Title: The Future Is Bleak...

...because education is in the dumper.  Really.

Wayne State Drops Math In Favor Of  Diversity (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-06-19/wayne-state-university-drops-math-general-requirement-will-replace-it-diversity)

"A faculty committee has proposed adding a three credit hours requirement in diversity to the general education curriculum at Wayne State University. It also recommended that WSU drop its university-wide requirement in mathematics, an idea that was carried out on June 13.

“We are proposing the creation of specific ‘Diversity’ courses, with students required to take one course in this designation,” said a document from the General Education Reform Committee, which is recalibrating what the university will expect from all students who earn a degree from the state university. It released the proposal in May."

Employers will take note of this and scrutinize potential future employees who come from this school. A school that does not want to focus on core requirements, such as mathematics, is not doing their students any favors.

maths is already hard for the snowflakes.

hey, maybe that's why Wayne State is going to drop it.  Maths is too hard and the snowflakes feel uncomfortable.

Does Wayne State even offer courses in ethics or in logic?

On every level, Diversity courses are taking up valuable learning time, and not just for students.  Teachers, and administrators have to go to recurrent training so they can "teach" diversity.  It is totally ridiculous.

Personally, if I saw someone applying with a degree from Wayne State I'd want to hire them.  I'd be impressed they survived the experience.  They wanted to hire me at one point.  The day after my interview one of the faculty was shot by his own student.

Nope.  There are too many candidates from good schools that aren't screwing around with education.  If you can't deal with math then you're probably too brittle to work with large companies.

Damn.
He only got ONE of them?

You reap what you sew.

Uh, what would you hire them to do?

You do realize it is the faculty that you should be impressed with, for surviving their spoiled rotten students. So I could understand if you wanted to hire their faculty (actually, no I couldn't understand that either).  But why on earth would you want to hire a student from a school where students kill faculty?

No kidding, most of the faculty I talked to wanted out.  They really had nothing good to say about the place.  But I looked them all up and they were good scientists, I was actually quite impressed.  They must have the mother of all recruitment problems trying to get students and faculty, but they had a tight ship, at least when they tried to get me.

Of course, what none of you realize is that students are a wonderfully mixed bag just about everywhere.  There are scofflaws (thank you Bruce!) in every institution, but I can tell you from long experience that the top 10% at Wayne State are just as intelligent and motivated as the top 10% at Harvard or any other Ivy League school.  And that's the population with which I do the majority of my interactions.  And I love it.  With young people like that taking over the reigns of society I think we have no worries at all.

With how many do you interact on a routine basis?

Today?  just a few in firearm safety courses.

Do you understand that people who aren't actively teaching today still can about students?

And do you understand that standing in front of a bunch of students and lecturing isn't much "interaction"?

You act like you are the world's expert on students.  You come across as full of yourself.

All one has to do is go to www.ratemyprofessors.com and read his reviews by students.  Not positive and not flattering.

In fairness, at least in the business world, unhappy people complain far more often than happy people praise.

In business this is true, but the reviews of the students speak for themselves.

That's uncalled for, and you should be ashamed of yourself. It's one thing to have political discourse and disagreements, but at the end of the day, we are mostly pilots and part of that community.  To call out one of our regulars' professional record for a petty argument is pathetic and beneath even you, and that's pretty tough to do.

Some of us only give our full names to people on this board with whom we have some other interactions. Privacy matters. But for you to hide behind a pseudonym yet "out" people such as Jeff and Michael is low and despicable.

You are vile and pathetic.

When in a position of responsibility and power, you will find that you cannot please everyone.  Those who appreciate least complain the most.  I won't claim to be the best at what I do.  However, no student has ever been refused from my door, and no student has ever left my presence without having the issue they brought to me resolved.  I can do little more, though I will still try.  That is who I am and who I wish to be.  To me, more important than money is to be pleased with the person you see in the mirror.

That I can tell I have not been "outed".  Since I am a fairly public individual I do keep a bit of a screen on these things.  Someone could glean my identity, but not without a bit of legwork.  If I do find that someone has revealed my secret identity (what a cool thing to have!) I promise I will cease participation immediately and permanently.  if you really want gone you now know how to do it.
