Title: John McCain: Particularly Aggressive Form of Brain Cancer
Post by: Number7 on July 20, 2017, 07:32:00 AM
Apparently John McCain's blood clot caused doctors to look more closely at his former cancer site and they found what is described as a "particularly aggressive type of brain cancer.'

"Subsequent tissue pathology revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the blood clot," his office said in a statement late Wednesday.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, more than 12,000 people a year are diagnosed with glioblastoma, the same type of tumor that struck McCain's close Democratic colleague in legislative battles, the late Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts. The American Cancer Society puts the five-year survival rate for patients over 55 at about 4 percent.

The senator and chairman of the Armed Services Committee had been recovering at his Arizona home. His absence forced Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to delay action on health care legislation.

In a statement on Twitter, his daughter, Meghan McCain, spoke of the shock of the news and the anxiety over what happens next. "My love for my father is boundless and like any daughter I cannot and do not wish to be in a world without him. I have faith that those days remain far away," she said.

I had a family member that had the exact same situation.  It's a very ugly way to die.   He's got about 3 months at best.

A colleague at my former employer was stricken with glioblastoma multiforme, which is what I assume McCain has. He did survive over a year with it, so there is no way to predict progression. But I agree, it's a horrible disease.

A sad day... :(

That wouldn't surprise me in the least, but at least they caught it while looking for something else, and not because he was exhibiting symptoms.  Perhaps they got it early enough.  They "claim" to have removed it all.

I hope he recovers completely, and then RETIRES FROM PUBLIC LIFE.

He's had some peculiar behavior lately which can be attributed to this.  Also, as stated, this is a very aggressive form of cancer, while they may have removed a tumor more can come back quickly.

He needs to resign from the senate and focus on family and what he has remaining of his life. Every day he has now is a gift.

Terrible. I read that average is 14 months to live with this form of cancer.

My mother survived less than six months after being diagnosed with it.
She also exhibited some odd behaviors before diagnosis but i wouldn't rush to blame the cancer for it, as I wouldn't rush to blame it on canvcer with MCCain.

I do not like the man's politics, nor demeanor, but I would not wish ill on him.  I hope he recovers, and retires.

That is sad news.  Wish him the best and a complete recovery.  From what I have read of that form of cancer, the future may not be so bright.

Curious, why didn't John McCain go to the VA for his healthcare?

Curious, why didn't John McCain go to the VA for his healthcare?

Lawmakers of both parties love to pass laws, and implement policy in which they are not bound.  However, there is no mandate for him to use the VA, as you know as he can afford the best healthcare money can buy.  A good friend of mine, a disabled Marine, has to use the VA as that is all he can afford.  He never has a good experience.  The staff is extremely indifferent, and uncaring.  It is a very sad state of affairs.

Insider trading is illegal. Except for the people who write the laws that affect regulations. How do you think so many in Congress have become fabulously wealthy while in a job that pays $170K living in DC and maintaining a home elsewhere?

Read the preambles to virtually every bill passed by congress.  They always exclude themselves from the laws they are passing.

He didn't have to
I believe the question was rhetorical.
He didn't have to go, but he didn't go because they suck.

Normally, when a surgeon removes a tumor they take lots of tissue around it.  What they dig out gets sent to a pathology lab, whose sole job is to look at the tumor and make certain that he surgeon got enough of the surrounding tissue so that no tumor cells remain, that there is a layer around the tumor free of tumor cells.  In a brain tumor this simply can't be done, since what's getting cut out is really important and won't grow back.  Hence any surgeon who says he got "the entire brain tumor" is not telling the entire truth.  I just lost a good friend to another form of brain cancer.  His surgeon told him the same thing.  Of course we both knew better.

Yes, glioblastoma is a very aggressive form of cancer, usual prognosis is less than a couple years.  McCain is in his 80's, far beyond the age of tragedy (and a black ace!), but I still wouldn't wish such a diagnosis on anyone.
