Title: Key bridge
Post by: Rush on March 26, 2024, 05:05:02 AM
Accident or deliberate?

I say accident at this time due to apparent power issues.  I’m sure there will be lots of conspiracy theories.

For you non-Twitter people, it’s the video with notations about two power failures and recoveries but too late to correct course.

Folks on X are speculating that the ship was hacked causing the power losses.  I do not know enough to know whether that could be true or not.  Is the river current that powerful to turn that ship directly for the piling?

It did look like a power loss, and then a panic trying to turn away.  Lots of smoke showing that the engines were working hard but it just kept going at the support.  All back full but the rudder turned the wrong way?  Don't know what direction the river was flowing in, but there's a lot of inertia going there.

Be ready for some supply chain problems as that port is going to be blocked for a LONG time.

One would think on a ship like that losing electrical power should not mean a total loss of control.

Absolutely yes, at least from my experience sailing boats.

I have no idea if the power could be hacked.  I’d be surprised if it were being controlled remotely.  The ship was from Singapore so it’s theoretically possible a terrorist somehow got on board and sabotaged it but cutting power and hoping the current pushes you into the support would be a stretch. If there were someone on board why not just take over the steering and aim it directly into the target like the 9/11 hijackers?

The magenta line disappeared and they had no idea where to steer.

And does control of the rudder involve the electrical system?  “Fly by wire?”   I have no idea how those ships work other than the engines are diesel.

Somebody who seems to know what they’re talking about:

https://twitter.com/cybergibbons/status/1772564868974915633

For the non-Twitter users, just get an account. It’s free and you don’t have to ever actually post.  I’m not copying all of that info.  But the long and short of it is they do have backup generators and an emergency battery backup but the battery doesn’t move the rudder, you need the diesel generators for that and it takes time to go through the start up for those.  This is easily explainable as an accident.

Having said that, it’s only one guy’s speculation but he obviously has experience on these ships.  We need to wait for the investigation to know for sure.

Somebody posted that a closeup shows the anchors dropped, looks like a last desperate attempt to avert the collision.

Here ya go!

https://gcaptain.com/ship-lost-control-before-hitting-baltimore-bridge/

Part of the article.  I believe the part about the wind, even more so than current.

“She struck the southwest support column at a speed of 7.6 knots (8.7 MPH).

Cameras from the Vessel Traffic Service captured footage of the collision and subsequent collapse. The ship’s lights went out twice before the collision, indicating possible issues in the engine room. Despite the quick restoration of lighting, this suggests a full blackout occurred, prompting the emergency generator to restore basic electrical services and lighting.

Without propulsion or tugboats, a ship this size is nearly impossible to stop.

The emergency generator does not connect to propulsion but should support steering and navigation systems but the ships heading appears to have been pushed off course by the wind directly into the support column.

Ships are not required to have tugboat escorts when passing under the Francis Scott Key Bridge so they have limited ability to slow down on their own when they lose power and can not put the propeller into reverse.

According to past photos, she is equipped with a bow thruster. However, these are not typically connected to emergency power systems. Even if it were engaged, bow thrusters are designed for slow-speed maneuvers and have a limited ability to push the bow into the wind when the ship’s speed exceeds 5 knots.”

I saw online where a former aide already has testified that Trump grabbed the steering wheel and aimed the ship directly into the bridge.

The problem is that all the regular news sites make me watch ads before I can watch the video and have pop up ads all over the place and I realize I haven’t tried ad blockers for safari yet but I find news sites insufferable anyway, so I get all my news from either Twitter, which takes me right to the point, or content creators which also have their own ad problems.  Even my beloved Styx has massively increased his promotion of revenue partners over actual content that it’s driving me nuts.

X does have better news faster than any of the other "traditional" news sites.  Fox now sucks since you have to enter an email address to see their stories.  You do have to weed out the crap, but for breaking news X seems to be a good thing.  Then deep dives on the other sites when they get their stories up.

I would still like to know why the ship visibly turned toward the piling after the first power loss recovery.  A vessel being pushed by current or wind moves sideways and doesn't turn.

Wouldn’t the location of the CG matter?

I can’t help but think rudder issues, it does look like it rotates a bit much.

From my sailing days, once the wind hits you on the beam the boat starts turning.  If the wind was from the left and with an outbound current... the wind turns the bow right, the current moves the stern left and there you go.  It did have bow thrusters but those only work for docking at low speeds.  It tried to drop anchor but too little too late.

I heard on the radio they got some warning out and some cars were stopped before getting on the bridge.  From the video you could see cars and trucks going along but by the time it hit the support there were none that I could see. But apparently there were a few.

The ship had harbor pilots on board, and when it lost power the first time they radioed an alert, and traffic was stopped.

FJB says the federal government will pay the total cost to rebuild, and when asked if the shipping company would be held responsible he shrugged that off.

Been on that bridge a few times, and as mentioned, ain’t no train tracks there Joey! Ever notice when he speaks, er, mumbles, he has to interject his own experiences, or just tell a lie. 🙄

I've been on that bridge several times.  That is why I was amazed there were so few fatalities.  But now I read that a Mayday from the ship allowed authorities to stop traffic before the collision.

I keep hearing that all of the people killed on the bridge are "immigrants that are doing the work no one else wants to do".

Is this a euphemism for "illegal alien"?  One interview said they were "not invaders; they just want a better life".  And another said they work to send money back home to South America.

Not that I have any less sympathy for them or their families, but it sure sounds like a bunch of illegals to me.
These are the people for whom we need a more organized and efficient system for legal entry into the country where everyone that comes in is DOCUMENTED.

Appears probable all were legal immigrants given who they worked for. At least three have been in the US for years:
"Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38, moved from Santa Bárbara in Honduras to the US 18 years ago...."
"Miguel Luna was a husband and father of three from El Salvador who lived in Maryland for over 19 years...."
"Jose Mynor Lopez, 35, was originally from Guatemala. His wife, Isabel Franco, told WJZ he moved to the U.S. 19 years ago...."
