Pilot Zone / Re: New Pilot Forum

I don't really think that's it. I just think that folks should refrain from replying with the sort of personal insults that I just posted.

I should have put in a smiley, it was meant in utter jest.  Sorry if you were offended.

Because I think most of you are sufficiently intelligent to realize that if you really wanted political discourse with your fellow pilots you would have to be a bit polite about it.  Since that's never happened here, it means that either 1) you are unable to do so or 2) you are unwilling to do so.

Either is fine by me, honest.  But if you really want a vibrant board with lots of participants (which I'm assuming you all do) you might need to rethink things a bit.  To be honest, I really don't think you should.  I really don't think anyone here honestly wants to read about anything that might conflict with their opinions or world view, and that the nice echo chamber you have going is exactly what you all have been seeking in the first place.
You really believe that you have superior intellect to the rest of us, which is sad and kind of pathetic.

It is inconceivable to you (and your fellow academics) that most conservatives actually do have a thirst for knowledge, we do our own research, and we do draw our own, independent conclusions.

Having a PhD in Genetics or whatever you have certainly makes you more knowledgeable than your average person in that topic. But it does not give you expert-level knowledge in ALL topics, which is where you show your soft underbelly.

When we challenge you on topics that we may well have greater knowledge or broader experience than you, you seem incapable of accepting that reality, and thus you immediately go full snowflake.  You attack 7 with childlike jokes. You claim every disagreement is an attack on you. And ultimately you pout and leave the forum, as if that should even matter to us.

This would be a better forum if you stayed in a debate, engaged in debate without carrying your obvious perception that we are all intellectually inferior to yourself, and most importantly, actually back up your arguments. Seriously, most of your posts sound more like a Miss Peggy Drive-by than an attempt to engage those with which you disagree.

I wonder when it is ok to tell someone that they are wrong.

What about when someone is completely wrong?

Or when someone is wrong and should know better?
Shut up. You’re wrong. RACIST!!!!

Spin Zone / Re: Doesn’t impeachment ensure re-election?
« on: October 04, 2019, 10:09:51 AM »
I disagree to some extent. If they actually draw up articles of impeachment, based on what we know now, it will be an unbelievably stupid move. So far though, it's just an inquiry.
But it’s an inquiry which is one-sided and improper. The democrats think they get to use the term “impeachment” indefinitely, and subpoena witnesses without any defense from the Republicans. They believe they can troll for evidence without restriction, giving witnesses only 2 days notice, and demanding they can’t have their own lawyers present. The GOP is finally pushing back on this.

An “impeachment inquiry” requires a vote in the House of Representatives. Trump called their bluff and demanded they take a vote before they would cooperate further. It is a brilliant strategy, because once a vote is taken, the Republicans can begin to subpoena their own witnesses.  That’s clearly not what Schiff and Pelosi want.

I don't think the FAA will.  But I do see it becoming an insurance issue.
They certainly could. Operators of certain vintage aircraft operate under Letters of Authorization with the FAA. They can yank authorization quite quickly.

One only has to read the B-17 thread on here to get a grasp of what’s wrong with this board.  There was a good conversation going on about the merits of keeping warbirds flying but then someone had to pipe in with some political vitriolic nonsense about democrats wanting to shutdown warbirds because they are patriotic displays.  Of course, the thread is in Spin Zone so I guess such nonsense is to be expected.  So it isn’t as simple as ignoring certain threads if one wants to ignore the idiocy.  Some people can and will make any conversation or topic to be about themselves and their twisted beliefs no matter how big of a stretch it may be.  It really is rather pathetic and the main reason this board has failed to grow and has become little more than an echo chamber.  Just my two cents.
I’m the one who first noted that CT Senator Blumenthal said something about regulating Warbird flights on the SAME DAY OF THIS TRAGIC ACCIDENT.  Sorry if you don’t like that I mentioned it, but it is a perfectly legitimate complaint.  The bodies weren’t even cold and a politician felt the need to pipe up and say something needs to be further regulated.

As evidenced by Blunenthal, politics is interwoven into real life far, far too much. I have a good deal of real world Warbird experience. That was the thrust of my posts on that thread. But I also push back when people feel the need to not let a tragedy go to waste for their own political ends.

If you like zero politics involved in aviation matters, aOPA’s forums are the perfect place to be. I’m not quite sure I get why you aren’t happy that we aren’t emulating the Red Board.

Maybe Stan has access to the stats as he is in the Confederate, errrr, I mean the Commemorative Air Force.  Warbird flights are very, very safe.  I can't even remember the last time one crashed with passengers.  No Reno is not indicative as that is air RACING.
I don’t have any stats, but when I attend the Wing Staff Conference in Dallas (designed for officers of the various units to meet and discuss important matters) an annual segment is the incidents or accidents in the past year, what we can learn from them, and of course what does our insurance company say about things. Some years are much better than others. None have involved fatalities in the CAF for a very long time. However, 2017’s C-47 “Bluebonnet Bell” crash in Texas enroute to OSH resulted in a brief safety stand down for the entire CAF fleet. There were no fatalities but there were some serious burn injuries. There were no paid passengers, and all were CAF volunteers.  One guy spoke who was in the back with I think 10-11 people.  All had Nomex flight suits, nicely stowed away in the baggage compartment. When this guy exited the aircraft in the aft section, as soon as he jumped out, the spilled fuel ignited. 3rd degree burns from his sock line to the bottom of his shorts.  Nomex is required for required crew members (in a C-47 I presume pilot and copilot, not sure if they have a flight engineer), but not for pax. The only one wearing Nomex was the co-pilot.  Also, no one used the emergency exists, which would have kept them away from the fire. Lots of changes in procedures came about because of that.

