Title: Abandoned and Little Known Airfields
Post by: nddons on November 11, 2021, 08:24:46 AM
Since Dr Peter keeps trying to turn this pilot site into an aviation site , I thought I’d share a really great website. You’d be surprised how many of us drive over, live on, or shop at places that used to be an airport. Kind of depressing actually.

I used to live near the Glenview Naval Air Station. That was the first place I knew I wanted to be a pilot, when I saw the Blue Angels perform in their F-4 Phantoms in the early 1970s. This site has a fascinating history of that field.

LOL!

From the article:

Quote
When I'm a passenger on commercial flights,

I've always found myself looking out the window, constantly looking for airfields below.

I do that too. At least on the rare occasions I have a window seat. These days I try to get aisles, the better to go pee and the better to get up to deplane. I have a thing about wanting to get my hands on my bag in the overhead ASAP. You also have slightly more wiggle room to reach your under the seat bag, and you can stretch at least one leg straight for a moment as long as nobody’s walking down the aisle.

Haha! That is a great website. I tend to get a bit lost on it browsing around. I combines three of my favorite interests. History, maps, and aviation.

I've used this website for years and have visited many.  I've also grown up with a few I remember as a kid.  Very cool site.

I remember looking at the site years ago when I lived in Montgomery AL. There’s a WWI airfield that was quite large. Taylor Field was the name. Had mostly Jennys and one or two other types. Really just a big open square field where they could always takeoff and land into the wind. Foundations of the many hangars and buildings used to be visible from the air but now subdivisions are eroding all those away.

Not too far east of Taylor was the Tuskegee Army Airfield. Only one runway is left and functional. The Tuskegee Airman Museum is actually located on Moton Airfield which back then was an auxcillary airport of TAAF. Most don’t realize that’s not the true airfield.

Maxwell AFB on the west side of Montgomery was the site of the Wright Brothers first flight school. I think it was before Maxwell was built there.

Yeah I could spend hours viewing that web site, and I have.
