Title: Heading to OSH - who’s with me?
Post by: nddons on July 19, 2018, 08:09:40 AM
I’m heading up to OSH this afternoon to work Flightline Ops starting tomorrow. I’ll come back down this weekend to fly this Fairchild PT-26 up to Warbirds. I’ll be checked out from politics, but keep up the good fight.

If anyone is going, check in here.

This is when I did a practice run of the Fisk Approach two weeks ago. I parked next to the Flightline Ops shack.

My husband and his EAA friend took off for OSH this morning, from KRLD, plan to arrive Saturday morning. So my thoughts will be there!

Can’t even imagine how you guys could meet up in that crowd!

Strangely enough, I will be in KOSH next Fri-Sun(27-29). I wasn't planning to attend but I'm delivering a Porsche to Milwaukee on Wed, so I'm only a few miles away. I don't have a place to stay, so I'll be crashing in the back of my truck somewhere I guess.

Someone who is very conversant with the place should pick a time, place, and means of id for us to gather. I would prefer Friday night after airshow, and I would prefer somewhere that serves frosty, malted beverages. I'm not a very social person, but I guess I could put on a good face for a couple hours anyway. lolz...  ;)

Beautiful photo.  My daughter and SIL are planning their anniversary there. Can you recommend a resort?

Beautiful photo.  My daughter and SIL are planning their anniversary there. Can you recommend a resort?

We used VRBO and found a rental townhome with pool access and dockage for the boat. We were focused on rental homes so I don't have a good resort recommendation. However I did post on a thread in the Key West Boat Forums that had some resort recs. They may be focused on places that have space for a boat.

I was 'almost' going to OSH this year, gagle of my friends from KSEE are either there, enroute, or leaving in a couple days but stoopid day job interfered again with delivery and recovery schedules for two of my major programs.

Could have gone out with a friend in his awesome Falco (I REAALLLLYYY like the Falco, best handling homebuilt and among best handling planes of any kind I have ever flown) as well as a friend who leaves next week in his sure to win awards Navion - but alas, responsibility reaered its' ugly head.

Maybe next year.

I am enjoying the VLOG's from guys like Trent Palmer and may try and take the Yak sometime - only 9-10 stops to get there from SoCal.

Everyone going blue skies and following winds, be safe and have a great time!

Yikes, KSEE > KOSH in a Navion at 110kts shows ~14 hours one way. Gulp. Love the Navion, but it is not a fast plane.

This Navion has an IO-550R in it, with a 4-bladed prop, and outran a big motor T-34, but still a lot of gas and 2 days enroute.  I'll see if I have any pics.

I know the plane. It's been near me a couple times. Much faster than the E-225 slug with updraft cooling. But it really sucks gas as I recall. There's another big engine Navion up in NE I was shopping once. But the price to get into it, and the price to feed it were a bit off-putting.

Apparently the weather around OSH is very bad right now. My husband is in Mankato hoping it improves for his flight to OSH tomorrow.  He had great weather all through ID, MT and SD.

It is. I’ve been working Flightline Ops yesterday and two shifts today and it was
S L O W. Hardly any warbirds it GA aircraft here, and the GA came in before this low pressure system decided to swirl over Wisconsin.

It looks like MVFR all the way through about Sunday afternoon.

Here’s a pic of a dissipating funnel immediately northeast of the field. It was created over Lake Winnebago and Spin itself out.  We were standing at the intersections of taxiway Alpha, 36R, and 13/31.

Bad crash trying to get there. NO fatalities so far, one serious burn. Pretty ambitious for a C-47.

My husband plans to leave Thursday. If he stays later I’ll ask him if you can use their space!

I do not know why those ATC people can’t issue a queue pattern or something! Like, using tail numbers...it would sort groups into manageable sizes for landing within designated time windows. >:(

Thanks, I don't need a whole space, I'm driving this time, but just want to put a tent under someone's wing for a night so I don't have to drive 50 miles to a hotel.

