Haha! They’re all eating salad lol!

We ate at the neighbors, not a leftist there.  Love Texas so much.  Ate at 2:00, come home feel like it’s 8 pm so stuffed want to go to sleep, look at the clock and it’s only like 3:30.  Hahaha!  Whole schedule thrown off.  So I got in bed and dozed.  Was storming too, that didn’t help.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  Today is my wife’s birthday, Thursday is Thanksgiving, and on Friday I’m heading out on a long weekend to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I don’t think I’ll be loitering here too much over the next few days, so cheers!

We're making a day trip to Concord, NC to have dinner with the rest of the family.  Breakfast at Cracker Barrel, three hour drive plus stops, time with the family then the return trip. Should be home around midnight.

Roasted a Turkey today. We’re just a few tomorrow … we will bring my Mom (96) here from her assisted living. This involves a wheelchair and walker. She fell a few weeks ago and is battling back determinedly with physical therapy. My stepson will be here too. My stepdaughter is in fact speaking to us again (we were shunned for not getting the jab) and it’s wonderful to have a relationship again. She and her husband won’t be here though. She has six months of her medical residency to go.

Holidays can be poignant and sad. We think of the people who aren’t here with us, and realize that one day we won’t be here either. We have no grandchildren, so it kind of feels like an end, not a continuum, at holidays.

Speaking of sad, our son-in-law’s father died suddenly yesterday.  He was only 73 and healthy but had surgery recently and they think he threw a blood clot. He and his wife were a very sweet couple and I feel so bad for her, and right at the holiday they have to plan a funeral.

We had steamed peel&eat shrimp and bacon wrapped scallops for appetizer.

For the main course, we had baked garlic parmesan shrimp, grilled Tuna and lobster tail along with a couple of sides like mushroom risotto.

I could really go for a good turkey sandwich today, but it didn't happen.  Instead I made  shrimp/lobster rolls.  All the leftovers are gone.

Yeah we have no steak and lobster leftovers. We are considering doing the turkey dinner thing for Christmas just for the leftovers but with just the two of us I don’t know if it’s worth the work.

A small bird would give some leftovers without making you eat leftovers for a month.  sure, it's about the same amount of work, but having leftovers is part of the fun.

An observation from our celebration yesterday. We went to our oldest son's to celebrate, our whole family was there and some visitors came by also. Earlier this year our only grad daughter came out as A-sexual. Two of her friends came by yesterday, Both female and were introduced as so and so and her girlfriend. My son's ex neighbor came over and her daughter showed up with her girl friend. I don't hold out much hope for viability of our heritage.  Oldest grand son has a long time girl friend and two youngest grand sons seem interested in females also. Time will tell.

The pie is a BIG problem. Traditionally when I cooked for the family I always made three pies. Pumpkin, mincemeat, and tart cherry.  There is no way to choose only one. We have to have all three or it won’t be right. The trouble is we are on a low carb diet and no way we can eat three pies between us. I don’t know what to do.

We have “hard sauce” on the mincemeat which is a concoction of butter, powdered sugar and brandy.  Or whiskey.   I don’t even want to think about how many carbs are in that stuff nevermind the pie.

My Mom made Mincemeat pie, which I always avoided as a kid. I believe it was some concoction of fruit and nuts for the filling.

It originally contained lard and diced beef suet.  But I think the chunks in the jar stuff nowadays are all fruit, maybe they simmer it in beef broth, I don’t know.

When we do turkey, we just buy a breast and a leg/thigh quarter.  They usually have them fresh (or perhaps freshly thawed) at Publix.

Oh no! So you're daughter had a turkey and all the fixings, probably already made the pie and then canceled the whole thing? Back in the day, I'd have had the feast anyway and made the grandson stay in his room. Am I a bad mom?

What is it about sandwiches? They’re so satisfying. During our paleo years I craved them. When you’re all the time eating just meat and vegetables from a plate, you begin to drool over the prospect of yummy things in a sandwich.

Don’t talk to me about bland, floppy “bread” substitutes made from starches or cauliflower, or “wraps” of lettuce or weird plastic-like substances. No. It has to be whole wheat or sourdough. You pick it up, and bite in, and, like that first sip of morning coffee, you instantly feel happier. When you’ve polished off your sandwich, you can go do the rest of your day’s work, in a good mood.

Sandwiches are the best. My favorite turkey sandwich also has avocado, bacon, cabbage, pepper Jack cheese, and chipotle mayo.

No, you’re wise. Recall something else about “back in the day” … at large family gatherings at least one person always had a cold or something. If it was bad enough, and they were from out of town, they just slept or rested in a back bedroom. This was common, and I remember it well. I carried plates of food to them, or broth, or whatever. We didn’t used to freak out when someone was ill. Even with the flu. It was no fun for the patient, but the whole dinner was never cancelled.

(THAT would be the sign of a bad mom)
