Spin Zone / Joe and the what?

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-bubble-photographer-offensive-kamala-harris-joe-biden-meme-182540581.html

"A photographer working in the NBA bubble at Disney World was let go by the league after he posted an offensive meme about Kamala Harris, the newly announced Democratic candidate for vice president."

I wonder how many vulgar memes about President Trump have been posted by other people working with the NBA.  I'm sure those people have also been disciplined.

A democrat (Boston mayor walsh) and President Trump agree on something (Walsh called it "a disgrace" that a Mass Bail Fund group bailed out a convicted rapist that is now accused of committing yet another rape)

Spin Zone / maths is hard
« on: August 11, 2020, 10:30:07 AM »
a reporter asked gov baker about how they determine a positive case rate per 100,000 for a community with 20000 residents.

oh my god.

I know reporters are dumber than a box of rocks, but that question just highlights a stunning stupidity.

Spin Zone / Revised CDC planning scenarios
« on: August 09, 2020, 06:21:54 PM »

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/planning-scenarios.html

ok, the page is a month old.... yeah, I forgot to check the page until today.

Notable changes are:

replacing symptomatic fatality rate with Infection Fatality Rate and, in effect, increasing the "best estimate" scenario overall infection fatality rate to 0.65%.  The previous "best estimate" was 0.4% overall symtomatic fatality rate.

increasing the "Percent of infections that are asymptomatic" from 35% to 40% (again, for the "best estimate" scenario)

These would combine to make the symptomatic fatality rate more like 1%...assuming I did the math correctly, but public math can always be risky (interestingly, that is approximately consistent with the outcome for at least one cruise ship - IIRC).

also interesting was the decrease of the "Infectiousness of asymptomatic individuals relative to symptomatic" from 100% to 75% (again, for the "best estimate" scenario)

And, of course, note that the page has a disclaimer kind of buried: "...They are not predictions or estimates of the expected impact of COVID-19."

Spin Zone / Underlying medical conditions
« on: August 09, 2020, 05:07:36 AM »
We keep hearing about COVID-19 being especially dangerous for people with underlying medical conditions.

But, what is included in "underlying medical conditions"?

I finally came across a study that defined "underlying medical conditions", at least with respect to that particular study.

Look over the list (below) and see if you can think of anything not included.  Also consider how many people 50 and up who don't have at least one of these conditions.

And consider how many people in a long term care facility don't have an "underlying medical condition"

* Underlying medical conditions include

cardiovascular disease (congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, cerebrovascular accident/stroke, valvular heart disease, conduction disorders or dysrhythmias, other cardiovascular disease);

diabetes mellitus;

chronic lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/emphysema, asthma, tuberculosis, other chronic lung diseases);

immunosuppression (cancer, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, identified as being immunosuppressed);

chronic kidney disease (chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, other kidney diseases);

neurologic conditions (dementia, seizure disorder, other neurologic conditions);

chronic liver disease (cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis, chronic liver disease, end-stage liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, other chronic liver diseases);

obesity (body mass index ≥30 kg/m2).

Spin Zone / PANIC PANIC PANIC
« on: August 07, 2020, 10:51:04 AM »
Maskachusetts is panicking because of "upticks" in the number of cases and rate of positives.

The 7 day average of positive tests is now up to 2.2%.  PANIC.

We are being punished for being successful.  Originally the goal was a positive test rate of less than 5%.

The covid-19-related deaths reported for 6 August was all the way up to 32.

All of the increase relative to previous days was patients in long term care facilities.

But the blather from Maskachusetts is about restrictions on people outside of long term care facilities.  NOTHING about protecting patients in long term facilitites.

PANIC PANIC PANIC

Spin Zone / all the panic over rising cases...
« on: August 06, 2020, 01:33:17 PM »
in Maskachusetts there is a lot of hand-wringing over "spikes" in deaths and cases (parties, cruise boats, protests, etc).

But if you look into the data, the daily death count in Maskachusetts is being driven by the number of covid-19-related deaths in long term care facilities.  The daily deaths not in LTC facilities has been below 10 each day for the past month.

But, no one will report on that... except maybe to gasp in horror that elderly people are dying.  I know it sounds cold, but in a typical year in Maskachusetts, almost 90% of those who die (from all causes) are 55 or older.

Spin Zone / idle thought
« on: August 04, 2020, 12:07:32 PM »
apropos of nothing... as I'm driving on a highway this morning I wondered about the carbon footprint of the electronic billboard.

Wouldn't there be a significant amount of electricity used by these giant electronic billboards?  Wouldn't it be more environmentally friendly to use the "old fashioned" billboards?

as I said, an idle thought....

Spin Zone / let's put a 5 cent deposit on disposable masks
« on: July 31, 2020, 04:29:50 AM »
Around where I live there are a lot of disposable masks just lying on the ground... almost worse than cans and plastic bottles.

Let's put a 5 cent deposit on disposable masks and use the inevitable "revenue" to pay for cleaning up all the rubbish left by the people who can't be bothered to properly dispose of, well, everything.

(imagine, if you will, green font...)

Spin Zone / Party boats - pahty`
« on: July 28, 2020, 07:50:33 AM »
in today's Boston Herald:

"A Boston cruise company has been issued aa cease-and-desist order by city and state officials after photo of maskless revelers crowding the boat's deck when viral on Saturday night."

"maskless"  HOW HORRIBLE

There's a quote in the article "This weekend's mass gathering on a boat in the harbor represents a serious threat to public health..."

oh, btw, the article does mention (at the end) that the boat was only at 33% capacity - fewer passengers than allowed under current state guidelines.

Spin Zone / Maskachusetts - travel quarantines
« on: July 24, 2020, 09:28:28 AM »
https://www.mass.gov/governor-updates

Effective 1 August, everyone (including resident) traveling to Maskachusetts are now required to fill a Masschusetts Travel Form.  This form will be used to ensure that people are quarantining.

Effective 1 August, everyone (including residents) traveling/returning to Maskachusetts that claims to have a negative test result in lieu of quaranting must produce certification of the test result if requested.

there's more to it, but the executive order has not yet been published (it was just announced less than an hour ago)

[edit:  I get the feeling that Maskachusetts is getting like the people who have been cowering at home...]

Monica Cannon-Grant, an activist and a supporter of Ayanna Pressley (one of the infamous squad of four) put out a video that was filled with vile racist spew about Rayla Campbell.

Rayla Campbell is a black republican running against Pressley.

Imagine the national attention if a white person posted something similar about a black democrat running against a white congresscritter.
