With so many "participated" threads that have disappeared, I feel little need to participate. How sad.
Thanks to Jason for pulling Pilot Spin together, and welcome POA refugees.
-
Ditto.
I'm actively holding back a bit from posting there.
Just don't care for how the whole thing was treated.
-
don't worry. Folks like Jose C won't be able to resist making political posts.

It will be fun to watch how the loudmouths infect the regular board sections.
-
so, you guys have't figured out that PilotSpin is not only boring, but so few people post here that's not even interesting anymore. i'll be sticking with PoA, but, by all means, feel free to whine.

Spoken like a good liberal, progressive. Where you one of the oh so offended libs that complained to get SZ closed"

Not interested in presenting your positions and needing to defend them?
-
The sad part is that POA was created when the AOPA board was pulled, and then when it came back only aviation topics were allowed. The intent of POA was to allow non-aviation topics for pilots to discuss, including POLITICS. Thus POA has gone against its original purpose due to caving to a few liberals that complained. I will continue to post on POA because I have so many friends there, but it won't be the same.
-
I'm newer to POA and was never on the AOPA boards but I enjoyed the Spin Zone. I did not post much but enjoyed seeing others opinions on a range of topics. I'm glad this site is here now that the SZ is shut down. I found POA through google searches on aviation questions and enjoyed most of the content and discussions there. I'm curious to see how much SZ content will have to be moderated now in the regular forums.

See ya. You should be protected from having hurt feelings or hearing ideas that didn't come from HuffPo over there. Enjoy.

That's a good point. Liberal/Progressives don't like to have their ideas and views challenged because ultimately they can not defend them so resort to emotion and name calling. Their "hurt feelings" caused POA to close SZ.

maybe some of the libs/progs should host their own Safe Zone site where not a disparaging word is heard.

It's even worse than that, though. Look at how the liberal progressives seek to shut up, shout down, and physically disrupt opposing voices. It's NOT ENOUGH just to turn off Rush, not attend an Ann Coulter or Michael Savage speech on a college campus, switch the channel from Fox or The Blaze, or not go into the Spin Zone. They seek to SHUT THEM ALL DOWN.
And in the case of POA, the liberal/progressives have succeeded. Cowardly fucking pussies.

I have no animosity towards the POA MC. They are all volunteers so just want to minimize the blow back. Also, I guess they want to keep POA non-controversial, and just an aviation resource. I'm just guessing though as I have had no discussions with any of the MC members about SZ, and do not really want to. It is what it is, and while disappointing, I think Pilotspin will eclipse POA at some point, but who knows.

LOL! Yes, tell us Stan. ;D

He, you got me. And to be clear, I wasn't talking about the POA MC members, though I am disappointed in them. I was talking about the turds that cost us the SZ, such as (cough)(Captain)(cough) and the drive by-type like in post #5.

I just made the jump; getting the lay of the land. I always liked POA and can't understand their crazy attitude. Hope this site lives long and prospers.

Great to see more people coming here! Cool.

Rest assured, the dyke moderator had her feelings hurt and that was that.

Well the evidence of my prediction has been erased along with several hundred thousand other posts but this is playing out as I said it would when I bailed on POA months ago.
Seen it before in other sites. The few complainers who pushed for the silencing of opposition will be emboldened and as a result will overplay their hand (they can't help but do it) and it will get even worse.
Political posts and the resulting personality conflicts (real and imagined) will spill over into the 'approved' topic sections, complaints will go up, more heavy-handed and poorly or unexplained moderation will be required, more people will be offended and leave the site altogether, post count will drop and it will wither on the vine.
Too bad, but in this age of the tyranny of the minority where the perpetually offended and professional complainer have the heckler's veto nothing else should be expected.

Their decision to squash the SZ didn't run me off. I just decided I could use one less management council in my life.
I hope the place turns into the "what plane should I buy" utopia they're looking for.

