Title: and this is why...
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on February 27, 2020, 08:26:32 AM
...I don't invest in the stock market.

Looking at how stocks are doing, I'm left with one main thought:  Are people insane?

The sky is falling, the sky is falling...

edit:  ok, yes, I have a (really) small amount of my retirement in a growth fund.  With the stocks in freefall, pretty soon I won't have to make my total portfolio less volatile (how this will happen is left as an exercise for the reader).

Well, as you know, the Stock Markets are often viewed as long term, long horizon investments as they can be volatile.  That is why at our ages we have less and less invested in stock funds, or individual stocks as many of us are nearing or in retirement.

Look at the run up the stock markets have had over the past 5 - 10 years.  Huge gains.  This virus related recent correction may be just a temporary correction, but one will happen that won't be at some point, and that's why you have to be able to ride it out, not panic sell, and have an investment exit scenario many years in the future.

Chinese manufacturing is down.  The supply chain will soon be affected, and you can expect to see the impact here once stores run low.  I'm not that smart and I figured this out.  i imagine the Wall St. types have as well and are reacting.

it doesn't take any imagination to understand that people are overreacting

And also attempting to blame Trump, and use it as another opportunity to say we're going to have a recession, the sky is failing, etc.

COVID-19 isn't Trump's fault.  Personally I don't think it anyone's fault except perhaps those who persist in eating bush meat.  I blame Trump for plenty, but not for something completely out of his control.  We humans think we control everything, but the merest life forms can make a mockery of our mastery.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that you were blaming Trump.  Some in the Media and Democrat leaders like Pelosi are criticizing Trump for his "anemic" response to the virus.  From what I can see he's taken every, reasonable measure necessary for these types of threats.

I do think the media, as they usually do is sensationalizing it.  We're not talking about the Bubonic Plague, nor Anthrax.

Actually he took strong early steps like quarantining travelers returning from infected areas when other countries weren’t and that’s why we have a low incidence compared to those other countries.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment:

Other possible factors that might contribute to differences in reported incidence rate:  lower rate of travel to/from China?, healthier travelers?, better diagonsis (e.g., it's not the coronavirus but just a regular cold, so stop panicking)?  lots of variables in play...

True. Nevertheless Trump made the right call, and people were criticizing him for it.

He's a racist!

He did say in the press conference that he was actually called a racist because he banned entry in the country of Chinese travelers.

I’m watching for the buying opportunities. There will be great bargains that are going to give a good return.

So we went down a total of $123,000 with the corona virus bust, and yesterday in just one day, regained $38,000.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!! What a wild ride.

Which is good, because usually after a big gain you get a pull back the next day or so.  Overall, as the virus hype goes away, the market will rebound.  I'm letting mine ride, as always.  YMMV.

The markets know that Biden can't beat Trump, but even if the unlikely happens, Biden would have a difficult time doing ANYTHING, so...........

I wonder if it’s a response to Trump announcing he might put a stop to this shutdown soon.

I think it's no coincidence he chose Easter, the Jesus rose from the dead.  It should really piss off some lefties.

I thought the same thing.  Yes, Christianity, in fact Judeo Christianity pisses off the Lefties tremendously.  Good.  Of course they would hate a positive, optimistic message as their entire Progressive ideology is based on the hope human failure and pessimism.

Trump would only be able to control federally instituted closures and controls. I believe that mostly relates to restrictions imposed on national border crossings.

There are more republican controlled states than democrat controlled.  For the most part, the republican controlled states will follow the lead while the dem strongholds will attempt to hold out, only to destroy their economies even more.

The hardcore leftist progressive states will demand the fed gov to bail them out.   I wouldn't be surprised to see the People's Republic of California finally implode under this.
