Even With a Biden Win, Portland's Protesters Vow to Keep Smashing Stuff
https://reason.com/2020/11/06/even-with-a-biden-win-portlands-protesters-vow-to-keep-smashing-stuff/

First few paragraphs for those who are link-averse:

"WHOEVER THEY VOTE FOR, WE ARE UNGOVERNABLE," reads one of the flyers for the event taking place the day after the presidential election, organized in part by the PNW Youth Liberation Front. The idea that activists in Portland, at least the kind we see breaking windows and spitting in cops' faces, are in the bag for the Democrats is a product of binary thinking. Sure, they hate the president, but anyone willing to be disabused of the notion that they prefer liberalism can check out their tweet at 11:30 p.m. on election night—"Fuck Trump, Fuck Biden, death to America! We want something better than this trash, and we're going to take it."

The first step to "taking it" begins in Portland's North Park Blocks at 2 p.m., though at start time it's not more than people in street clothes carrying stockpots of soup and cases of water out of minivans and setting up folding tables featuring flyers like, "Are You An Anarchist? (the answer may surprise you!)."

By 3:30, a guy on the mic is talking about best practices when you are arrested, especially the importance of filming every encounter with the police.

"What you're doing is you're creating a clear record that you invoked your right to remain silent and asked to see a lawyer," he says. "You're reminding the good cops to be good cops—and I say good cops carefully. That's not to say that the good cops won't try to ruin your life and your friend's life and your family's life and your children's lives, because they will, that's their job…they will follow the law when they're in the process of trying to ruin your life."

The maybe 150 people in attendance react with ennui; it's likely they've heard it before. Many of them have been in the streets at least since May 27 and while there have been more than 1,000 arrests, very few—owing to new rules by the district attorney—have stuck. That there is little fear of consequence, maybe, adds to the general lassitude.

If the crowd grows more animated when a young man named Truth explains why he voted for Biden—"With this election, I chose who I wanted to fight…I would much rather to fight a feeble-minded neoliberal than a narcissistic racist neo-fascist."—it's pretty clear politics bores them, too, but that what animates them is the fight, the release that comes with screaming in people's faces and breaking whatever is at hand.

”We conclude that the Governor lacked the authority to declare a 'state of emergency' or a 'state of disaster' under the EMA [Emergency Management Act of 1976] after April 30, 2020, on the basis of the COVID-19 pandemic," the court said. "Furthermore, we conclude that the EPGA [Emergency Powers of Governor Act of 1945] is in violation of the Constitution of our state because it purports to delegate to the executive branch the legislative powers of state government—including its plenary police powers—and to allow the exercise of such powers indefinitely. As a consequence, the EPGA cannot continue to provide a basis for the Governor to exercise emergency powers."

Spin Zone / Insight from an Antifa mole
« on: October 02, 2020, 05:17:24 PM »
For a libertarian site/magazine, Reason.com has IMHO a mixed bag of writers, some barely libertarian and a few too many with TDS, but Nancy Rommelmann strikes me as pretty good and appears to be about the only writer doing on-the-ground reporting in Portland OR of the riots (or “protests”) going on there for quite some time (at least since Feb 2019.)

In the article linked below Rommelmann interviewed a conservative trans woman (yes of course such exists) who decided to go “undercover” and become part of what the article calls the black bloc anarchists (“black” in this case describes their attire, not skin.) I found it fascinating, from an objective perspective, on confirming and sometimes adding insight into Antifa’s organization, tactics, strategies, and objectives. But also the personal motivations of those who join. Some of the insights are obvious, some not, but to beat an enemy it is said you have to know them. So for those willing to gain some insight:

Trump pops to 52%: ‘Best job approval rating on record,’ up with blacks, even Democrats

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/trump-pops-to-52-best-job-approval-rating-on-record-up-with-blacks-even-democrats

Quote
Buoyed by blacks and independent voters, as well as urban dwellers shocked by the Black Lives Matter protest violence raging in some cities, President Trump’s approval rating has hit a new high, according to a survey heavy with minority voters.