I run a site for car enthusiast with 20 times the activity and pilots are mild compared to 19 year old car tuning nuts with daddy's centurion card. This is the 3rd time our car site has moved due to rebellion. You're spot on.

Every morning I check in on about a half dozen sites, like I'm doing right now.
There was almost always something on POA worth responding to, even if it was only the "Religion is evil" thread.
Just went there and scrolled down and virtually none of the threads merits a response from me this morning - which virtually never happened before.
I suspect "boring" is a good description, along with "repetitive".

I found the same when view the list of threads this morning.... the dumbest was "The next word that comes to mind..." thread. How freaking bored would someone need to be to participate in that mind-numbing exercise???

Great to be here Stan! Life has been very busy lately, but it's great to see the old gang has found a new home away from the fascist hypocrisy that is now POA. What is sad is they don't even recognize what they have become....

As an aside, I got very good information and support there when Jake had his oral cancer, from a vet and someone closely associated with one. Followed their advice and Jake is now over 500 days post surgery without a recurrence. Yay!
Similarly, I got good info on a wiring debacle in my garage. The knowledge base there runs pretty deep once you get past Henning and his ilk, who know far less than they pretend to.
I am about to make another query about an electrical question there. I guess my point is I will still use POA for my own ends - just be far more circumspect about when I post.

Congrats on Jake, Eddie! I don't know about oral cancer, but most cancers in dogs have a poor prognosis. It looks like you've beaten the odds, and I'm so happy for you!

I have not actively participated at POA since I bailed in October or whenever but stopped by yesterday and noticed what I think is new language on anonymous postings for the medical and regulation sections - basically only 'allowed' if posting/asking about yourself/on your own behalf. I don't recall that being there before and am too lazy to check the internet wayback machine (IWBM might be able to get to old Spin Zone posts by the way but not sure).
Give a fascist an inch..... ::)

I left the red board for the blue board when aopa become rediculous with their heavy handed moderation. Although I hardly posted in the SZ, I viewed it everyday as a good way to keep up with opinions, etc. Met some nice people over there, made some good business contacts, but the whiners just killed it for me. Finally made it here and I am happy to see familiar faces.

One of the funniest things about heavy handed liberals, is how carefully they pretend that they aren't isolating those that refuse to drink their kool-aid. POA is just the latest of the conversation boards that got taken over by a small, big mouthed, bunch of pansy - professional, offense takers.
Somehow everyone is supposed to care what the dyke on POA thinks about everything and anything, and when you challenge her facts, or conclusions, things get ugly.
Too bad. Some good folks had a cool place to congregate, but the pansies took over and ruined it like everything else they touch.
-
I am beginning to think you are correct FC. Pretty sad.
-
As much as I hate to be a "me too," person, I think the new normal is for small minded, weak people to make up for their small an weakness, by demanding everyone else cater to their made up offenses.
It is really nothing but self congratulation.
-
I love the thread now proposing to ban anyone who voices a FAR interpretation that is "wrong"
Give censorious asshats an inch, and they'll take a lightyear.

I think the Mods really messed up. Might stop going there myself, not out of spite or anything, its just starting to get a bit old.
Reminds me of when I my old man had a drug store. His was one of the last ones in town, or anywhere, with a soda fountain. The soda fountain didn't make any money at all and was a bit of a hassle, but when it was closed the store was just dead.

That's a great analogy Michael. I guess SZ was like POA's "Soda Fountain". :(

that brings back some memories... working at my Dad's shop, taking a break, having a soda across the street. I was cheap labor back in those days.

I kind of feel the same way. It just seems stale, though I did see 6PC say that he came over here and he saw many of us saying real nasty stuff about certain people over on POA. So either he's delusional, or I'd like to know what I've missed.
It reminds me of Cpl. Peacock in my favorite war movie, The Devil's Brigade:
Maj. Alan Crown: [after the Canadians finished singing a mocking version of 'Yankee Doodle'] Corporal Peacock, your stripes are not a licence to behave like an ass. There will be no more insulting or derogatory remarks about the Yanks, is that clear?
Cpl. Wilfrid Peacock: Yes, sir.

I don't understand why he would have come over here at all.
-
I don't understand why he would have come over here at all.
Probably curiosity. About who was here, and what we were saying.
He probably clicked on FC's posts and took that as characteristic of all of us, when the reality is, we don't censor anyone even though we may not subscribe to their views. IOW we are tolerant of diversity. Unlike POA, apparently.
-
I don't understand why he would have come over here at all.
Well, censorious asshats need to have something to bitch about.
Take the old SZ for instance. It was opt in, so nobody who didn't want to be there could see it, but. of course, those who demand control over others had to poke their noses in, then stick their noses high up in the air to decry the villainy that they intentionally exposed themselves to.
Just wait...expect an organized effort from the same censorious asshats to go after the host of PS to get it taken down.
-
I don't think so. The asshat in question is on a quest to get himself on the MC at PoA, hence the bromances he keeps perpetuating with certain members.
That guy is easy to see through.
-

Same reason he stuck his nose in on the SZ.
Of course, I don't know what that reason is, but he feels a need to check up on others (in a closed forum) so that he can make sure they all post serious aviation issues. But then again, it is ok for him to talk about Penises in an open forum.

Perhaps it's simpler than that: Curiosity and interest if there was any content worth reading or participating in. I really never participated in SZ, but enjoyed the read. That's what brought me to read over here, too.

Perhaps you are right, and perhaps I overstated his reasons.
But I don't remember you getting on your high horse after the decision was made and proclaiming how right the POA MC was for disbanding it and how it was our fault and how we shouldn't be allowed to continue on uncensored like we were and that it was good that we were going away.
Yet he contributed very little. His "comedy" was boring and childish, or obscene, and his aviation content revolved around "Daddy's plane".
-
I don't understand why he would have come over here at all.
Same reason he stuck his nose in on the SZ.
Of course, I don't know what that reason is, but he feels a need to check up on others (in a closed forum) so that he can make sure they all post serious aviation issues. But then again, it is ok for him to talk about Penises in an open forum.
He was kind of a funny guy sometimes, but then was out of his league in the SZ. He should have stuck to humor.

You're right -- I didn't get up on a high horse because it wasn't my decision to make. I thought it was a shitty thing to do, but well within the right of the board of directors of the legal entity that owns POA. I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall on those offline conversations that led to the ultimate closure of the SZ, though.
But I have to disagree that he contributes very little. A lot of his content is fluff, but I enjoy his fluff and humor, and there is real content in his submission history. I like to laugh and enjoy some penis humor now and then.
Daddy's airplane or not, he's a pilot (and actively looking to purchase his own). Many members of this forum, the red/blue/purple boards, facebook, etc., can't afford their own airplanes. I think using that against somebody is counterproductive and wholly hurtful to GA. How many other members only have anything to add as a result of a friend's plane, a rental plane, or some other arrangement favorable to them? Hell, I'd love to have cheap access to a plane. Sure, mine's cheap, but cheaper is always better!

So it's obvious we have some agreement. And I would have been even more inclined to agree with you before he began gloating over the demise of the SZ. I still don't understand why someone that disagrees with the SZ would continue to dive in and then complain about it. I too used to, and still do occasionally enjoy his humor. I just think there is too much of it, and it is laced with too many penis references. Perhaps if he had more boob references he could hold my attention longer. :)

I just think he, and some others did not agree with the conservative thought viewed in SZ although I thought both sides were well represented, progressive, and conservative/libertarian. They just didn't like hearing stuff they didn't agree with, and couldn't stop reading SZ for lack of self control. Yes, prefer boobs to penises also! ;D

From my experiences, the pilot community as a whole is largely conservative. From what I saw in SZ, it was largely dominated by opinions typical of the right side of the aisle. That's not to say that other views weren't expressed -- but it was still largely conservative regardless. The problem is that most non-conservatives view conservatives as assholes ;)

I still cruise and post on POA but not like before when the SZ was up and running.
The number of silly and inane threads has gone up.
There's definitely a feeling that something's missing. It's hard to put into words, but something is missing on POA now. Maybe it was the heated arguments that would spill into the SZ and then become a real debate that was educational and not just all rainbow's and unicorns.

