Looks like it might finally happen.  Can't believe Obama would veto one of the few bills to hit his desk, especially an inoffensive one like this.

Excellent news. I'm guessing the AOPA will stop soliciting donations for this now.

Nah, they need funds to work on Part 23 rewrite now so we can put experimental (read cheap) stuff in our airplanes ;)

An "owner maintained" category would be handy.

I have a MS in electrical engineering. I can't swap out a balky PTT, legally.

But you can troubleshoot an electrical problem with your landing light (wink wink nudge nudge)

Nor can one replace the strobe power supply, rear nav/strobe light, boost pump switch, power trim thumb swtich......

I'm currently in kind of a funk with flying and loosing interest. I'm not ready to give up, so I have been kicking around in my head trading planes and selling the Mooney and getting a Vans RV something. I have never really like the Vans planes and they still don't really excite me, but what I do like is the lower cost of ownership, the lower cost of of operation and a greatly reduced FAA involvement. I'm thinking that maybe that combined with sporty handling and awesome visibility might get me excited again.

If they had done a part 23 rewrite that allowed me to decertify my Mooney and have the same rules I can get with a Vans, I likely wouldn't be thinking of this. The relaxed medical may help. It is yet to be seen how hard it is to get a GP to fill in those forms, or write those letters. I'm thinking many of them may want to cover their asses and decline to endorse you.

I haven't heard a word. Did the president sign the bill?

Yup.

Thank you.
Does anyone know if the online Aeromedical course available?
Was there a press release, or dancing in the taxiways when it was signed? I heard absolutely nothing about it.

Tell me about your Mooney

I believe the FAA has 180 days to flesh this out.

Well, it's not for sale at this point. I'm only kicking the idea around right now. I may do nothing.

1 year actually...

And it's not quite the clear.  Beyond the 1 year mark, the FAA cannot pursue any enforcement action against a pilot for not having a 3rd Class Medical if the FAA has not issued rules implementing the law.

I noticed you honking around for an RV9.  Not a bad choice depending on your mission.  If you really don't need the back seat (or semblance thereof) and hauling capacity, Vans are sweet.  I've flown in a couple, I really like the breed.  If Mrs. Steingar hadn't nixed the idea I'd probably have bought one instead of the Mooney.

It sounds like your biggest beef is not being able to do maintenance and repairs to a certificated aircraft.  Can't you get an A&P to back you up?  "Supervise" and sign off the logbook entries?

Care to discuss it anyway?  I'm not ready to buy right now if that's any consolation.  :D

We could get lucky in that the FAA will drag their feet and let the time pass with no action for years! This might let pilots fly with no medical requirements what so ever for third class.

Anyone have information on whether the FAA is actively complying with the Congressional requirement?

No idea, but the Exec Branch has been very busy creating other regulations:
