Watched the first 15 minutes or so.
Blah blah blah blah blah.
I just reached my saturation point and turned it off.
I guess I'll find out tomorrow if anything momentous happened.
-
I just turned it on and it seems to be a free for all on stage. The moderators seem to pit them against each other like in every other debate. I don't think we'll hear anything new.
-
So Cruz says, "16% tax on business" Is there not a politician alive that understands that a tax like that gets passed right to the consumer. Jackasses. ::)
-
I nearly fell off my chair when the moderator ( who I thought did a good job) quoted Harry Reid as saying he hoped the republicans wouldn't bottle up the replacement nomination, as if that corrupt jackass didn't bottle up everything that didn't adhere to the Obama agenda for the six years.
I then waited for several of the candidates to point out the hypocrisy of that statement, but they chose to talk about other things, instead, giving Dirty Harry a pass.
-

Actually, it gets passed to the consumer, AFTER it gets marked up. When I owned a business, any money I had to pay anyone in order to stay in business needed an ROI. Taxes included. After all, it is just an expense like any other business expense.

Was he talking about Corporate income tax? If so it now varies from 15% all the way up to a whopping 39%. So a flat 16% wouldn't be out of line.

From Cruz's website:
BUSINESS FLAT TAX – SINGLE RATE: 16%
The corporate income tax along with the payroll tax are abolished, replaced by a 16% Business Flat Tax.
- The current corporate tax code is riddled with years of accumulated loopholes and special favors, burdening U.S. businesses with the highest top tax rate among the advanced nations. This convoluted and anti-competitive structure will be replaced with a simple 16% tax on net business sales (gross sales minus expenses and capital expenditures).
- The current payroll tax discourages work and job creation. The vast majority of Americans pay more in payroll tax than in income tax. The Simple Flat Tax will eliminate the payroll tax, boosting jobs and wages for working Americans, while guaranteeing funding for Social Security and Medicare.
-
Reince Priebus needs his ass kicked for allowing these cage fights to be paraded as "debates".
-
From Cruz's website:
Thanks, then than makes a lot of sense. Replaces payroll tax also, so even better.
-

Eppy, although I haven't reviewed what he is proposing yet, 16% is less than half of the current what is essentially 35% federal tax rate on business. Sounds like a good deal to me, but I am going to look up exactly what he is proposing.

He'll promise anything you want to hear for a vote.
The reality is Congress holds the purse, and only Congress can set tax rates. A President Cruz would have to convince Congress to go along with him and change the rates.
With the present congress and it's lame leadership, good luck.
-
Lucifer, I think most of congress' problems are related to weak president along with very weak congressional leaders. I think a strong president will shake things up enough that some coordination will start to happen.
Eppy, I just read Cruz's proposal on a flat tax and he doesn't give enough detail on the business tax to be of use. He states that the rate will be based on "The tax will be based on revenues minus expenses such as equipment, computers, and other business investments."
The 35% rate is based on income (profit). If Cruz's proposal is based on profit, then it is a clear winner in my book. If it is based on gross revenues, with only allowances for equipment and investments, then it would be an unmitigated disaster much more costly to business than the 35% as it sounds like payroll and other expenses would be taxed. That would be, as Trump keeps saying, a VAT instead of an income tax as we know it.
That Cruz hasn't clarified this is disturbing to me.

The Democratic side of Congress is indeed strong, they show that by leading Ryan/McConnell around by the nose and forcing them to give them EVERYTHING they want. In reality Harry Reid is still in charge of the Senate and the dems still control the House.
A President Cruz will have a difficult if not impossible task of getting anything through as the democrats hate him and half of the Republicans (including the majority of Senate Republicans) despise him.
Now all of this is based upon the current make up of Congress. Come November that could change dramatically.
Bottom line is this: Unless the President can form a coalition in Congress and the Senate, any and all proposals by a candidate is nothing more than vote pandering.

The Republicans will be forced to support a President Cruz to some extent. They don't want to lose either house so they'll find a way to work with him.

Agreed.

The Republicans (and Democrats) in Congress only care about themselves and their lobbyist/Donors. Look at the support the Republicans have given Obama since taking control of the Senate and having overwhelming control of the House.
You are only kidding yourself if you think that somehow the Republican Congress and Senate will coalesce around a Republican President who has gone out of his way to alienate members of his own party.

Reagan did it, but that was a different time, and a different place.

Very true. Cruz is no Reagan.
-
The point is, why tax businesses at all? It just gets passed right on to the consumer.

I get that, but people are too stupid to understand that.

Rush Limbaugh: Ted Cruz is the closest we’ve gotten to Ronald Reagan in our lifetimes

A slight edit for all the Hillary and Bernie supporters out there...

Well hell...........if RUSH has said it, it must be true! ;D
Besides, Reagan didn't go around bashing the Republican Party either.

The Republican party has changed since 1979. There was far less risk of guys like Roberts, Ryan, Rubio, McConnel, Boehner, ...etc blatantly changing teams.

True.

Finally got a chance to watch the entire debate. I found it embarrassing that everyone, with the exception of Carson, allowed themselves to be goaded into the personal attacks by the moderators. Seeing that CBS is a main stream outlet and pulls from a larger overall audience, I suspect that many folks were turned off by the whole debate. In my opinion Carson was the only adult on the stage.

Reince Priebus is an ass for going along with these absurd debates. If they want a true debate, put it on CSPAN, no audience and pick neutral moderators and leave out the personal bullshit and stick to real topics, and give them time to discuss positions.

I heard some commentators on Fox saying it was "good TV" meaning there was a lot of colorful infighting and drama. That's what the want. They don't want a good, solid debate of the issues, they want RATINGS and MONEY.

Ding! Ding! Ding!...........We have a winner!