There is a very well defined approach procedure that actually works very well. Each pilot has to read and follow the approach, and sequence in at certain points along a corridor. It's been working for > 20 years, with very few problems. Clearing weather on Monday, it looks like he'll get in. Guessing it will be very busy arrival.

I saw the video on this - I suspect loading+DA maybe?  Compared to other video I've seen of C-47s taking off, it took forever before the tail started to come up and it actually never really did.  Then they started fishtailing, lost directional control, dipped a wing into the dirt and it was done.  Sad to lose a historic plane.

I meant SHARE their space. Because of their late arrival, I suspect they may stay over Friday. Unless they’re overloaded with GA and want to get out of there.  :)

Sat is the big day and night airshow. I rarely go for the early part of the week unless I"m attending a learning session. Friday and Sat are the two big days, with a final airshow Sun. Leaving on Friday is like getting married and then skipping the honeymoon night. Weird...

Well, Mr. Intolerant, if a differing viewpoint on OSH attendance triggers you to use the W word about my husband and his flying buddy, you can just pitch your tent behind the latrines and next to the dumpsters, then, for all I care.

Ok that's a plan too. Weird is not directed at your husband, but his action to leave before the biggest days of the whole event. If one were to look at the schedule, one would see that Sat and Sun are the two Big Days for airshows, and the greatest attendance by far.

My apology if it upset you.

Why would one have to follow the crowd?

Perhaps not everyone is into air shows or huge crowds and goes there for other reasons.

One is not required(have to) follow any crowd. One can do anything one wants. One can travel thousands of miles by small plane, get stuck in bad weather, spend ginormous amounts of money and  spend 5 days at the biggest aviation event in the world, then leave when the best part of the event is staged. It's a semi-free country.

One who leaves on Friday surely will have no problem with departure traffic. No problem aye-tall.

Air shows can be the most monotonous things ever.  How many times do you watch an aerobatic plane go up and do the same routine, just different variations on it?

Every once in a great while you may catch a routine or act that is worth watching, but to have to sit there for hours enduring the same old crap over and over?   No thanks.
Title: Re: Heading to OSH - who’s with me?
Post by: invflatspin on July 23, 2018, 05:29:44 PM
Which is why I show up on Friday and leave Sun.

As an ex-competitive aerobatic pilot, maybe I have a different take on what's monotonous.

And there's that 'have to sit there for hours' PA behavior again. Just like a 17 YO exaggerating their boredom.

I would probably leave BECAUSE of the inflated attendance.  I don't like huge crowds and long lines.

I can thoroughly understand why you like it.  I just don't understand why you don't understand that someone else may not like it as much as you.

Already said it. One can come and go anytime one wants. But - I guess you skipped that post to make your point. I'm a big fan of being a contrarian(as some can tell). It's fine with me if someone goes to the biggest airventure in the world, with the biggest airshows on the planet and leaves before the main events. But - if not weird, I guess, unusual? People are flocking in, one is flocking out? Well - alrighty then. Semi-free country and all that.

Obliviously, you didn't get his point, so maybe it helps to break it down to just the relevant text, to improve the potential for reading comprehension.  My takeaway is that he regularly attends air shows and is very aware of what they're about.  Also that you, like most people, are very ill equipped to definitively state what is in other people's minds.

;D Garmin Inreach tells me differently. I could even see them stuck on the OSH taxiway.  And the track westward went a lot slower than the track eastward.

But I agree with your last sentence.  :-*

Not really. It just depends on the day, and what you’re interested in. If you want “modern” acro like Patty Wagstaff, et al, have at it. They have that every day. Not my thing.

If you like Warbirds, the beginning of the week is the best time. They put up 41 T-6s to celebrate North American Aviation’s 80th anniversary of the T-6, and there were 81 T-6s on the field.  Warbirds also flew on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. However, on Saturday they could only summon 6 T-6s. The reason is that each major group usually have their own formation clinics the 4-5 days before the show at remote airports such as Dubuque for T-6s, so by the end of the week those guys need to start heading home.

Don't know how yet but I'm going to OSH '19, maybe not in the Yak, but I'm going, been too long.
