I keep hearing the word "private" but then he is probably buying it to make money. Turn it into a great new actual free speech platform and then turn around and sell it?

Coincidentally I have seen a lot of ads for Mastodon in the last two days, which is a new Twitter-like alternative but is decentralized. Unlike Twitter it isn’t owned and monitored by a company. The users own it on separate discreet servers and each server can have its own set of rules. Each one is called an “instance” with its own members but the posts can be seen across the entire platform, so it functions like one platform, but has no centralized control. The term “instance” is reminiscent of gaming, where the same “location” can exist simultaneously in several different dimensions for separate groups of players, and the entire universe can exist on separate servers each with its own set of members who can sometimes intersect for certain events. The genius of the guy that invented Mastodon is to apply this to social media addressing the problem of biased censorship by the centralized corporate authority yet allowing small groups to censor as they see fit.
Maybe Musk suddenly sees Mastodon, or the new idea in general, as an existential threat to Twitter, which it may well be, much like crypto is catching on for the exact same reason: not regulated by a central authority.
I don’t think the guy that invented Mastodon is some populist free speech proponent. If Musk stops censoring the right and they all come back to Twitter, maybe the left will run to this new alternative and Twitter will devolve into a right wing echo chamber. Much like the left have all run from this forum. The guy is German and I get the idea his original instance is left leaning but confess I really don’t know much about him.

The simple way to look at this.
Twitter is for sale. They claim XXXXXX number of users. Musk bases his purchase offer on the information provided.
During the purchase negotiations it's discovered that Twitter, through the use of bots, has greatly inflated the number of users (misrepresentation).
Musk wants the purchase readjusted to reflect the actual numbers, which will in essence mean a lower price. Musk threatens to walk if this isn't accomplished.
Share holders will burn the board to the ground if they don't cooperate, because the revelations that much of Twitter is a fake insider controlled service will devalue them further.

I’m not sure of anything. I only just watched that video, which includes a letter Musk just filed with the SEC yesterday, in which he accuses Twitter of material breach of contract. It seems clear that if Twitter doesn’t provide the raw data he wants, he will certainly pull out. And so far Twitter has been obstinate about not providing it. Also this guy mentions that several shareholders are already filing suit against both Musk and Twitter.
What I don’t know is whether this was Musk’s plan all along, to just destroy Twitter and wasn’t ever serious about owning it. I kind of doubt it, but either way, it’s hilarious and Twitter is getting no less than what it deserves.

I won’t bother to link it but Styx says Musk probably did all this deliberately and is making fools of Twitter. When he first announced he was going to buy it they all screamed in panic no he can’t did that! Now they desperately want him to buy it, so much so they’re suing for it. What happened to them being horrified by the idea? The process has revealed the extent of bots and fake accounts iow how overvalued it was, and hence Twittter stock is crashing, Musk will end up negotiating a lesser price, owning Twitter and save billions off his original offer. Styx says Musk didn’t get where he was by being stupid.
Anyway that’s what he said. We shall see.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — As Elon Musk takes over Twitter this week and begins looking for ways to make the $44 billion-dollar company more profitable, some employees are starting to worry about the future of their jobs.
And none more so than Shea L. Porter, a content moderation specialist who's been working for Twitter full-time for 4 hours a week since 2019. According to sources within the company, Porter is the one who made the decision to lock The Babylon Bee out of its account after the satirical news site gave Rachel Levine its coveted "Man of the Year" award.
"You know, I'm starting to wonder if I might be in trouble here," he confided in coworker Ally Federer. "I don't know. I just feel like it might be frowned upon to make a content moderation decision that may have resulted in the entire company getting sold and the whole discourse around free speech in this country shifting."
"Like, did I change Western Civilization forever just because I was a little grumpy that day?" According to Porter, he had a heavy workload back in March when he decided to lock The Bee out of its account and was just a little on edge, resulting in the decision that may have shifted the tides of the war over free speech and big tech censorship forever.
"It was a pretty rough day for me," he admitted. "I was putting in extra hours to get a project done, so I'd worked, like, 8 hours the week before. The cafeteria was out of red wine on tap, and I found the garlic shrimp a little mealy, which is weird, because Fernando down there in the kitchen is usually on point. So, I dunno. I let my emotions get the better of me."
At publishing time, Musk had called Porter into his office and asked him, "So, what would you say... you do here?"
