There are a lot of vacancies, including SCOTUS. And he is known to make recess appointments even when there is no recess. Maybe he will make some egregious ones to draw attention away from the coming pardons.

The 2014 SCOTUS decision in the NLRB v Noel Canning case (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLRB_v._Noel_Canning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLRB_v._Noel_Canning)) would seem to make such appointments highly improbable, given that the Republicans control the Senate and will continue that control. They aren't going into recess anytime soon.

After Hillary Conceded and Obama welcomed Trump to the White House, I'm willing to bet that he won't try to make any recess appointments. He understands that the Republicans are fully in control. While he doesn't like it, he's probably looking ahead to the 2018 midterms and realizes that making ridiculous recess appointments now, especially to the SCOTUS, won't work or do any good.

Obama being the narcissist that he is would view recess appointments as "the people would want me to do this for them".

You don't have to trust him. The SCOTUS already threw out his recess appointments to the NLRB and made it all but impossible for him to succeed in any future attempt.

I don't trust him either but I don't think he's going to make a recess appointment. I think he's more likely to grant pardons and other things instead.
