I have an acquaintance who is a nice guy, but rather liberal. He has two daughters similar age to 2 of my kids. Both in mid-20s. My kids moved out at 16 and 17. Both are gainfully employed,  and college grads. Both make respectable incomes. When I go visit him, he asks me about my kids, and I try do downplay the success. His two girls still live at home. Show no indication of moving out. One daughter got married, and then hubby promptly moved into house with her. Neither go to college. Neither make much money(one is a sales girl PT at The Gap). Neither show any indication of going anywhere, or being independent.

I feel so sorry for him. Nice guy, but as a parent what a schmuck. It's a story played out all over the left and right coasts.

One of my pals has his grown daughter living with him, won't go to college, won't get married (doesn't like boys).  Ig.  Another's college graduate son still lives with either him or his ex.  Has plans to move out, maybe.  I don't recall folks doing this when I was that age, but there were lots of factory jobs to be had back then.  Sign of the times?

I am really proud of my students.  They are getting degrees in STEM fields, and they will not want for very gainful employment.

one of my close friends has three children.

The 28 year old works at the YMCA and recently got married and moved out. Now he works full time at the YMCA and just - almost - scrapes by with help from mom and dad.

The 25 year old lives with three girls in an apartment the parent pay for, works at Starbucks for tips and a minimal wage and goes around in a pack because...

wait for it...

They are afraid of men. The say that they don't feel safe in the presence of males.

Their 22 year old daughter is undergoing a sex change operation at the expense of the taxpayers of New York State, lives at home, keeps quitting part time jobs and part time college ... just because... and thinks that she is entitled to the tens of thousands of dollars in money that belonged other people, until the state stole it to pay a progressive social worker to convince her that all her trouble will vanish once her vagina becomes a penis.

We have grown children. Every single one is a college graduate. Left home while in college and paid their own way in life.

We helped pay the vast bulk of the college cost because that was OUR obligation and free choice.

My friend asked me point blank why our kids are so uniquely different from each other.

I told him while he and his wife made a second career out of catering to and protecting their children from real life, ours learned to earn everything from their grades to their income.

It really isn't that hard, unless you are weak and lazy.

My father was very strict and had many rules, I couldn't wait to GTFO and start living life on my own.

My father paid for my education, and when I graduated, I asked him how/when I was to start paying him back. He said you don't pay me, you do it for your children. And if you don't, I'll haunt you from the grave.

And with that and a handshake, it was done. I know what I have to do.

True words, there.

My father sent my three sisters to community college. It was truly affordable. IIRC the tuition cost was around $17 an hour and rose to $23 an hour by the time my younger sister graduated.

He would have sent my brother and me but we couldn’t wait to enlist and take advantage of the GI Bill. Both of us graduated while still in the service and sent ourselves thru graduate school, also on the GI Bill, which offset the brutally low pay we got.

It was a good trade. Low pay, irregular lifestyle, good education when a college degree still meant something.

Heh, you guys were lucky. I started working at 13 until I joined up at 17. GI Bill and my job paid for college. Motivated? Oh - hell - yes I was motivated.

Now that this douche bag has been splashed all over national media, and he's gone to court and whined like a 4YO who didn't get a candy - what idiot out there is going to hire him?

It's the most self-fulfilling of all prophesies. Can you imagine his first job interview; "Uh - well I've been living in my parents house, in my bedroom since I was - well, 2. No, I don't have any college education. No, I don't have any skills, except for World Of Warcraft. No, I can't lift 55Lbs." heheheeee

My father died when I was still in grade school, and no financial help available from my mother who was working hard just to feed and keep a roof over seven kids.  So I had to pay for college by working summers, getting student loans, and got awarded some Pell grants (based on need, not on my scholastic ability, alas.) Also helped the budget immensely by living at home while in college. I remember well the razer thin budgeting I operated on during those years and several years after graduating when I was finally out and about.

Thinking back on it, it now feels strange to be prepping for retirement and planning where to move to next. Wyoming, Black Hills area of South Dakota, and hill country area of Texas are leading contenders.

I think the hill country appeals most to me, of those you suggested. We were just out there and it was as nice as every other time we visited the area.

The problem with the Hill Country is it's becoming another bastion of California.  As more of the alt left Californian kooks invade the area because of low taxes, relative low cost of living they are bringing their brand of politics with them and it's beginning to show.  In another ten years that area will be inhabitable much like California has now become.

We'll be visiting that area in August - that'll give us a read on how well we handle summer there and get a sense of the place.
But first we'll be visiting Cody, Sheridan, Cheyenne, and Rapid City areas in June. All those have climates we believe we could accept and, with the possible exception of Cheyenne, are generally quite scenic.

Well in less than ten years we'll likely move again. Austin by all accounts is already quite liberal. That isn't on our list of places to live - though we haven't worked out all the likely places in Texas.
