Title: Holiday table talk
Post by: Becky (My pronouns are Assigned/By/God) on November 25, 2019, 03:03:18 PM
Any ideas for pleasant ways to make your opinions and observations known if things turn toward politics?

Unfortunately it seems an outright ban is the only thing that guarantees harmony, but in my experience the lefties like to drop tempting bait, only to stomp off in high dudgeon if you say what you think.

This year, I’m planning to say, “I no longer believe.” That should get me a mini-moment where I can say it is the Democrats and their media that I no longer believe. By implying that I once did, I get a little more credibility.

Other ideas?

I avoid political talk at family gatherings, I want to just enjoy being family.

What immediately came to mind was an image of Edith Bunker going on and on about something or other while Archie Bunker methodically mimed sharpening a blade and then slashing his wrists....

He used to make an imaginary noose and hang himself too.  Classic.  He was great in Kelly's Heroes pre Bunker.

We all know pretty much where each of us stands.  My sister greets me with "Happy Genocide Day."  I say "We didn't kill them all, there are still a bunch on reservations."  Have a laugh and then we get on with family stuff.  We tease each other with politics but it stays fun.  We know that we won't change any minds so we just go with it.

I prefer the Steve McQueen line to Eli Wallach in the Magnificent Seven.

You can always observe the contradictions.  I suggest something like:

"Boy, Democrats sure are lucky that Ginsberg isn't covered by the same insurance they want to force the rest of us to have.  I mean, I don't think there are any 4 time cancer survivors on Medicare."

Here’s another one - play up their fears of Trump taking over for good against their fear of guns. Hong Kong is a good example. Right now the people of Hong Kong are demonstrating what a population with no guns looks like, the people have no say and are powerless. Good thing that won’t happen here, right. If any president, say Trump, were to declare martial law, there would be millions of armed people objecting.

I have used both of those with my in-laws, and I thought they were effective.  But the problem is that liberals tend not to hear anything they don't want to, and logic doesn't really apply in their world.  As for Ginsburg, they said there would be more cancer survivors if everyone had good health insurance.  As for the Hong Kong example, they refuse to acknowledge that that could happen here.    ??? ::) >:(

The basis for all Progressive thought are lies, emotion, and more lies.  I never start political conversation with my relatives.  If they try to bait me with Trump hate, I will respond, but I never get angry, nor show emotion.  I will respond with facts.  If they ignore the facts, then too bad.  That's on them.  Then later I can mix in some of my NRA "American Rifleman" magazines with theirs on their coffee table, and in their guest bathroom.

Yes, ANY topic can be dragged by the liberals into the realm of feelz v. realz. I’m looking forward to trying “I no longer believe.” Because in the liberal world you just have to drink the Kool Aid. As we have seen with WalkAway, the only thing liberals can do with defectors is condemn and dismiss them.

My adored liberal relative believes, it seems, that people who flip houses are greedy capitalists who take affordable housing away from those who need it. I think house flippers deserve every penny for bringing neighborhoods back to life and rescuing blighted properties. If they’re doing it honestly and in a quality way, bravo.

flippers are greedy?

Isn't the real money with flipping the more expensive houses?

Are people flipping small crappy houses (e.g., some areas of Detriot are is really tough shape as shown by Ask This Old House a few seasons back)?

Of course, there are some people buying old little houses, tearing them down, and builing McMansions on undersized lots.

Yes, we’ve seen many small, old houses flipped around here, and I see them on Zillow in her town too.  It’s quite dramatic to see the transformation. They buy for $99k or less and sell for $230k or so. Lots of work, and risky, but it improves the neighborhoods.

But yes, the house that started my discussion with her sold for $200k and is now on the market refurbished beautifully for $428k. It’s in her neighborhood, very close to her.

Then tell them when they sell their house, they should sell if for what they paid for it or less, and to not accept any Capital Gains from stocks nor any other investments.  Are they Pot smokers by any chance?  lol!  :)

A mother and her daughter in Indianapolis flip older homes. They have a show "Good Bones" on HGTV.

If I said that, she’d stomp out of the room and the holiday would be ruined. Doublethink, you know. Feelz v. realz. Sadly.  :(

A recent article in the Associated Press is now getting roundly mocked for featuring an
etiquette expert who suggested that people hosting Thanksgiving provide an
actual safe space for people to discuss the current political issues.

I do long for the days when liberals were just a quaint, faintly offbeat but tolerable blip on the screen of life. Now they’re literally a threat to civilization and the Constitution.

So so true. I’m watching “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” breaking my habit of avoiding American shows. It’s not bad because it is set in 1960 in NY with people like Lenny Bruce so it’s liberal because that’s an accurate representation of the culture being depicted (Jewish New Yorkers) rather than most shows assuming everyone everywhere is liberal. So I don’t mind it. Plus it’s just a good show. Anyhow, one of the characters gets involved with some communist radicals and it goes nowhere. Interesting that those subversives then have now become embedded in the powerful ruling class in DC now.

It seems that they now control the Media, Social Media, Education, Government, Tech, and most of Corporate America.  How the fuck did that happen?  So now they have the power to be a threat to our Rights, Freedoms, and Liberties.

My wife really likes that show. I watch it occasionally, and only really because I think Rachel Brosnahan is kinda hot Lol.

She is adorable, and I really love the Susie character. The two of them are perfect contrasts. The actress that plays Susie does the voice of Lois from Family Guy. I dislike that show but think her voice work is good.

The woman who plays Susie must have a blast doing that character. She swears more than the master chief who greeted me when I stepped out of the cab at Officers Candidate School all those years ago, and that MOFO could swear!

That dude was a colorful character. He was a BMCM, spent his entire career on the decks of ships, a dangerous place to be. 6'5", about 235, and tough as anchor chain. He had contracted some bug while in the tropics rendering one half of his face paralyzed, so not only could he put more swear words into a sentence than anyone I've ever known he did so while talking out of half his mouth. When he wasn't around, we indocs used to have contests to see who could best imitate the Master Chief. That's respect right there!