The feeling was that the next serious accident could result in Major FAA intervention.

But in general, yes, Warbird flights are very safe, in large part because of the relationship the CAF has with the FAA, which checks our maintenance procedures and other things on a regular basis.

There are enough examples in museums. If the owner wants to fly one and it is airworthy, then they should fly it.
Walk through the Air and Space Museum. Or the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles. What do you hear?  Nothing. What do you smell?  Nothing. What do you see?  Basically 3-D artifacts.

Take a ride in a Warbird.  Smell the oil. Smell the fumes. Smell the history. Hear the sound of a Ranger engine, or the roar of a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 in a T-6, or the R-2800 Double Wasp engine powering a Thunderbolt.

Watch a 90-year old veteran become a 22 year-old warrior again when he steps inside a B-17 once again.

That’s why we have to keep these aircraft flying.

I fly a Warbird for the Commemorative Air Force.  I’m also the Wing Leader for the Wisconsin Wing of the CAF.

The Collings Foundation has a similar mission to the Commemorative Air Force, so when one Warbird goes down and especially if there is a loss of life, we all feel the pain.

The CAF’s mission is to Educate, Inspire, and Honor, by exposing current and future generations to the feel, sights and sounds of historical military aircraft, and educate the public about the men and women who flew them. (This is all paraphrased; you’ll find the exact mission at CommemorativeAirForce.org.)

The CAF is the largest flying history museum
In the world, with 170 WWII and later aircraft, with over 155 in flying condition. The Collings Foundation has about 30 flying aircraft.

I’m very certain that the level of training and maintenance is top notch in the CF as it is in the CAF. The thought of hurting a pax, or bending a piece of history, is worse than the idea of just losing my own life.  It is very sobering to take a passenger up in a piece of history.

Most Warbirds operators fly these aircraft under a letter of authorization (LOA) with the FAA. I don’t know about the CF but I think that is how they operate.

My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this accident.

And CT Senator Blumenthal’s call for more “scrutiny and oversight of these planes are going to continue to fly.”?  The opportunistic little prick can kiss my ass.

Aircraft are meant to fly

If it's airworthy, let it fly.

Unfortunately, it takes hundreds of millions votes to get elected.
Really?  So with about 129 million votes cast in 2016, which candidate got more than 100 million?

5621
When you're starting from the position of people thinking "maybe this guy isn't so bad", it's very difficult to argue that you're presenting the best candidate.  But the trouble now is that many of those people KNOW what the president is like and they don't like it.  The calculation has changed from two unknowns and trying to figure out which one is worse to knowing Trump and trying to figure out if Warren would be worse.  Probably, but this is a really crappy way to determine a president.

Again - there are people that would be better, people who would wipe the floor with Warren.  Trump comes into this election with more baggage then he had last time.  He's nowhere near the best candidate.
I think you are TOTALLY misreading the situation.

Yes, most people started out as “maybe this guy isn’t so bad.”  However, with almost 3 years under our belt, I believe most people know what the president is like and LOVE IT.  This is not just me talking in an echo chamber. This is people who aren’t on a regular diet of CNNMSNBCABCCBS, but are just trying to live their lives without being obsessed by politics.

These people love how this country has turned around, love how unemployment is down to record levels, and yes, love the feistiness of Trump.

When these same people see him relentlessly bullied and badgered, for no good reason, they are standing by Trump’s side.

What is this “more baggage?”  The Russia thing was a big fat zero. This Ukraine thing will be same thing. I would say Trump May be the LEAST corrupt person to sit in the Oval Office in 50 years.

You only get your opinion of baggage if you have a regular diet of the MSM. The rest of America who are like those who attend Trump’s rallies could not care less, and are ready to take out their wrath on these ankle biters.

5622
Trump connects with the people, look at the number of people that go to his rallies, including those that never get into the venue. He is more like them than any politician on either side of the aisle. He was not raised to be a politician. He is, straight up, a business man. He tells it like it is whether you like it or not and does not back down and people in his administration are learning to not back down.  Look at the testimony of the that Ex DNI guy the other day who told the committee chair, " I don't work for you, you work for me because I'm a tax payer". More people need to grow a set.

Absolutely. I'm not going to not vote for them. I'm just not going to belong to the party anymore, or send them any money, or defend them as the "good guys". They are no longer the good guys; they are now the lesser of two evils. There are some exceptions, but most of them are not proving to stand behind what they claim are their principles.
Just look at the lack of outward support for Trump. They fail to see that their political future depends on very large part on Trump being re-elected. If he fails in 2020, it will be a bloodbath in both chambers of Congress.

The senate must confirm anyone selected to replace the VP if Pence were to resign.  No way they could get any Trump nomination without going the nuclear route.
I hear zero talk about the Republicans retaining the Senate next year, yet I believe the GOP has more seats to defend than the democrats in 2020.

Either there is total confidence the GOP will retain control, or complete ignorance as to the fact that they could easily lose it.

If the GOP loses the senate, the country is done. No, that’s not hyperbole.  Trump will be convicted, 60 million Trump voters will be completely disenfranchised, and those 60 million hold most of the firearms.

I’m done with Republicans.
I’m done with Republicans too.  But when it comes to a binary choice on Election Day, if we conservatives sit out, we effectively give the keys of the kingdom to far left radicals.

Republicans know that, and take advantage of that.  I hate it, but I won’t sit out just on principle.
