Title: Email Provider Recommendation?
Post by: nddons on April 20, 2022, 08:41:27 PM
Having sold my home, we need to drop our internet services from Spectrum.  Unfortunately, our email addresses are tied to Spectrum (Road Runner), and I found out we can’t keep our email accounts after our services terminate. Stupid and shortsighted by Spectrum, but whatever.

Now I need to find a new email provider. 70% of the people I know use Gmail, but I hate Google and the loss of all privacy. Some still use AOL, others use Yahoo, and my brother uses Mail.com (looks promising.)  All those are free.

I’m willing to pay a fee for a more private email provider, but things like Reagan.com and 1791.com both have horrible reviews.

I’d appreciate recommendations.

I recently switched to fastmail.com. It lives up to its name, IMHO. Its HQ is in Australia but its servers are in the U.S. I've had the domain lugoj.com for over 25 years and always select an email provider that allows domain name hosting. Having my own domain allows full control of the DNS records so I can switch providers as needed.

If you are looking for privacy from government snoops then protonmail, among others, would be better.

I’ve been using the free version of Zoho for over ten years and have been happy with it.  They don’t snoop or sell your data, no ads, they claim it’s encrypted.  They make money because they offer a whole suite of paid plans for business.    When I googled it just now I found a bunch of complaints about their support but I’ve never needed to contact support (knock on wood) so I can’t speak to that.

I also have a protonmail account and sorry to say still have an old EarthLink account, paid version.  The EarthLink interface is the best, it’s still PC friendly.  Everyone else is going to phone style UI which I loathe. Zoho changed its UI a few years back and I’m less happy with it now.

I won’t use gmail anymore.

I know some have an allergy to POA, but there was a recent thread about alternative email providers.

Resurrecting an old thread.  I was reading a PCMag review of Proton mail and everything says I should do it, but then I read this:

"When you encrypt a message for someone not using Proton Mail, you set a password and optionally a password hint. Naturally, you must transmit that password via some other channel, perhaps an encrypted messaging app. By default, encrypted messages to those not using Proton Mail expire after 28 days, though you can disable expiry or set a shorter expiration time, right down to a single hour. Messages between Proton Mail users don't expire.

"When your correspondent receives the message, it comes with an explanation, along with a link to view the message content online. The recipient simply enters the password to see your important missive. A banner above the message body counts down to the message's expiration."
https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/protonmail

Is it that much of a pain in the ass to send a message to people who aren't on Proton mail?  Since 100% of the people I know are not on Proton mail, I don't want to go through a multi-step process so they can unencrypt an email sent from me.  Just curious of your experience, Rush.

Yes it kinda is. I wish everyone would get a proton account.  I only use it when I really need to send something that I don’t want to be snooped and I send the link so they have to read it on the secure site, not directly to their “gmail” or whatever.  But there is one thing it is really good for.  My sister has a protected VPN and email domain that shields her messages and we can share mom’s stuff that way without it having to go to a linked proton website.

But yeah I can’t use proton mail as much as I would like because of other people’s idiocy sticking with gmail which is basically the same as cc’ing the NSA all your messages.  No offense to those that use gmail, my own husband does. I even still have one but I don’t use it anymore.

It has become very problematic to change emails because your email address is usually the default way to recover accounts you’ve forgotten the password for.

I use Protonmail.  The stuff I send, I'm generally not concerned with.

My biggest concern is paperwork that has my mom’s birthdate on it and stuff.  Of course in retrospect we probably should all be concerned if we sent an email to anyone indicating that we thought the 2020 election might have contained some fraud. Apparently having that thought is a literal crime. Only 2020 though, not 2016.

you’re a funny guy!  I’ll retire at the end of 2025 I think. We bought a lot in the Wisconsin Northwoods, and will be building a home. In fact we’re up here this weekend. Hiked to some waterfalls with
Our daughter and the two boys. This is on the shore of Lake Superior today (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230919/050ae57a1f587b198e9c815d6a72069a.jpg)

So do you need to send the non-proton mail recipients something so they can decipher the encrypted message?  If it’s not “hit send” and move on, it seems a little troublesome.

They offer free email accounts so you should be able to do a test run.

Only if you want to send it securely, you will need to give them a password to access the link to read the message. But if you aren't worried about the lack of security on THEIR end, you just send it normally.  Since it's free, I like the idea of using it anyway just so people see it and it becomes more popular.

Congratulations on your pending retirement!  And a great looking family you have there.

On a separate but related note, one of our three dogs passed away last week.  Very sad, but now we're looking at all the shelters around to find a new family member.  I was going to retire in two years, but I got the itch to upgrade the plane to something faster, so it may be a bit longer.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Depending on what I want to do with the plane (and a boat when I retire) I may drag it on another year.

I’m sorry about your dog. My daughter is a veterinarian she’s had to put down a couple of dogs recently that bothered her. They all impact these vets, but some hurt more than others.

I don’t know what it is about dogs. I can’t think about our two dogs for one second (we had to put down) without immediately getting choked up.  I can think about my deceased father and sister all day without tears.  And I loved them.  But the dogs, and it’s been several years, that pain just stays near the surface forever.

I think it's a special kind of love that these dogs give. Parents, siblings, yeah.  It hurts but not the same as all the dogs we've lost over the years.  I don't know why that is.  We found a great senior German Shepherd at the shelter yesterday.  Tired, skinny, but bright eyes and way intelligent.  We'll make sure that he lives out his days in luxury.

To humans, dogs are a part of our lives. But to dogs, we ARE their life.

Dog lovers know that intuitively.

Yep. She’s our only kid, so we want to stay at least within the same state as she is living in.

About five years ago I brought home a dirty, starving, malnourished, abused, older dog.

She has brought us unmeasurable joy.

I can’t imagine the day we lose her.

To humans, dogs are a part of our lives. But to dogs, we ARE their life.

Dog lovers know that intuitively.

That must be what it is. To a dog, we are their entire existence. But to another human, no matter how close we are, we are only a portion of their lives, and they are only a portion of ours.  No matter how devoted they are to us, they’re never as completely devoted as our dog is.  A dog loves us with 1000% of their being.  A human, even our devoted spouse, can only be like 90% at best.