Is there anyone left on POA that qualifies as an expert on anything any more? Or have they all been run off?

No, you can talk about them, but you have to have the "correct" opinions about them, because there is a move afoot on POA to ban anyone with incorrect opinions.

None of you would have the balls to say this stuff to these people in person. Get over yourselves and your inflated egos. All of you need to get over your pencil dick complexes and stand on your own intellect instead of putting down other people to make yourselves feel important.
Small minds need to tear down others to make themselves seem important.

What seems to be the typical response over here:
"Oh yeah? You just can't take a humorous and clever response! <insert homophobic slander>"
Then:
"<high five each other> Yeah! You told him!"
Ya'll give yourself so much credit for being the open minded ones who are all about open discussion and all sides of an argument? Then when anybody points out faults in your persona you start slinging homophobic trash.
Again I say that none of you would sling this trash in person. Hide behind your keyboards.

So you invite yourself into someone else's home, start demanding they are to like you, appreciate your childish sense of humor, and then demand they should adhere to your so called ethics?
What's wrong Bryan? The other board hasn't officially admitted you to the "MC Club", so you want to attempt to moderate this forum?
It's becoming very clear where the problems over at the other board started coming from.

I think you have a far superior view of what constitutes clever and/or humorous, but that's what makes a world.
Relax, take off your high hat, stop attacking people just because you're bored, lonely, or gagging for more attention, and set awhile.
If we haven't skewered your favorite sacred cow, stick around, we promise to get to it.
-
That's generally true of anybody that makes their first dive in to debate. It takes some time until folks realize what they don't understand well enough. I know plenty of people that couldn't hold a conversation on world events for quite some time initially, but eventually could. It wouldn't be fair to discount somebody for not having sufficient time to figure out how to have something to add.
THIS is why I mostly didn't participate in SZ but liked to look in for the opinions and discourse. I don't have the time to properly research the subjects and KNOW I'll have my ass handed to me on a platter. Anyone who had looked into the SZ for more than a minute should realize one needs to be prepared.

Great observation.
I have found that the folks who seem to get easily butthurt on web forums are typically but not always, woefully unprepared not just to present and defend their own viewpoint, but more importantly simply don't seem to be prepared to actually be disagreed with. And again in my experience, they seem to be disproportionately from a left of center viewpoint and come largely from the participation trophy Dr. Spock generation.
It's an almost pathological refusal IMO, for some, to separate criticism of an argument or position or lifestyle choice, from themselves as a person. Disagreement is read as a mean spirited attack, a personal affront, and the butthurt begins - then, if attempts to buttress their argument fail or are met with continued criticism it becomes 'personal'. I've felt that way before, but preparation and confidence in one's position/belief system goes a long way, as does realizing it is just 1's and 0's being transmitted over the interwebz at the end of the day, and really only means as much or as little as we decide it means.
Water off a duck's back or the worst experience of your life, only you can decide for yourself.

I think you sell yourself a bit short. I occasionally I had to admit I was just plain wrong in SZ, and usually people respected that. I know I will be wrong here too or maybe just not as smart nor articulate as others!

I posted a new thread announcing the new movie about the Obamas. A few minutes later the thread was pulled and my hand was slapped for creating a politically themed thread.
Actually, all I did was post a link to an article about the movie and said it hadn't been rated yet. I figured it would get a few yuks.
It's kinda fun to poke sticks at you guys every now and then and watch you snarl. ;)

Yep...TangoWhiskey, a mod, went and looked at my e-mail address (which on there is fname@lname.ca), then looked me up in the FAA database, and sent me a PM with my full name, and effectively threatening to "out" me.

At the original recording at London’s Olympic Studios, the chant of “woo-woo” started in the control room, kicked off by producer Jimmy Miller and a group including Anita Pallenburg, Marianne Faithful and a coterie of “elite film crowd” who’d turn up at the studio to sing along to whatever the Stones were recording that day. Producer Jimmy Miller put a mike in the control room to record them, but their takes were scrapped and re-recorded by Jagger, Richards and Miller in LA.

If this was the POA, the moderators would send him a PM threatening to post his personal details publicly. They did that to me when I was calling out their hypocrisy.
Seriously?
After all the banning crap for people who did or were accused of that they threatened to do same?
Wow.
'Gimp
Yep...TangoWhiskey, a mod, went and looked at my e-mail address (which on there is fname@lname.ca), then looked me up in the FAA database, and sent me a PM with my full name, and effectively threatening to "out" me.
I responded with a "Go ahead" and provided him with SSN, DOB and place of birth with a statement of "if you're going to dox me, do it right". Obviously my calling them hypocrites got under their skin.
That's crazy and probably violates some federal law. Libs love laws it seems and I would have seen that as a threat.

The POA has become a pathetic reflection of the mental condition of the current moderators. They are a joke.

I agree. I've checked a few threads that were halfway interesting, but I had no interest in participating in the discussion.

Me too.
I have even posted a few times lately, but I don't really have the interest to follow up.
We have way more interesting people here. Including our libs and Jaybird.

Welcome. But maybe with more substantive posts than this, it will be less boring for you.

Now they have people bitching they can't hit report post fast enough on POA.
This forum requires that you wait 60 seconds between reporting posts. Sheesh.

That was when SNL was actually worth watching.
I also find it unwatchable now.
But...
Karen and I recently sought out and found and watched the very first SNL episode. While it had its moments, much of it was pretty lame.
I think many of us tend to remember the "Best of..." moments - and many were quite hilarious.
But there was always a lot of mediocre, or just plain bad, drek as well.

A human trait, which allows women to have more than one child, and people in general to make bad choices when voting for elected officials.

That has always been my opinion. You had to sit through the boring hoping to catch one of the jewels.
But the few I have seen over the past few years have been void of jewels.

I thought it was beer that allowed some women to have any children at all.

Still remember this one from classic SNL: Quarry
Jingle: "This world's a-changing faster than a teardrop turns to laughter
But some things never change, and they're the things that really matter.
Like weather vanes and country lanes, where crickets chirp at night
And breakfast in the early morning starts your day off right."
[ cut to interior farmhouse kitchen table, breakfast time ]
Farmwife: Out here on the farm, breakfast is our most important meal. That's why we start each day the natural way. With a big brimming bowl.. of Quarry. [ shows product ]
[ family members pour the rocks from the box into their bowls ]
Farmwife: Quarry contains no preservatives, no additives, no artificial flavoring. And it's made without the use of pesticides or inorganic fertilizer. Because Quarry isn't grown; it's mined. It's the only cereal that's pure 100% rocks and pebbles, for a hearty old-fashioned flavor the whole family will enjoy.
[ flash cuts of family "chewing" on the rocks in their bowls ]
Son: Great, Mom!
Farmer: This is really good.
Daughter: Delicious!
Farmwife: And it's good for them. Because every serving is chockful of minerals.
Daughter: I like Quarry 'cause it's crunchy.
Farmwife: What?
Daughter: [ louder ] I said, I like Quarry 'cause it's crunchy!
Farmwife: So, if breakfast is important to you, try Quarry.
Jingle: "Like swimmin' holes and brimmin' bowls
of cereal made from stone.
Announcer: Quarry. Better tasting 'cause it's mined.
==========================================
Or from the Phil Hartman era: Colon Blow
Announcer: Hold it! Is that what you’re having for breakfast?
Man: Sure, haven't you heard? Fiber is really good for you.
Announcer: Well, there's fiber, and then there's high fiber. Try this.
[ offstage hands replace cereal box with Colon Blow cereal box ]
Man: Hmm.. Colon Blow. Sounds delicious. But is it really higher in fiber than my oat bran cereal?
Announcer: Take a guess: How many bowls of your oat bran cereal would it take to equal the fiber content of one bowl of Colon Blow?
Man: Two?
Announcer: Guess again.
Man: Three?
Announcer: A little higher.
Man: Four?
Announcer: Keep trying.
Man: Five?
Announcer: No, you'll have to do better than that.
Man: Seven?
Announcer: Guess again.
Man: Eight?
Announcer: We'll give you one more guess.
Man: Nine.
Announcer: Not even close. [ table starts shaking ] It would take over 30,000 bowls. [ a giant pyramid of cereal bowls shoots up from under the man, who yells in terror as it rises ] To eat that much oat bran, you'd have to eat ten bowls a day, every day for eight and a half years.
Man: [ after the pyramid settles; shouts from afar ] Wow! I think I get the picture! Colon Blow must be the highest fiber cereal the market!
Announcer: Not any more, now that there's new Super Colon Blow.
Man: Super Colon Blow?
[ pyramid rises even higher with the man screaming ]
Announcer: It would take over two and a half million bowls of your oat bran cereal to equal the fiber content of one bowl of Super Colon Blow.
[ pyramid settles ]
Man: [ overwhelmed ]I'm convinced! [ looks down the pyramid in panic ]
[ cut to close-up of bowl with Colon Blow and Super Colon Blow boxes ]
Jingle: "Colon Blow and you-u-u-u in the morning"
Announcer: Colon Blow and new Super Colon Blow.
Voiceover: Warning: may cause abdominal distention. Consult a physician.
[ fade to black ]