The latest Zogby Analytics poll just shared with Secrets had Trump’s approval at 52%. “The president has recorded his best job approval rating on record,” said pollster Jonathan Zogby.

What’s more, his approval rating among minorities was solid and, in the case of African Americans, shockingly high. Zogby said 36% of blacks approve of the president, as do 37% of Hispanics and 35% of Asians.

Approval among independent voters is also up, to 44%. And “intriguingly,” said Zogby, 23% of Democrats approve of Trump.

It was the latest to show that Trump’s approval went up during the Democratic National Convention. Rasmussen Reports had it at 51% at the end of the convention.

In a shock from past election years, Joe Biden got no convention poll bounce, according to a newly released Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The Republican National Convention still has two days to go. Last night's address by first lady Melania Trump won good reviews. Tonight, Vice President Mike Pence speaks, and Thursday is Trump's night.

Pollsters have been somewhat at a loss to explain the rise of Trump’s approval ratings, considering that there has been little positive news to help his standings other than the peace deal he helped negotiate between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Rasmussen Reports
@Rasmussen_Poll
Last night @donlemon called for the rioting to end, "because it's showing up in the polling."

What polling? The media polling after the DNC Convention that was never released over the weekend.

Yes, folks, it exists. You’re just not allowed to see it.

Zogby, in his analysis, took a stab at the reasoning.

First, he said, his and other polls are confirming that the nation is nearly evenly divided politically and that despite some showing a big Biden lead, the race is extremely close. He suggested that the battle is for the “10%-20%” who haven’t made their minds up on whom to vote for and who likely won’t make up their minds until Election Day, just like in 2016.

“We are as polarized a nation, on a level not seen since the Civil War,” said Zogby.

He also said that the violence playing out in cities such as Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Portland, Oregon, are pushing urban voters to Trump.

“Another factor continuing to help the president’s high approval rating is a rise in crime in our nation’s biggest cities. Unlike a year ago, the president is performing well with voters in large cities. It’s highly likely he is benefiting from the uptick in violence. His law-and-order message is resonating with urban voters at the moment,” said the analysis.

And he also suggested that Trump’s focus on issues important to blacks, including the economy, jobs, and criminal justice reform, has boosted his support among the voting group that traditionally goes all-in for Democratic presidential candidates.

“The president is also improving his job approval numbers with African Americans and millennial African Americans, which is a trend we witnessed last year. Trump has been making the case that he has done more for African American voters, by way of prison reform and previously low black unemployment, than Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, both of whom have been accused by the president for increasing incarceration among African Americans for generations on nonviolent drug charges,” said Zogby.

Spin Zone / Twitter Antisemitism and Double Standard

https://jewishjournal.com/news/worldwide/319713/twitter-official-says-ayatollah-khameneis-tweets-are-permissible-because-theyre-foreign-policy-saber-rattling/

Quote
A regional Twitter policy chief said during a July 29 hearing with the Israeli Knesset that Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s tweets are permissible on the platform because the tweets amount to “foreign policy saber-rattling.”

In a video clip that has since gone viral on social media, Israeli-Jewish Congress Executive Director Arsen Ostrovsky asked Head of Twitter Policy for the Nordics and Israel Ylwa Pettersson, “You have recently started flagging the tweets of President [Donald] Trump. Why have you not flagged the tweets of Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei, who has literally called for the genocide of Israel and the Jewish people?”

Pettersson replied: “We have an approach to our leaders that presently say that direct actions with fellow public leaders, comments on political issues of the day or foreign policy saber-rattling on military, economic issues are generally not in violation of our rules.”

Blue and White Knesset Member Michal Cotler-Wunsh then asked, “Calling for genocide on Twitter is OK but commenting on political situations in certain countries is not OK?”

Pettersson said in response that if a leader of a country issues a tweet that violates Twitter rules but it’s in the public interest to keep it on the platform, the tweet is hidden behind a notice about the violation but people can click on it to see what the tweet states.

“That is what happened for Trump’s tweet,” Pettersson said. “That tweet was violating our policies regarding the glorification of violence based on the historical context on the last line of the tweet and the risk that it could possibly inspire harm and similar actions.”

