Spin Zone / perspective

In 2019, an estimated 38,800 people died in car accidents in the US (source  National Safety Council).  An estimated 4.4 million required medical attention

Medical errors likely lead to more deaths than car accidents (estimates are difficult because death certificates don't ever list medical error as the cause of death).  Few, if any, studies would put the number lower than 38,000 per year.

"Conclusion. CDC estimates that influenza was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 influenza season."  Source:  CDC

In 2010, 33,687 motor vehicle-related deaths occurred.  (Johns Hopkins)

In 2010, 33,041 unintentional poisoning deaths occurred.   (Johns Hopkins)

In 2010, 26,009 unintentional falls deaths occurred.   (Johns Hopkins)

As of 20 March, the US recorded 201 deaths due to COVID-19.  That's 201 total for the year.  (CDC)

Spin Zone / Imagine

Imagine how the DOW would have looked if the coronavirus panic occurred prior to Jan 2017.  A ~33% dive from ~19800 would have put the market at about 13300...

The current DOW doesn't look so bad from that perspective...does it?

Since we have idiots ordering gun stores to close and releasing inmates "due to the coronavirus", what other pet projects will people come up with?

Whereas people are in a panic about COVID-19, Now therefore we <insert overreaction here>

1)  Declare all incumbants unqualified to seek election (any election)

2)  Order all playgrounds and fields closed

more to follow...

Banning sale and transportation of firearms and ammo because of COVID-19?

What next, banning sale and transportation of firearms and ammo because someone has the sniffles?

Anyone want to defend banning sale and transportation of firearms and ammo during a crisis (real or imagined)?  come on, anyone?  Let's hear the justification for this...

Remember a few months ago when big medical companies (e.g., pharmaceuticals) were evil evil evil?

With the panic over COVID-19, pharmaceuticals may get an image makeover.

Unless, of course, it was the big pharmaceuticals that made this COVID-19 mess in the first place.  hmmmmmmmmmm.

is to blame man-made climate change for fueling the COVID-19 pandemic.

(or did I miss that?)

Spin Zone / Why COVID-19 is hated by the DNC and GOP

Nobody can blame the "other side" for this virus.

Spin Zone / The upside for the DNC
« on: March 11, 2020, 04:48:27 AM »
With the coronavirus "forcing" cancellation of events (such as campaign rallies), the DNC won't have the embarassment of the meager "crowds" that the hillary campaign had.

Spin Zone / NOW the illegal wants to go home...
« on: March 10, 2020, 04:59:46 AM »
An illegal that is now under arrest for "visa violations" (arrested when he tried to board an airplane) was the guy who killed four members of a Massachusetts family when his truck plowed full speed into that back of the van carrying the victims.

He kills people and now wants to go back to Brazil.

His bad luck that Florida isn't a sanctuary state.

Spin Zone / Warning..

Saw a warning sign today "Caution slippery when wet or icy"

Thank goodness that we were warned that the parking lot could be slippery when icy!

How stupid are people?

Spin Zone / and this is why...

...I don't invest in the stock market.

Looking at how stocks are doing, I'm left with one main thought:  Are people insane?

The sky is falling, the sky is falling...

edit:  ok, yes, I have a (really) small amount of my retirement in a growth fund.  With the stocks in freefall, pretty soon I won't have to make my total portfolio less volatile (how this will happen is left as an exercise for the reader).

Spin Zone / Lack of media coverage
« on: February 27, 2020, 07:05:14 AM »
There's an op-ed piece in today's Boston Herald bemoaning that media silence over attacks on GOP voters.  WRT G Timm driving his car into a Republican Tent:  "No teams of reporters were sent to uncover his dark motivations, ..."

I know one reason the media doesn't look into it, they already have internalized the hatred of anything not liberal.  They already understand it.  The media hates the GOP.

Spin Zone / economics not a liberal strong suit
« on: February 21, 2020, 06:05:42 AM »
Liberals want guarentees that any coronavirus vaccines are accessible, available (how is that different than "accessibe"?), and affordable.  (buzzword bingo anyone?)

Kind of hard to predict what it will cost until it is, ya know, actually developed.

I know, we can ship the production of the virus overseas.  Hmmmm, where do people buy really cheap crap from?  Hmmmmm.  Anyone?

Jeff Robbins started off his op-ed piece today with the headline "Romney, Vindman amount the best America can be"

I didn't read much of his piece because for fear I would OD on his lies.

It was particularly ironic that he complains about President Trump's "juvenile insults" while his piece is full of petty sniping.

I hope Jeff Robbins is a better lawyer than writer.
