As a member of the House, the Constitution dictates that he can only be replaced by an election. I viewed naming his son as an endorsement, not as him naming a successor.

The governor sets a date for a special election. The election is held and the winner takes over the rest of the term, in this case, a little over a year.
There might be someplace that does it different, but I believe that is the way it's done everywhere to replace a house member.
