Title: Oshkosh
Post by: jb1842 on July 01, 2021, 01:15:17 PM
It's that month a lot of us look forward to. Who's all going? When and where are we meeting for drinks, food, etc.? I brought home our new travel trailer yesterday, and have been  slowly working all day to organize and put all our stuff in it. My alarm is set early tomorrow to try to get an electric/water site. Going to book all week if I can.

The wife will be working in Milwaukee for a few days and the kid will be with the grandparents for a few days, so I will be left unsupervised early in the week.

Excellent, but I just found a new gin:  Plymouth.  Smoooooth. Probably too smooth for a proper gin and tonic, but great on the rocks. It’s only 84 proof I think.

Plymouth supplied the British Navy with gin, and in fact they have a version called Navy Strength. My brother found me a bottle in Illinois and I’ll try it this weekend. 114 proof.

Final tuneup flight today for the Warbird Island approach to OSH. That 100mph gear speed sure is a challenge to finesse.

The Cutlass I used to fly had a 140kt gear speed. Want to slow down?  Drop the gear.

With the Navion, while watching CHTs, it’s back off 1”MP, trim. Reduce 1”MP, trim again. Rinse repeat until I get to gear speed.

Nice. I'm looking at pulling into Camp Scholler somewhere around 5-6 on Saturday.

I was working the threshold of 18.  This DC-10 landed on 36, and I thought he was going to go to the terminal on Taxiway A, so I was marshaling him off to my left. but instead he turned around to taxi down to Boeing square. I was under the wing when he turned. The jet blast almost knocked me over. I knew what was coming so I turned my back to it. So only my neck and legs got the brunt of it.

I did two shifts yesterday. 7+ hours standing on runways and taxiways. Traffic was light unfortunately. Wx was perfect to fly in. I hope it picks up for this afternoon’s shift.

I'm in BFE. 19th and Aspen. But close to exit and shower house. But my wife who is supposed to drive up tomorrow now has car problems. I might have drive to Ohio and back tomorrow if our neighbor mechanic can't fix it easy for us.

Today’s office. North side of 9/27 on B3 looking at the green dot. At one point winds we’re 320@14G21.   Nice job by today’s pilots flying into the show. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210725/915b38c3ba12089fb041d5367fcfa9ec.jpg)

I love watching flights in progress. When I was young I never would have dreamed of being able to track a flight in real time on a computer or even a device in my pocket! It’s amazing. My 90 something mother was even more amazed. I used to pull up on the laptop the flight of my sister on her way to visit, and she would sit there and watch it the entire time.

I remember tracking Mark’s flight from Berlin. Comforting somehow to know it was still (allegedly) up in the air over the Atlantic.

I did the Warbird Island arrival today. Soooo much easier than the Fisk Arrival.

Shit. I didn’t hear about that. That sucks.

Too busy for much social media, plus EAA wifi sucks.

Looks like the weather is really going to hate fuck Wisconsin/Oshkosh tomorrow evening. Up to 80 mph winds, large hail, tornado conditions, over half inch of rain. Think I will go down and stay the night in Milwaukee with the wife and kid instead of bringing him up tomorrow.

Hoping it isn't going to be that bad or it misses us, but it wouldn't be Oshkosh without some bad weather.

This is from the National Weather Service....

Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and evening. A significant severe weather event is expected, especially between 6 pm and 11 pm. Some of the storms could produce destructive winds, large hail, and torrential rainfall which could lead to urban flooding. There is also a risk of tornadoes, especially from central Wisconsin into the southern Fox Valley. Be sure to closely monitor later forecasts on this potentially dangerous weather situation.

What with the non-mask-wearing owners dropping dead in a few months, and now a reduction in the fleet, Jim had better move sharpish at the right moment to find an aircraft bargain.  :)

Heard homebuilt camping was clearing out. Have a friend up there that was taking their CAF T-6 back to Indiana.  One of chapter young folks hitched a ride up there in a Skymaster and they left to head back this morning.

 ;)

Around 3:45 I had got a drink from a vendor and sat down to watch the airshow when a few minutes later an employee went around telling everyone at their tables that they were closing their little area at 4:00 and the grounds were closing at 5:00.

At the moment (~7:45) it looks like the major cells will pass to the north, so Oshkosh may only see a little rain if new cells don’t form.

I’m still in Chicago and had to watch all this on radar and getting sitreps from my friends. Sounds like my Boy Scout rope-tying skills are still intact and my Navion made it through unscathed. I’ll be back by cocktail time.

I heard Ripon got nailed with a possible tornado. There but for the grace of God.

I thought it was kind of weird show. The airshows were not very good, especially the Saturday night show. Kind of a weird vibe, but still good to get back at it.

I agree. Seemed weird and also that the EAA dropped the ball on a few things. Need to redo bus routes and trams again. Took me an hour on Monday to get from scholler to the museum and takes 3 buses to do it.
