Spin Zone / Re: ERA ratification?
« on: November 26, 2018, 07:52:14 PM »
I agree with all that except maybe women signing up for the draft.

Jobs in the US armed forces run about 10:1 for support vs combat ops. the ratio changes a little depending on how one calculates support and combat ops, but even at a more conservative 6:1 support to combat, there are tons of jobs within the armed forces that can be done without getting anywhere near the bad end of a rifle(or bazooka, or howitzer, or ...).

This is not an indictment of women serving in combat ops jobs, just that if a gender-free draft were implemented, the women could certainly request a support billet, but they still would need to serve, just like the men. My time in uniform provided ample evaluation of women in uniform. By and large, I found them more capable than the equivalent rank, and training to the men I worked with.

If the ERA wants a truly gender neutral world, then I would say the draft is part of the deal.

I'm really surprised that Trump supporters here can't see what's going on. Trump implements a policy decision, and the ACLU or some other left wing org goes to any liberal fed judge in CA or HI or IL and gets an order reversing his stance. The first and worst mistake was his re-drafting of a perfectly valid order prohibiting people from certain nations from getting into the US. There was TONS of precedent for the prez doing that, including from the prev admin! But - he folded like a cheap suit. Now, it's a regular occurrence. Trump makes a policy decision, someone goes to a lib judge, decision reversed. Fuck that, why have a president? Just make the fed courts in charge of all intl policy.

What’s chickenshit about it?  The rules are pretty much what they should be.

You have to pick which hills you’re willing to die on. This wasn’t one of them. Swat away the fly and move on.

I gave my take already. Close the press office. Trump goes off regularly on the press being the enemy of the people, so stand up and do something rather than a slew of meaningless tweets. 2017 Trump moved the Israel embassy in the face of world-wide condemnation. All he does now is tweet like a whiny basement dwelling lib. I had some respect when he pulled the pass, and the press pretty much all condemned the pres and escalated it. Fine - you want escalation? Everyone is banned. Go to the visitor entrance just like the rest of the public, no one is stopping you from reporting, but there is no constitutional requirement that says the pres must have a press office. Let the press report the work of the admin from the street, no one will stop you. I doubt Washington, or Jefferson had a press office in the WH of the time.

The American People.

He serves at the pleasure of the president.

Uh, actually - no. He works for the US govt. Again, being pedantic everyone in govt service works for the American people(small p). Read the judiciary act.

Socialist/globalists will go to any length to get what they do not deserve by merit. Lenin, Marx, Stalin killed millions along the way to the perfect socialist state. About 70 years of failure, two generations of north Asia suffered for their dream of utopia. The do-not-haves will always find a way to justify taking what is 'right' for themselves without contribution.

Actually, the judge is correct.  If you read the Immigration and Nationality Act, it clearly designates who determines asylum eligibility (paragraph 2).  The law vests that power in the Attorney General, not the President, so a presidential determination not to grant asylum has not authority.

Of course, this is how Obama ruled with is pen and the judges said it was OK then.  Would be interesting to see if this judge has a similar case that he ruled the opposite way.  It sucks when an attorney comes in and quotes yourself as precedence.

OTOH, the President saying to the Attorney General privately "don't let these people in and deport them back to Mexico for asylum" is perfectly in line with the law.  It is still the AG's decision.

OK, if you want to be pedantic, it is the AGs decision. And he works exclusively for?

The WORST judicial activism ever. The prez has always had absolute power over immigration, and border security. I'm no fan of anarchy, but if Trump obeys this order, we are doomed. Might as well not have a 3rd branch of govt at all.

The judge is wrong on so many counts. Not only that the asylum seekers(economic invaders) have no standing, there are a dozen other reasons this judge is way out of line. Trump must ignore this one finally.

Tijuana is a fairly nice little border town. I spent many nice times there back in the day. Friendly folks and decent horse racing. What a shame they are going to have all those invaders for a long, long time.

What a chickenshit way to go. I like the 2016 Trump with balls of steel. The 2018 Trump, not so much. The swamp is now up past his knees, and rising. There will be no draining.

Armed resistance in the burn zone in CA.

Seems like the LEO may have learned the lesson of Katrina where they used force to disarm citizens.

TX AG actually arrests some people for voter fraud.

In the larger context, this is only a few people, but at least they are being diligent. Wonder about FL and AZ though.

Unless or until someone comes up with rampant voter fraud and prosecutes, there's nothing to be done by wailing about it. I don't know if there is rampant voter fraud going on or not. Except for a few individual cases, in a few states, I'm not aware of anything on the order that would change an election.

FTR, the new gun law here in Vermont (new as of this year) mandates universal background checks and requires all purchases to be through a licensed firearms dealer, bans bump stocks and high capacity magazines, and imposes a minimum age of 21 to purchase. The over 21 restriction can be gotten around if the person has passed a hunters safety course. There is also a "red flag" provision to confiscate with a court order if someone is deemed a threat.

The law does nothing to limit constitutional carry, as long as the weapon is obtained legally.

I would like to question these two themes above. First para lists a group of requirements that are as I see a priori to owning and bearing a gun. If Joe Bagodonuts wants to sell a used six shooter to Jane Norapes, then that sale has to go through a licensed gun dealer? Also, restrictions on age, type, and capacity sound like infringements to me. How does that square with the second statement that the law does nothing to limit keep and bear?

The restrictions listed sound exactly like the infringement the 2A was intended to deny. the 2A doesn't say 'shall not be infringed much' or 'shall not reasonably be infringed'. There is no qualifier in the statement.

Close the damn press office. Let them sit in a corridor in the East wing, and stew.
