Owned by this company:  http://cannonoilandgas.com/

They haven’t released the identity of the pilot but the owner of the business is Robert D Cannon and there is a Robert D Cannon in WY in the FAA Airmen database with a MEL and IFR rating. Gotta be him. :(

That is a puzzler - isn't it? Plane just seems to be flying along and then drops out of the sky.

I would assume a Baron like that had a good autopilot. Raises my suspicion of some kind of mechanical failure - versus pilot incapacitation.

Company was in the gas well business and has been around a while. Not much about the owner or qualifications available.

It is a puzzler. He was 68 but had a third class medical just one year ago. I can’t find much about him, he’s not active on social media. He’s the head of Cannon Oil but it’s a small company also not very active on social media, and they don’t seem to be putting out any news releases.

There is this, he got into a legal dispute with his close friend and brother in law, Bruce Evertson, with whom he went into business, but this was back in 1987. I wouldn’t think it would be relevant to what happened today.

I just know how to plug the right words into a search engine to pull stuff up on the first page of results. Something about this one has me curious. Maybe because we had a Baron. Maybe because he’s a small but successful business owner, in the oil and gas industry which is my community’s business.

When I was still training at Lancaster, a Baron owned by the senior law partner in a big law firm in town had an engine failure on takeoff, did not react properly and did the Vmc rollover right into the ground.  I had to fly over that smoking hole in the ground on every flight, thinking no way I'm doing that.

There is very little info about this guy, it seems they didn’t even publish an obit. Here is his home town paper’s recent obits:

https://www.greenriverstar.com/section/obituaries

That’s where he should be I would think. Of course they could have printed it elsewhere. His business was located in nearby Rock Springs but no obits there either. You would think for the President of a company that works as much territory and for as many major companies as they do, there would be a little acknowledgment of his passing.

I was able to find out some info. He had gotten a ppp loan. One of his employees is suing the company for discrimination over disability. Big whoop. He sued some insurance company in Texas over business. I wouldn’t think any of that would be reason enough to take your plane and off yourself. He’s married to an Elaine or at least owns a house with her. Apparently owns some drilling sites in Utah.

I’m trying to find something to indicate state of mind but not coming up with anything remarkable.  I’ve narrowed the cause to four possibilities:

Mountain turbulence
Mechanical or flight control problem
Medical incapacitation
Suicide

I haven’t figured out how close he was to high terrain during the flight nor do I know anything about mountain turbulence. He got to 14,000’ wasn’t that high enough?

They finally printed something about this guy.  Seems like a very stable, happy, functional and successful guy. I’m eliminating suicide from my speculative list.
