Title: The Old Navy Ad Controversy
Post by: Jaybird180 on May 02, 2016, 10:00:30 AM
Have you seen their new ad?  They're taking some criticism for the ad which features what some are calling an interracial family.
http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Internet-trolls-attack-Old-Navy-s-interracial-ad-7387687.php

First of all I want to say that it's NOT an interracial family, but a blended family - and there is a difference.
CORRECTION:  This is only a blended relationship.  Notice: wedding bands not shown or specified.

What message do they intend to project?  What is this leading to?  Is this their attempt to squelch speech that previously said they catered to Whites Only? (yeah, I heard that awhile back)

You see??? You can't just develop an advertisement anymore. You HAVE to impute racism into it even if (or especially if) none is intended. It's like the MSNBC commentator looking into the lens and saying that criticizing Bernie Sanders politics is racist. The entire game is rigged so whenever it looks like the liberal will lose an argument, they cry racism and end the debate.
It's cowardly, boring, and as predictable as Hell.

Attempting to placate is a form of grave disrespect.  I'd imagine that you'd know better.

IMO people who make a big issue out of this ad have too much time on their hands and nothing serious to deal with.  This ad will in no way affect where I shop.

I don't get it. It's a print ad with an interracial family. What's the problem?

Personally, I think they were pandering.
But I honestly don't have a problem with it. If it helps to promote a positive atmosphere that is a good thing.

Is that what we're getting at here?

If it's pandering to show an interracial couple, but racist to show a white couple, perhaps an ad featuring intersex dolphins would suffice. But then, of course, we've got a problem with the shark community, who doesn't appreciate the discrimination.

There is a quote attributed to Bill Russel (hall of fame center for the Boston Celtics) that I wish I could find, but my google-fu is not up to the task.

In any case, I'll paraphrase it and apply it:  we will have made progress on "racism" (or "race relationships" or whatever term you wish to apply) when people stop looking at such pictures and thinking about the apparent races of the models (nevermind those that get all fixated on it).

This may come as a shock to you but OF COURSE Old Navy was making a statement.
Why else spend money on any form of advertising IF NOT to make some kind of statement?
Making stuff up about the statement to find something to whine about is far more detrimental to the national discussion than anything Old Navy did by (gasp) photographing a interracial family.
Maybe you need a hobby to get your mind out of the make believe evils of a world you invent to give yourself something to be outraged about.

I don't see an issue with the ad. It's only an issue because people are giving credence to what some on the internet are saying. I suppose that includes us to some extent by talking about it.

Aha! Now we get somewhere: your projection. You think I'm complaining about this?!?!!! No, folks are talking about this online and actually asking them to take it down and threatening to withhold their dollars over the ad. Talking with someone else today, she says Old Navy has taken similar risqué paths on their advertising- they LIKE to risk shareholder profits to cause an uproar. The question is: why?

I don't know about you, but I do business to make a transaction. I take the yields to make a statement. But I'm small peanuts compared to them.

Its likely the responses to the ad that are being made up by them to try to make something about nothing, yet still make a point. Ad doesnt bother me one bit, but the agenda they may have does if anyone could prove it.

That ad got national exposure WAY past what they normally spend for saturation advertising.  Believe it or not, there are still people that never heard of "Old Navy".  Now there are fewer of them.

"Racist" is nothing more than a punch line to most jokes.