It was one of the few I bothered to click on.
Now...
"Thread locked pending MC review"
Just sayin'.
I had him on ignore anyway, after some comments bordering on psychopathic.

Apparently he had his legion of followers there. Nothing new, Bozo the Clown has loyal followers as well.

He kind of ran out of code phrases for "Jews" in his rantings.

The Henning thread has been closed by the moderators.
One less interesting thread to go there for.
-
It's odd that people will bitch about a thread. If you don't like it, don't read it. Oddly, the same people will talk about how they have no need for the ignore feature because if they don't like someone they have the willpower to not read that person's post.
-
I got a kick out of the Henning thread because it popped up shortly before the new year.
The mods were aggressively closing any threads about the SZ, where there was actually no rule against them, but left the Henning thread in contravention of an explicit rule about talking about bans. I was in a mood to point out such hypocrisy, and many folks there dislike having their hypocrisy pointed out.
I'm not a Henning fan-boi by any means, but I find it distasteful to talk about people who have been banned, as they are prohibited from defending themselves.
-

Funny how that works! This whole thread is proof.

Yes indeed. POA definitely had a much more front porch feel in the early days, and it was fun to go to the flyins and meet people face to face.

Really sorry you feel that way! POA is still a good place to hang out, although without Spin Zone, I feel it is missing that extra bit of pizzaz. You are right about the part of meeting other pilots, made quite a few new friends from POA. Heck, pretty sure you and I first met from a connection on the old AOPA yellow board.

Yes, we did meet at AOPA, and a lot of folks came to POA when that board went down. Actually, I can't think of a person I don't like from AOPA or POA. That was a while ago Gary!

For friendly folks I spend time on the Purple Board. I've met, probably 20, of those folks. Some are members of both boards. I've had the opportunity on a couple of occasions to have dinner with Kim here in the Atlanta area and she is first class people. Last April we had about 15 PB folks at a weekend get together in Edenton, NC. It was truly wonderful.

An absolutely great lady and a very hard worker. She's been to the ATL area a couple of times and we always go meet with her for dinner. The last time was a couple of years ago when she drove from KC to Dallas to pick up these calendars they had done on Fifi and drove to Atlanta to have "Dutch" Van Kirk autograph a few so the could be auctioned off. Her husband, Phil, is a part of Fifi's traveling crew.
