to own a firearm you can transfer it with no FFL, nor paperwork involved to another person legally able to own a firearm. Result is same-same.
