Spin Zone / Keep the donkeys occupied...
« on: December 19, 2019, 12:47:37 PM »
The more energy the donkeys spend on impeachment, the less time they have to work on their usual array of nonsense (prime example is the sewerage from pressley).

Rusty & Student Pilots / Old books still useful for new students?
« on: December 19, 2019, 04:57:03 AM »
I have reference materials from the late 80's (when I finally took lessons and learned to fly).  The son of a friend is possibly interested in flying.  Some of this material would still be useful for a new student, yes?

Obviously the airspace designations have changed as well as the weather briefings/information and some avonics, but airplanes still fly the same and basic weather information is still the same, yes?

Spin Zone / More sewerage from a squad member

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/470791-ayanna-pressley-introduces-sweeping-criminal-justice-reform-resolution

"Freshman Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass) introduced a sweeping criminal justice reform resolution this week that calls for decriminalizing consensual sex work, abolishing cash bail and solitary confinement, and shrinking the overall jail and prison population among a slate of other policies."

Apparently pressley is focused on the number of people in prison rather than any consideration of those convicts having committed crimes and been, ya know, convicted.  I wonder if pressley has ever considered that many of the people in her district are victims of crimes.

she even managed to throw in violation of our constitutional rights:  "(vii) reducing gun violence by regulating manufacturers, limiting firearm production and sales, including a permanent ban on assault-type weapons, a mass gun buyback program,".  pressley apparently doesn't care about violence and can't acknowledge that people commit crimes, not devices.

Pilot Zone / gotta love the older aviation films
« on: November 27, 2019, 04:16:36 PM »
before CGI, they used actual film of real aircraft.

Don't get me wrong, films like Apollo 13 have some incredible stuff.  But nothing beats real airplanes shot on film.

I just finished watching "The Aviator" again  [edit - 1985 Christopher Reeves movie], and felt like expressing my opinion...

Spin Zone / Democrats helping the rich get richer
« on: November 27, 2019, 12:32:11 PM »
The more impeachment shi^H^Htuff spews forth from the democrats, the more stocks are rising.  Don't they realize they are helping the rich get richer?

yes, this is yet another example of correlation not being the same as causation.

Pilot Zone / The "sound barrier"
« on: November 26, 2019, 09:40:24 AM »
Everytime I watch something about the X-1 breaking the sound barrier, I want to scream at the TV about bullets and artillery shells traveling at speeds in excess of 2-3x the speed of sound.   arrrggghhhhh

Back in the day before the X-1 flew faster than mach 1, people were talking about the barrier all the while other people were routinely computing ballistic tables for supersonic artillery and bullets.

Spin Zone / Brookline - home of the idiots
« on: November 22, 2019, 06:13:26 AM »
Brookline Massachusetts is the first MA city/town to ban natural gas and oil in new buildings.  The ban requires new buildings and major rehabs to go all electric.

"In the end, this moves us away from a future that is reliant on fossil fuels"

It is left as an exercise for the reader to list at least a couple of a fallacies with this ban...

Spin Zone / well, I wasn't expect that...
« on: November 22, 2019, 06:08:55 AM »
AP is reporting that the California state Supreme Court has ruled 7-0 that Donald Trump doesn't have to release his tax returns.

Of course, AP couldn't resist sniping at President Trump (ignoring the fact that releasing tax returns is a relatively recent development)

Spin Zone / negotiations vs compromise vs quid pro quo vs give-and-take

What's the bottomline difference between these terms, especially wrt relationships between countries?

Spin Zone / The ultimate echo chamber
« on: November 20, 2019, 05:49:04 AM »
For all the whining some do about echo chambers, I question whether they recognize the ultimate echo chamber:

Colleges and universities.

Consider how quickly colleges and universities cancel appearances by conservative speakers, censure conservative student newspapers, etc.

Spin Zone / how low has Canada gone...
« on: November 12, 2019, 06:16:29 AM »
Don Cherry has been fired for "divisive" remarks, calling immigrants "you people" (oh the horror) and berating immigrants for not honoring Canadian veterns.

The NHL and Rogers Sportsnet can pound sand.

Spin Zone / newspeak continues...
« on: November 07, 2019, 02:40:58 PM »
I read an opinion piece yesterday that claimed patriotism is ok, but nationalism is hateful.

<sigh>

And, of course, the piece continued with the claim was that Donald Trump rode a message of nationlism to the white house.  In other words, President Trump and all those that voted for him were hateful.

Spin Zone / Warren Plan right medicine for health care costs
« on: November 06, 2019, 06:04:20 AM »
yup - that was the headline of an opinion piece in the Boston Herald today (Wednesday).

The writer is Joyce Ferriabough Bolling, someone who bleed liberal liberal liberal all the time.

She laments about the cost of eye drops, she cries about the cost of prescription medicine, she decries "big pharma" getting sky-high profits, she complains that a company has the audicity to discontinue production of a cancer drug (calling it "unconscionable" - I guess she'd be ok with forcing the company to continue production)

Not once does she consider how much it costs to develop and produce medicine.  Not   one   single   time.

Not once

Spin Zone / Rent Control
« on: October 30, 2019, 07:19:25 AM »
Calls for Rent Control are happening in Massachusetts (in 1994 we barred rent control via a state referendum).

I'm wondering if people understand what housing costs (property taxes, cost-of-money, building maintenance, etc).

Does California have rent control?  What about other areas with extremely high housing costs?
