I understand why he did it. Once I realized it, I just "Marked all Read". I use the forum by selecting "New Unread Posts, so they don't show up if marked read.
Plus it may keep douchebags like Steingar from reveling in us getting Spam'd.

If Jason doesn't come back and fix this, is there anyone else who knows how to set up a forum? This forum is Simple Machines and I think free. You just need server space and some basic programming skill I gather. We would just need to set it up with a name and not let our "friend" here know what it is which might involve some stealth amongst us.
Another forum member reached out to the Administrator, I assume Jason, but I don't think has heard back yet. Is Jason still active on POA? If so, maybe someone can PM him there to stop the spammers here.

The Malware is not allowing anyone that has the ability to delete the spam posts to do so. All we can do at this point is modify the content one post at a time. The administrator is working on fixing the problem.

While it may not be needed, I’ve set up a forum using Burning Board software - pretty nice software. The board I set up is http://sci-nanotech.com/ (http://sci-nanotech.com/) and is currently moribund because I never figured a way to actively promote it on the likely haunts where its audience might exist. I’d be more than happy to do the technical work and hosting to set up an alternate to this board and let others handle any needed moderation.

No problem - though I was thinking more along the lines of creating a dedicated domain like pilot-spin.com or pilotspin.net or something else, rather than a subforum on the sci-nanotech.com forum. The more interesting question to me is whether people think the forum software at sci-nanotech.com looks good enough (assuming my offer will be needed.)
I get email alerts on new members, so I saw your registration and that of Rush’s. I have the option of approving registrations if that becomes needed. Right now I just require a valid email where a confirmation is sent that has to be replied to. I’d be happy to saddle co-conspirators with admin/moderation duties if a new forum is desired. That way if I fly into IMC and kill myself the forum survives me and spammers get what they deserve.

Intriguing. Since sci-nanotech.com is publicly visible I’ll be deleting the thread there on the assumption it was your trial run of the forum software. You can always post that intro again elsewhere. I did start reading that “Second Chance” series over on storiesonline.net - also intriguing, but I probably wont read further mostly because I don’t read much fiction these day.

I'm not leaving either, but the spammers are sure making things difficult.
I wonder if there's a lesson for the country here. We had a very good thing going. Self-policing, everyone was mostly polite, some very good discussions, even some decent diversity of opinion. Then we got flooded with people who are here illegally and are extracting a tax (attention, marking their posts read, etc.) from the citizens. We can't (currently) do anything about them. Until they can be deported the only thing we can do is leave them to it and start another country.

Assuming the spammer(s) continue to haunt this forum and the tech admin doesn't respond soon, I note that the following domain names are currently available and I could set up a new forum using one of these (there are other top-level domains besides .net, .org, etc. that didn't seem remotely relevant):

OK then - I just spent about 0.25 flying hour-equivalents (local C-172 rental wet rate) for the first year rights to the pilotspin.zone domain. Bought via hover.com - I already have 5 domains registered with godaddy.com and previously just 1 with hover.com. Godaddy.com had a cheap first-year registration cost but more expensive cost after that. Also, don’t trust GoDaddy.com for some domain registrations.
If it turns out this forum can be cleaned up I’ll set the DNS record to point to the same host as pilotspin.com. In the meantime it’s been several years since I set up that other forum and I need to dig into that aspect. Plenty of spare resources on the machine that hosts sci-nanotech.com so zero extra hosting cost to host a second web forum.

Based on the continued spam, I presume no one has yet been able to make contact with the system admin?
I've got http://pilotspin.zone/ pointing to my host machine, but all it will show till I install the forum software is the output of a script that verifies I have all the components that software needs.
Interestingly, WoltLab's forum installer includes a tool to allow forum operators to migrate to their software from several competing popular forum software, including Simple Machines 2.x. Of course if we had an admin who could supply access to the current database we'd also presumably have someone who could do something about the spammer(s).
