I can't believe this still comes up.  The guy who authored the report linking autism and vaccines recanted and apologized.  But this is still making trouble, and we now have epidemics of diseases that could easily be prevented with vaccines.  We had a mumps outbreak in my very own neighborhood.  This is the height of utter stupidity.

Moreover, even if the initial report were true, WHICH IT ISN'T!, the documented rate of vaccine-created autism is utterly dwarfed by the rate at which children die from the diseases against which we immunize ourselves.  This is just anti-science idiocy, and I am embarrassed to live in a nation where people are dumb enough to believe in it.

Spin Zone / Re: Pedestrian and bicylist responsibility

One of the problems in human biology is humans don't often see what they don't expect to see.  If you don't believe me tell someone the thing you want is in the red box in the living room, then put a conspicuous blue box there.  They won't see it.

People don't expect bicycles, and they don't expect motorcycles, so they don't see them.  I've had people just about run me off the road looking right at me.  Now, I've been riding bikes for decades, and I've mostly kept the shiny side up.  I think I have reasonably good habits, since I certainly don't have mad skilz.

Bicycles are a very different animal.  I have the power on my motorcycle to get myself out of the way.  A bicyclist doesn't have that at all.  Puts them in an insanely vulnerable position that I will not permit myself to be in.

They were putting in a protected bike path that goes from my house to my work.  Once its done I might start taking bicycle.  I wouldn't without the path.  Too dangerous.  I've already been hit on a bike, in fact everyone I know who commutes on a bicycle has been hit, some badly enough to require hospitalization.

I think the Mods really messed up.  Might stop going there myself, not out of spite or anything, its just starting to get a bit old.

Reminds me of when I my old man had a drug store.  His was one of the last ones in town, or anywhere, with a soda fountain.  The soda fountain didn't make any money at all and was a bit of a hassle, but when it was closed the store was just dead.

Interesting the OP uses history to support his religious bigotry, but it should be mentioned at least in passing that when they powers of the Caliphate captured Jerusalem they killed hundreds.  When the soldiers of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem, they killed everyone.

If you're talking about a "boosted fission" weapon, generally, you're talking about pumping in tritium, not deuterium.  Tritium (the unstable isotope of hydrogen with 2 neutrons) is a fantastic neutron source, as it releases them spontaneously and rapidly.  Deuterium is completely stable by itself.

I stand corrected, thank you.

Uh oh, I guess I left my guard down and gave Eppya glimpse of my clairvoyant abilities. Silly me.

I suspect the N Koreans aren't lying, but what they're calling an H bomb isn't what we think of.  To us ab H bomb is a fusion device far more powerful than the fission bombs the NKs have been detonating.  However, there is a method for putting some hydrogen, deuterium I think, into the core of the device to accelerate the fission reaction.  It's one of the ways you can reduce the size of the device so it fits on a missile.

If so the test was an abject failure. It produced less explosive energy than their last attempt, which had a smaller yield than the bomb we dropped on Hiroshima.  That said, dear leader wasn't lying.  His boys did detonate a nuclear bomb that had hydrogen in it.

Congress never fixed the problem that caused the crash in the first place, and the Obaminator did little to spur them on.  They're all owner by Wall Street anyway. It'll happen again. I think the current jitters are in response to China, though.

Whether or not I agree with the moderation policies, the site is one of the best maintained I've seen.  I can count the number of times I've been unable to get on on the fingers of one hand.  The AOPA site goes down all the time, for comparison.

I may not get along well with Jesse, but I give him a great deal of well deserved credit.

The Germans are likely to be very happy about the migrants.  They have overemployment to a degree that lots of companies can't find labor.  The migrants mostly want to work and earn a good life, same as anybody.  This could be a real boon for the Germans.

The downfall will be when states and regions begin seceding.  I will happen, just not in our lifetimes. America is still the richest and greatest nation on Earth.

Yeah, the consequences of anthropogenic warming have defied expectations.  Hurricane deficit rather than increase, ice losses in the Antarctic instead of the Arctic, etc.

I just wish I was wrong about ocean acidification.

So I hear this "this person is a hypocrite because they say they believe in climate change and...".  Al Gore is the most frequent target of this kind of ire.

Says me, what are they supposed to do? Live in a shack and eat shit?  Ford is a big time movie star, cuts not like he can just fly commercial.

I walk the walk.  Yeah, I fly an airplane, but mine gets better mileage than a lot of cars. I walk to work, and on those rare occasions when I actually drive I either use a very efficient vehicle or a motorcycle.

I don't think big time celebrities can do what I do.  I know for a fact that Gore does what he can to offset his rather large CO2 footprint.  It is very possible Ford does as well.  But I am not in big hurry to jump down their throats. Celebrity gives one limitations.

As far as deniers, we have sixty degree weather on Christmas in Ohio. Nothing normal about that.

The only difference is the GOP folks are more slick about it and don't get caught quite so readily.

I'll never understand why you guys bitch so.  The GOP has control of nearly every state legislature in the US, not to mention lots of governorships.

Spin Zone / Re: Clinton has a plan to fix schools
« on: December 25, 2015, 11:43:11 AM »
My plan would be to have magnet schools that are really good, and then the rest that suck.  Poor performance or disciplinary problems would send students back to the poor schools.  I think there are students for whom the schools can do nothing, so they should probably focus on those for whom they can.
