Title: Solar eclipse
Post by: invflatspin on August 07, 2017, 09:11:26 AM
Discussions, ideas, plans.

Meet-up?

I'm going to be around Topeka KS, just north. From my home this is the easiest to drive to, and provides the best potential for clear skies.

Hertz being a bunch of dickwads.

Are you going? Where? Gonna drive or fly? I might drive part way to my kids house, but we are driving from there up.

"A bunch of" young'uns isn't a thing in this forum.  :P

But I admit to not knowing the reference.

A classic, although I didn't actually care for the video portion.

The referrence is at about 3:10 into the video.

Yeah, it was originally from 1972.

My guess is this is the TE referenced by the song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_31,_1970

Heading to KCUB (Columbia SC) if the weather is good. EAA 242 is selling lunch with a pair of glasses sold out of lunch.

Thinking to take off again after totality and try to get some picture from the air of the shadow.  But I suspect we will just be too slow getting up

Have to get down to the airport in the next week and do night currency in case we are delayed coming home.

We have a relative with property right in the path of totality. Except my wife couldn't wait (for permission to stay there and the keys) so she booked us a hotel somewhere else. I don't know where and don't care, but she claims it's in also in an area of totality and high time in the 2-1/2 minute range.

It was GLORIOUS! Found a quiet spot with good sun in Russleville MO. Laid on the grass, and watched it go dark and then lilght again. Loved every minute. Can't wait for Apr 9 2024!

You must really need to be in the direct location to be impressed. I was in an area that was 86% cover and the sun remained super bright. Was not at all impressed. Maybe next time I will need to fly to go see it.

We had to drive for Atlanta to Concord, NC Monday to see our grand-daughter before she heads of to college in Costa Rica. Somewhere around the GA-SC state line we drove through the totality. It was interesting to see it get dark and the headlights come.  It is 106 miles through SC on I-85.  We hit exit 46 and Waze proceeded to take us on a tour of every back road and little town in SC. We finally rejoined I-85 at exit 104 and continued on. We ended up stopping for dinner around 7:00 pm before continuing our trip and getting to my son's house at 9:00 pm after leaving our house at 1:30 pm.

I flew up to Columbia SC and we participated in a small canoe/kayak flotilla (~20 people).  We paddled up river near the dam to a wide open spot.

It remained practically full daylight until the last tiny sliver disappeared and we saw the corona.  Then it suddenly got dark and Venus was shining brighter than I ever saw it.  No stars though.

It was a cool event, but I enjoyed the kayak trip more than the eclipse itself.
