Neither former slaves nor slave owners are alive today. Furthermore, columnist and radio host Michael Medved says that only about 5 percent of whites have any sort of “generational” connection to slavery. “The importation of slaves came to an end in 1808 (as provided by the Constitution), a mere 32 years after independence, and slavery had been outlawed in most states decades before the Civil War,” wrote Medved in 2007. “Even in the South, more than 80 percent of the white population never owned slaves. Given the fact that the majority of today’s non-black Americans descend from immigrants who arrived in this country after the War Between the States, only a tiny percentage of today’s white citizens – perhaps as few as 5 percent – bear any authentic sort of generational guilt for the exploitation of slave labor.”

My background is Irish. Think the blacks had a difficult time? Go back and read how bad the Irish were treated.

I agree that the Irish had it tough. But are you seriously saying they had it as tough as black slaves?

I don't think so.
In some instances, worse. To be Irish back in the day, some weren't even considered as human. Many Irish were forced into indentured servitude, if not outright slavery.
Now let's be realistic. This happened way, way back in the past. No one alive today were involved, and if you looked at the percentages (just like black slavery) those numbers are very small.
My point is just how ridiculous this is getting. The article in the OP sums it up quite well.

The Irish certainly were not part of the slave owners and most didn’t get here until well after the unCivil War. So, should they be on the hook for paying reparations simply for being white?
My ancestors were in Utah, Ireland and Poland when slavery ended here. I am only the third person in my family with a college degree and the first with more than a Batchelor's. The idea that the current condition of the black community is my fault in any way falls completely flat with me.

I hope nobody interprets my comment as endorsing the idea of reparations. I just find it implausible to suggest that the Irish had it tougher than enslaved blacks. I have more American Indian blood in me than Elizabeth Warren, but I don't expect reparations for something that that was done to and by people that died over 200 years ago.

No one is saying or implying one group had it tougher than the other. What is being stated is how ridiculous reparations are to people who have not been harmed.
Two of my relatives died defending the Alamo. Maybe my family should demand reparations from Mexico? Hmmmmmm