The Trump tweet Pettersson was referencing was a tweet from June stating, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

Ostrovsky tweeted a clip of the exchange, stating: “At Knesset hearing on anti-Semitism, @Twitter rep tells me they flag @realDonaldTrump because it serves ‘public conversation’, but not Iran’s @khamenei_ir call for GENOCIDE, which passes for acceptable ‘commentary on political issues of the day.’ ”

The Simon Wiesenthal Center tweeted that Pettersson’s remarks serve as a “bonanza for Jew haters.”

“Unnamed morons at @Twitter ok Holocaust-denier Khamenei’s genocidal threats against #Israel as mere saber rattling,” the Jewish group added. “200,000+ missiles target Israel’s heartland, Iranian $$$ for Hezbollah+Hamas.”

U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer similarly tweeted, “Shame on you @Twitter for turning a blind eye to the Jew-hating poison of Iranian dictator Ayatollah Khamenei. Kudos to Israeli lawmaker Michal Cotler-Wunsh & human rights lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky for exposing your double standards and coddling of anti-Semites.”

The Jerusalem Post compiled some of Khamenei’s past tweets, including a May tweet stating, “The only remedy until the removal of the Zionist regime is firm, armed resistance.” The Post also highlighted a 2014 tweet from Khamenei on how to destroy Israel in nine steps.

Spin Zone / Da plane! Da tiltwing plane!
« on: July 03, 2020, 07:09:04 PM »
About an hour ago da prez flew by in a chopper on his way to Mt Rushmore from Ellworth AFB (would have reported earlier but we were just getting ready to have dinner.) Actually it was a flight of several choppers and several tilt-wing aircraft (with their rotors tilted mostly up so they could go the same pace as the choppers.) A while later saw one of the tiltwings fly back to Ellsworth in airplane config. No doubt lots of speechifying going on by the politicos - no doubt the price the audience has to pay to get to see the fireworks.

“Facebook ad boycott campaign to go global, organizers say”

The list of demands are here:
https://www.stophateforprofit.org/productrecommendations

Stopping hate speech seems to include these actions:

“ 4. Find and remove public and private groups focused on white supremacy, militia, antisemitism, violent conspiracies, Holocaust denialism, vaccine misinformation, and climate denialism.
 ...
8. Ensure accuracy in political and voting matters by eliminating the politician exemption; removing misinformation related to voting; and prohibiting calls to violence by politicians in any format. Given the importance of political and voting matters for society, Facebook’s carving out an exception in this area is especially dangerous.”

I’ve never had an account at Facebook and never liked it or paid attention to Mark Zuckerberg. On the other hand, I admire and agree with his recent decision:

“We’re going to stand up for free expression,” he said, apparently referring to the company’s decision to resist pressure to ban political ads because it would be too tough to determine the line between true and false content.” From:

I see some interesting posts about trials and triumphs of daily living on threads that started on unrelated subjects. E.g. experiences with or philosophies on potty training the young, sex before marriage, dating, home maintenance, etc. So I’m starting this one for those who prefer to post to a thread that was intended to cover a potpourri of subjects that fall broadly under what I’d call the search for domestic tranquility.

Spin Zone / Musk is pissed with California - finally?

“Elon Musk says Tesla may leave its Palo Alto headquarters and Fremont, California factory.”

https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-to-leave-california-over-coronavirus-response-2020-5

Well, duh. For a bright guy, what took him so long to realize California sucks as a place to do business?

Ok, one of the catch-22 problems with staffing a high-tech company is finding qualified people, and California has plenty. If you are highly qualified and want to work with an up-and-coming firm, more firms of that nature are in California than most anywhere else. And a lot of deep pocket venture capitalists are there too - because they made their reputations and money back in an earlier era. They prefer to fund and nurture firms that are geographically close.

Now all these factors act as catch-22 that tend to keep many high tech companies headquartered and running in silicon valley.

A place to discuss or suggest movies.

My motivation for the thread is to have a place to highlight older more obscure films that people may wish to bring other people’s attention. Of course without moderation (three cheers for that!) no one needs to follow that motivation and can discuss newer films or even TV shows or post whatever.
