Spin Zone / Re: Somalia Bans Christmas - "Has nothing to do with Islam"

Yeah, really points up religious intolerance.  That said, in Somalia they do have an active Islamist insurgency, so they could just be trying not to give them any easy targets.

Still a crying shame no matter how you look at it.

It might have failed because of the whole monopoly thing.  Then again, Ohio might not be ready for legal marijuana yet.  Mark Twain used to quip that if the world came to an end he wanted to be in Cincinnati.  Everything there happens ten years later.

Why exactly do we NEED manned spaceflight?  Robots have been doing a stellar job (if you'll forgive the pun) lately.

Spin Zone / Ohio votes to legalize weed today
« on: November 03, 2015, 02:41:57 PM »
A really funny election.  There is an issue basically starting a monopoly for the cultivation of marijuana.  10 sites to be run by a cabal of investors.  You can have one ounce or pay a license to grow the stuff (four plants) and can have 8 ounces from your cultivation.

At the same time there's another issue that bans monopolies form the state constitution.  Fun election.

I hope the legal ganja passes, I really do. I'd like to see another nail in the growing coffin for the War on Drugs.  I suspect it'll take awhile for the Feds to catch up to it though.

In my neighborhood the parents walked with the kids, but the only ones drinking beer were super dad (with his super gut) and yours truly.  And it was fun.

NASA has only been exploring the solar system, with probes to many of the planets and landers on Mars.  Apparently none of you noticed the first ever flyby of Pluto by the New Horizons spacecraft.

Apparently all this just isn't enough for some people.

There's a huge difference between your teaching environment and a high school.  In college it's primarily the student's responsibility to make sure that he knows the subject matter to pass the class.  In high school the responsibility of educating falls on the school.  You could fail every student in one of your classes and if you could document that every student did not know the minimums the chips fall where they may.  If a public school teacher did that SHE would be at fault for not being able to get the material across to the students...and rightly so.

The teacher needs 100% control of the classroom, within reason, so that she can do her job.

How exactly does sending a girl out of the room educate her better than leaving her in situ.  By the way, you can't force anyone to learn anything.  Can't be done.  If they don't want to learn it doesn't matter what you do, they won't.

Does that apply to all those game shows as well?  Probably even mores, since I imagine there are more reasons to watch Ellen deGeneres than to see her give away stuff.  If nothing else, she's way better looking than Drew Carry.

You didn't answer my question. What else's should have been done?  Let her continue to disrupt class?

I've yet to see anything suggesting the student was being disruptive outside her noncompliance.  And omygoodness, she just lost her mother?  The teacher couldn't be a little sensitive to the fact?

I had a lecture about chromosomal sex determination and made the mistake of mentioning Jenner.  Weird.  Dude was on Wheaties boxes for chissakes!

I'll hold my nose and vote for the Hildebeast for two reasons.  The first is I think she'd actually make an impressive POTUS.  All these guys lie their heads off, so I'm not that worried about that.  The second is if she does become POTUS its going to be so fun listening to you guys bitch about it!

As much as I hate to say this, and I really really hate to say this, to some degree things are as they should be.  The CEO of GM has a lot more on the line than I do, guy is in charge of factories and dealerships and jobs and stuff.  Me, its must me, Mrs. Steingar, the dogs, and Rosie the tortoise.  The CEO of GM should have more access than I.

The Saudis actually run a considerable deficit despite all the oil money.  The sponsor free college for everyone, but no one studies any sort of STEM field.  They all study religion (Whahibbism, the WORST form of Islam).  So in addition to sending everyone to school they have to import all their skilled labor.  And the excesses of the royal family are truly amazing, the princes indulge in every sort of vice that is forbidden in the Quran and functionally illegal in the country.  Saudi Arabia will quickly join the list of failed states the moment the oil money runs out.

Most of the 911 hijackers were Saudis, by the way.

This is such bullshit.  Hooray, I can say Bullshit!

Students in my class have phones out all the time.  Do I care?  I use all sorts of technology in the classroom.  If they'd rather goof off than listen to me, what do I care?

From every news account I've seen the student wasn't being disruptive, just non compliant.  Fine.  Leave her be.  Let her goof off on her phone.  Let them all do it, and flunk them all on their next exam.  The smart ones will figure it out, and I haven't time to worry about the rest.

Besides, if there's one thing a teenage girl doesn't like, its begin ignored.
