Title: Unions and "overtime"
Post by: President-Elect Bob Noel on January 05, 2016, 06:44:15 AM
In the Boston-area news today is a story about the sweet sweet SWEET deal the union has with the MBTA.

A maintenance worker, whose salary is about $85,000,  made $315,000 last year by working 2648 hours of overtime, (not 2000 straight hours and 648 OT, but 2648 hours of OT!)

It goes like this, a union worker calls in sick one day and later in the week works "overtime" at the OT rate even though he doesn't even work 40 hours for the week.  In other words, the union worker doesn't have to work 40 hours in the week before he can get OT pay.

The MBTA is a part of the Taxachusetts state government and thus funded by taxpayers.

In the meantime, 1" of snow last week caused a few of the MBTA buses to get stuck - real prepared for winter .... but make sure the union is pampered.

That is the joy of Public Sector unions. Similar stories were discovered with Wisconsin correctional officers. A Prison guard calls in sick for his shift, is miraculously feeling better and works the next shift, and gets paid for 16 hours with the second shift being at overtime rates.

And Scott Walker was the devil for restricting public sector unions.

Yep the state government unions are the worst. Here in California they are full of corruption like that. They make the UAW look like Boy Scouts.

In all fairness, the vast majority of state union workers are honest, do what they are supposed to, don't engage in these rackets, work an honest day and pay their dues. They are great jobs if you can get them and I don't blame the guys that work for them one bit for taking union jobs. The problem is with management, oversight and the culture of "us against the rich man". Everyone that engages in corruption like this justifies it to themselves by saying- "I'm not doing anything worse than those rich fat cats do to us that run this place!"

Keeping the unions in check is very wise. Otherwise we end up like France where the railway workers can call a strike, bring the country to a halt, disrupt everybody's lives and get whatever the hell they want.

It's called "theft." Just because everyone else does it, it does not make it acceptable.

Elected officials who condone, or worse- promote, this should be run out of town on a rail.

The union bosses should go to jail right along with the thieving SOB that pulled this stunt.  This is grand theft, and the union bosses put a system in place to defraud the taxpayers.  A trial before the hanging could be optional, if necessary.

Agreed. There should be accountability. If they are involved, management should go to jail. If they are just incompetent and clueless as to what's going on around them, they should lose their job and union membership. Sadly, this is not how the world works.

Absolutely, yet people still put up with public sector unions that are essentially paid by the taxpayer to BARGAIN AGAINST THEM.
