Title: Where would you land?
Post by: Old Crow on September 17, 2018, 12:52:40 PM
A few years back when I was getting a checkride for SES the examiner asked "If you are over the forest with no lakes or clear ground around and only trees would you try to 'land' in hardwood or evergreen trees?" I answered evergreen and he didn't answer. What would you think?

In my experience hardwood and evergreen forests don't occur coincidently.  I think I'd head for the road between them, but that's just me.

True - evergreen may be the only trees you see above certain elevations.
The valleys and lower elevations are where you'll see clusters of hardwood in riparian areas. Intermixed stands of species do occur, but normally one type dominates an area.

I'd choose whichever appeared to be shortest, with the nod to hardwood/broadleaf trees in the rare case where mixed-species stands occur. On the other hand, if there is line of hardwoods through a stand of evergreen, it generally marks the course of a stream, which could be rocky.

Wheee-ulll, to start off - if we're talking about evergreens and hardwoods I don't think we're going to "land" at all. Landing implies a subsequent take off, and unless the trees cradle the plane in their gentle arms, and then whisk it off again when power is applied, this is going to be a crash.

I took a mtn flying course many years ago when I started flying in the mtns quite a bit. It's all about energy management. I don't think there's much difference in which type of forest one hits, and energy management is true when you hit pretty much anything. What I was taught was downhill, or down slope, and near water. Aim the plane between trees if possible to shed the wings(and fuel) and hope for the best.

My very snarky response was really meant to indicate that in most places you aren’t likely to have a choice.
