Apparently an ongoing set of mis-steps. I actually liked America West …

Wash-Rinse-Repeat.

The airlines have been ripe for corporate raiders since deregulation.    Watch the upper level management of these airlines, the same names keep cropping up at different carriers.

As a libertarian free market capitalist I'm supposed to like the deregulation but I have to say, flying back in the early 1970s was many times more pleasant than it is now.

I remember taking a flight in the mid-60s to visit my grandparents in Florida. Much more pleasant experience. You actually just parked outside the terminal at MSP in this huge parking lot and walked in, then over to the gate. No scanners or searches or anything. All the seats had meal service with silverware.

It was also considerably more expensive in real terms. The current highly regulated oligopolistic structure is freer than it was — the CAB literally used to set both permitted routes and fares. But it would require a very large market change to get to meaningful levels of competition in the US commercial airline industry.

You’re right. I think that if we had true anti-trust laws, you would prohibit consolidation of airlines (or any business) that eliminates choice and competition for the consumer.

I’d say Congress has been asleep at the switch, but we all know they are intentionally ignoring the implications of mega mergers, because thet means their pockets and re-election campaign accounts become gold-lined.

If politicians have the power, they will almost certainly sell it to the highest bidder.
