I don’t really consider such people liberals anymore. There is nothing classically liberal about such behavior.

Spin Zone / Re: TSA doubles mask fines
« on: September 18, 2021, 08:25:18 AM »
As I often point out (but it gets me accused of trolling on PoA) a peer-reviewed review of the randomized clinical trials of the effect of the general public wearing cloth masks to prevent the spread of influenza like illnesses (Jefferson et al 2020) found that of 14 such trials none, that is 0 of 14, showed a statistically significant effect. They concluded that probably such mask usage provided little to no protection.

Bundgaard et al, the large Danish study which was concluded last year also failed to find a significant effect.

So while it sure seems like they should work based on intuition and laboratory studies say they should, the randomized trials show they don’t actually help much, if at all. This is a rather common result with proposed medical treatments.

Pilot Zone / The Last Fighter Pilot of WWII with video
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:55:08 PM »
“Take five minutes to watch this magnificent talk --Listen carefully to what Captain Jerry Yellin, the pilot of the last mission of WWII, says and how he says it on his visit to Iwo Jima.

You’ll enjoy every second of it.

How many of the few surviving WWII veterans kept themselves and their uniform in such good condition for over 70 years and can still proudly wear it?

Notice his superb and articulatedelivery, no teleprompter, no script -- just a 91-year-old fighter pilot representing the greatest generation at home and abroad who won WWII.

He has some surprises and a great take on the philosophy of life.

Enjoy !”

Pilot Zone / Why are ramp checks allowed when random traffic stops are not?
« on: September 16, 2021, 07:36:10 PM »
Here is a question that was asked on PoA that could be interesting to discuss -

“This was mentioned in a reply on another thread but prompted my wonder…

Law enforcement is not constitutionally allowed to see me in a parking lot doing nothing wrong and roll up and inspect my vehicle and check my license and such…

however in my airplane they could….

Why is one considered out of bounds by the 4/5th amendment and the other isn’t?

Both driving and flying are privileges not rights, so that’s not it. Ones federal ones state regulated but I still don’t think the FBI could just do a vehicle inspection when I walk out of Walmart…

I’m just curious of what technicality allows for one but not the other…”

Spin Zone / Who owns PoA?
« on: September 16, 2021, 07:04:13 PM »
Thanks Jim. Just ordered several of the documents there. They have two PA non-profits but these have not been classified as 501(c)3 per the IRS.

From prior threads on PoA, it appears the MC may be the board of directors as well.

I tried that also. It is basically redacted for privacy. A bit puzzling for a nominally public organization, but not unusual. Strange there isn’t an official corporate address that this could be put in.

I doubt they are a formal 501 (c) 3 though I suppose it could be under a weird name.

The curious thing is that in the RoC and TOS there they keep referring to “we” but never actually define who that is.

Being banned is like having covid at your age, you will get over it.
Haha. Thanks. I’m sure of that.

But I am curious about this now. And one of my traits is tend to research on a thing until my curiosity is satisfied.

Apparently there was a discussion in 2009 with user Greebo about it over there. Does someone want to ping Greebo or ask about it openly? I would but I am banned for the week.

Charles Heberle the UA captain? Not seeing any connection online between him and PoA. I believe it was set up by a bunch of the early members and Ted ? Was a big part of it. But I am wondering now about the current corporate form, if any.

Who actually owns Pilots of America? Is there a non-profit? Or a sole proprietor?

Quick search of IRS charities does not produce anything.

I had not done that search. Well, so clearly they are not just generally banning mention of pilotspin. Bob's post must have had some other reason for deletion and then they mention that in reply while deleting his post. Or it was an error to state that by one of the MC members.

They are just mad at me presently because I asked them to provide an explanation and be objective about whether we can mention a user's full name in a post

I also got my degree in the Institute of Technology rather than the College of Liberal Arts. My freshman year was 1974. I graduated in 1992. So a tad over 4 years.  ;D

I dropped out in 1976 to make money at freelance programming the new-fangled microcomputers that were coming out. But after a few years I realized I really wanted to get the degree so finally started taking classes when I could and got it done. I’d have to go look over my old transcripts to see if I was taking any classes during the years you were likely there, but I’m currently traveling to a niece’s wedding so can’t check.

I have to wonder if we had some overlap. I was a sophomore there starting in 1979 but also get distracted by founding a local company called Steinmetz & Brown, Ltd. We did microcontrollers and custom programming. We were based in the Hubbard Building right next to KSTP up the hill from the U.
