Title: Voter Fraud?
Post by: jb1842 on October 23, 2018, 01:41:26 AM
So is this voter fraud? Friend from high school lives/works in NYC for over a decade now. Posts on social media with her absentee ballot from Ohio using her parents address. Don't you have to be a resident of the state you vote in?

Yes.

Ohio requires you to be a resident.

Quote
Under Ohio law, your residence is (1) the location that you consider to be a permanent, not a temporary, residence and (2) the place where your habitation is fixed and where, whenever you are absent, you intend to return.

It furthermore explains:
Quote
Ohio is not considered your voting residence when:

You have moved to another state and vote in that state;
You have moved to another state and intend to make that state your residence;
You moved to another state and continuously reside outside of Ohio for a period of 4 years or more.

State of residency is a nebulous thing. Worse, each state has different requirements, and the feds have a different set of requirements. In New England area it gets even worse. Plenty of folk live full time in NJ, but work in NY. Or live in CT but work in NJ, etc. I realize that OH isn't one of the colonies, and that between it and NY is the big state of PA, but it is possible that she is still a resident of OH for legal reasons, but spends most of her time in NY.

Although I maintain several abodes in different states, my 'residence' is where I'm financially best off for income tax, and personal utility. I could easily switch to another of the abodes, but stay out of that state for weeks at a time. However, most states require one to declare residency when they take up 'permanent living accommodation' or similar wording. The definition of permanent living accommodation is also up for determination. Usually it's a property tax, or land lease and a water bill(unless on a well), or utility bill, etc.

What with your incredible expertise with old lawnmowers, and planes,  and having abodes in several states ... and some of the posts about your attitude toward flirting and picking up women, even married ones, you are beginning the ascent to Henning-like status here on Pilot Spin!

I'm -- sorry? Not sure where you get the idea I'm a fan of picking up married women. I might have flirted with a married women before, but not that she didn't start it. I don't recall ever intentionally picking up a married woman.

Or that I have any kind of special skills at mowers/planes. I'm handy with tools, and do work on planes, but nothing anyone else who doesn't know a wrench from a screwdriver. I've restored old boats and I'm working on a 1959 Allis Chalmers road grader too, I hope that's not a problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k69PUfHdy8o (not mine, but similar)

As for the voter fraud angle, I had to check on this recently as I bought a homestead in another state which might have been better suited for official residency. As an aside, I got to learning about the issue with residency in the NE area, and found it's a rather tangled web, so I mentioned that while it may be voter fraud, there are situations where it could be entirely legal.
